I have lived in Richmond all of my life and have always viewed Richmond as being a very culturally diverse city where everyone is welcome and where anyone can thrive. However, I have noticed that people who are not from Richmond have views that are very different than mine. Most people I have talked to say that Richmond is not a progressive city, not culturally diverse, and is a city that is stuck in the past. Anyone who is from Richmond knows that this is untrue but people who are not from here are deterred from moving here. I am a student from the Richmond area and I feel that wherever I go, that negative view of my hometown will change what people think of me. They will assume that anyone from Richmond is a product of a city that will not change their old ways of glorifying people (some of whom are not even Virginians) who fought to keep slavery and the cruel treatment of African Americans in tact. I think that it is one thing to teach people about history regardless of how good or bad it is but what Richmond is doing is celebrating the negative parts of its history. It also makes supremacist groups feel right at home when they are in Richmond and that hurts me. I want people to see Richmond as a city that is inclusive, welcoming, and progressive. Not as the capital of the confederacy. The only way to change this view is to move forward. We should teach history, not celebrate its bad parts. In, conclusion, I think that Richmond should tear down every confederate monument except for Robert E. Lees monument as soon as possible. If this is not possible, then I think that adding a statue of L. Douglas Wilder would be nice. Context that puts emphasis on the importance of progression, education, and diversity should be added in whatever way possible. However, I do not think that most of those statues stand for that.

I love the statue. It sort of sits as the gateway into the city . Its impressive to see it as you come South down Boulevard. Its a great work of art and sits at the intersection of Monument and Boulevard .
