We just returned from Thursday, March 30th 7:30 performance of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. We viewed the first act and left. We could not bear to see Tennessee Williams masterpiece interpreted in such a way as an out and out insult. The directing was sloppy, upstaging of Blanche, I guess to take focus away from her immense size? Miscasting of Mitch (segregation was the law in 1947) and Stanley. Stanley was playing for the dumb instead of the intelligent tiger that he is supposed to be. The pregnant bump on Stella, too much too soon, so the lines just did not make sense. I thought we would be entertained but we were horribly disappointed. There was a glaring absence of sexual tension that was given in unmotivated kisses that did not make any sense. The climax of Stellas famous descent down the spiral stairs was a joke, we almost laughed. There was no violence present. Blanche was the most miscast. Her size is not belieavable as this character. The lines reveal that Stella is "as plumb as a little partridge!" , not Blanche! And Blanches lines, "You havent said a word about my appearance...I want you to take a look at my figure! I havent put on one ounce in ten years. I weigh now what I weighed the summer you left Belle Reve." Williams stated emphatically about Blanche: "There is something about her uncertain manner that suggest a moth." This actor playing Blanche did no such thing. All we have is disappointment with this production. At least we had the sense to leave during the first intermission and not be tortured by viewing the next two acts. We love this play too much for this insulting interpretation. This director, cast, and crew really created a horrific production. We put most the blame on the director leading these dedicated theatre professionals down a sorry path of mediocrity. We are sorry that so much effort was put into a play that was miscast and misinterpreted in such egregious ways. We are now going to TRY and recover by viewing the Vivien Leigh and Jessica Lange versions of this beautiful play on film. Hopefully watching those two productions, we can forget this Grand Theatre production of STREETCAR as quickly as possible. There was nothing grand about our experience. We almost wept on the drive home to have a Tennessee Wlliams play destroyed in such a way, this is unforgivable and it is as Blanche says, "some things are not forgivable. Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable." We also feel robbed.

This is an interesting, classic theater. The seats are really cramped and uncomfortable, but its still an awesome theater. Ive seen Sundance films here, and its a great venue for that. Just avoid it if youre really tall or weigh a lot.

Impressive large theater in Salt Lake Community College. Definitely an under-appreciated venue for great lectures and Sundance films near Sugarhouse neighborhood.

For an older venue it is beautiful. With all the charm of an older venue you get the bad like tight seats, steep steps and smaller bathrooms.
