Although it is a municipal course, I think it is respectfully maintained. The driving range is extremely fluid, though there are often many stand by the wayside type folks hanging around. Mid day would be the best time of day to visit this course. I will definitely return to this location as Im new to the area. Was this review …? Useful Funny Cool Michael C. Michael C. KEW GARDEN HL, NY 13 friends 24 reviews Share review Compliment Send message Follow Michael C. 3.0 star rating 2/25/2012 Hmmmm where should I start? For starters, this place can get extremely crowded at the obvious times so dont plan on walking on unless you go solo or only want to play 7 holes before sun down. Just make your tee time online and plan accordingly. The best days to play are early in the week and at early times. Same goes for the range; expect a wait during rush hour. There are a lot of high school kids that crowd up the place in the afternoon. Practice facilities: The range is nice and spacious. Only downside is you have to hit off mats and rubber tees. They have plenty of targets out there to work on distances. If you hit the long ball they might tell you to put the driver away. I have hit it over the net a few times and was told to stop. I cant help it! Putting greens are nice and chipping area works for me. They have a trap to practice out of. Course: I love the layout! This is what keeps me coming back. They can make it really tough and also really easy. Expect to wait on all the par 3s. Staff: I have met some very friendly staff and also some real a-holes. I go to this course once a week and they treat me as if Ive never played. The starter also accused me of stealing!! Yes can you believe it. Right before I teed off on #1. Thats a big no no. I have everything a golfer could want. Why would I steal. He also accused me of breaking the 90 rule on every hole once when I was -2 thru 9. I know better and why was he following me on every hole??? Maintenance crew does a great job. Becks Prime: hot dog is killer and so are the sandwiches. Great place to chill and get normal food at a public course. Can be a bit over priced but to each is own. Only reason I give it a three is because some of the staff can be rude and accusing me of stealing is an awful thing to do. He did come up a few holes later to tell me he had the wrong guy. It was a "different" black guy!

Ill start with the good. The location is great, right inside the loop couldnt ask for a better place. Really nice greens for a public course. Decent practice facility. Now the bad. Rarely do they let you hit off grass, as in never. As any person the cares about golf should know hitting off a mat SUCKS! and is no way close to hitting off grass. They should really care a little more and make the effort. The putting green only has holes on half the green. Why? There is no logic to this, they are not saving the integrity of the greens by doing this, another amateur mistake. They have one marshal that is just not a nice person. Has no clue how to handle himself and no idea about what being a marshal entails. He is unprofessional and in turn makes the whole place look bad. They have a Becks Prime at the course, I dont mind backs prime but it has no place at a golf course. I want good sandwiches and so do most golfers. They dont do any club repairs, how lame is that! I could add a few more things but I think you get the point. If you want to play golf inside the loop on a course that has pretty nice greens this is the place, just dont expect anything else.

Golf course is the best value in the city. The overall challenge of the course is great, lots of long par fours that make you hit good shots. The greens are always in good shape for the amount of play this course sees each year. This is the only public golf course I know of in Houston that actually punishes you if you hit it in the rough. Most public golf courses have their rough thinned out for amateurs, but Memorial allows theirs to grow out a bit, creating a fair challenge for every skill level. Memorial Park Golf Course also keeps a great pace of play, if you play other municipal courses in the area you are always looking at a four and half hour round, I have never played this course over four and a half. Play the course around the time of the City Amateur and you are up for a real good challenge. Dont be intimidated by the tee time lottery system, it is easy to use, and often gets you a time close to your request.

Overall, this is one of the best courses in Houston when you consider location, course condition, course layout and price. You would never know you are in the middle of Houston as the course is set in the middle of beautiful Memorial Park. The course plays differently each time out (e.g. they let the rough grow out for tournaments, move tee boxes and pin locations frequently, etc). The Becks Prime restaurant on site is a nice bonus. Lastly, one rater is correct, if you are going to play really slow, drive on or near the greens or drive in clearly designated prohibited areas, you may get anything from a gentle reminder to a stern tongue lashing (and I have gotten both), but if you are able to let go of the latter, I would definitely want the marshalls keep play moving and enforce things to keep up the course conditions.

While not an extremely hard course to play, for a municipal course, you will be hard pressed to find a course that offers as much as Memorial Park offers. The course offers a great blend of very long and short Par 3s, 4s, and 5s, which means there are great opportunities for eagles and birdies on some holes. While the fairways are open and the greens are generous, there are places on the course that can severely penalize bad shots. The driving range is great and is always busy. The putting and chipping areas need some attention. Lastly, you wont find many courses with a Becks Prime (restaurant) onsite, which makes the pre and post-round experience more enjoyable.

The fairways are not in very good shape and most of the time I was hitting off of dead patches of grass. Spend your money elsewhere.. Green fees of $49 are way overpriced for the quality of the course. To top it off, the old man golf marshall and I exchanged words when he told my group to, "put it in another gear" when we were stuck behind a group of slow golfers. I guess jerks like him can get away with it when the city of Houston signs your paycheck. Take your money elsewhere bc overall the course is not in good shape.

The course is phenomenal, great practice facilities and beck prime is a bonus. My big issue is the archaic system for tee times, no way to call ahead and easily book a tee time. You have to get on a paper list when you arrive and pray they get you in. Ive walked away because its taken 1+ hours for a single a few times. Good luck showing up with 2 or more people. If they can fix this and just get into a normal booking process like EVERY other golf course it would be the perfect muni.
