This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Winspear Opera House once more, to experience the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet for the first time. While, the Winspear is easily accessible by car, train or on foot, parking is another story. What should be a two-minute credit card transaction, seemed to take hours. At one point, during our long wait in line, I joked with my sister that I should go to the front of the line and make everyone’s payment for them … wishful thinking. We finally start to make towards the theater. It’s a beautiful evening … lots of chatter, filled wine glasses everywhere, people dressed up and … wait … did I just walk into an outhouse?!? No, no … I’m at the Winspear and that’s the stench waiting to smack you across the face as soon as you walk in. Seriously, can someone take care of that? This beautiful state-of-the-art opera house, which by the way does not have room to sit an orchestra, should not smell like that. Anyway, we walk across the theater (still holding our breath), we pick up our tickets and head on upstairs. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet opening acts is a ridiculously weird number that seemed to be portraying birds in the wild? Or was it just chickens? It was a contemporary piece for sure that had everyone snickering from time-to-time. However out of the ordinary, it was still enjoyable. The second act was equally peculiar, but amazing nonetheless. The girls were swinging from the men, pretending to be pendulums … more chicken movements here and there and strangeness everywhere. The final act, however, took my breath away. My sister and I are still trying to figure out if the dancers were supposed to be angels? Or just couples dancing on water? In any case, I felt myself swaying as they swayed … I wanted to be right down there sharing the stage with them. All-white costumes, the stage seemed to have the water-reflection effect going on. Lifts, pirouettes, more lifts, more turns … It was all very moving … And who was the unidentified pianist who looked to be about 12-years old? (I’m exaggerating, of course but you get the point) My dear Lord that kid can play! He was breathtaking and very deserving of his standing ovation … he was really the one who stole the show.

The AT&T PAC is always a fun time no matter which venue youre at. I just saw Hair, and had a blast! If you’re fortunate enough to be able to catch a show at the Winspear, you will be pleased to know that the acoustics are wonderful. You will be completely immersed in the music of the show. It is a uniquely designed building with a stunning retractable chandler. Plus, the chairs are comfortable and roomy allowing you to enjoy the show without feeling cramped. What’s also refreshing is every time I’ve been at the AT&T PAC, the staff and volunteers are always courteous and helpful making any visit a wonderful experience. And, its easily accessible whether taking the DART or driving yourself (with perks of parking on the first floor if you happen to drive a Lexus). An awesome thing that I just discovered is the AT&T PAC is now offering student RUSH tickets which is great if you love theater but can’t afford it on a college budget (even though the shows are always worth the money). The only disadvantage is you can only buy 1 ticket and not 2 like at RUSH in NY. And sadly it’s still up to the shows discretion to offer student tickets. A fun tip and one of my favorite things to do that sadly (or fortunately) most patrons do not know about is, the stage door is conveniently accessible by a short walk to the side of the WInspear. It allows fans a great opportunity to briefly mingle and talk with some of the performers, get an autograph, and maybe even a picture with some of the performers. It brings the special added fun stage door experience of going to a Broadway show. I highly recommend checking out a show at the AT&T PAC for a fun night with your friends (or by yourself). Plus who doesn’t want a night of great entertainment and a chance to dress fancy? (or funky if you’re like me and try and dress up in the show’s theme).

What Hair lacked in plot they made up with an unreserved style of acting, amazing vocals, and an explosive set. As far as plot goes it can be summed up in rather brief terms. A hippie has a half pathetic relationship and feels pressured by his parents to become normal. Claude recieves his draft card and then takes drugs to feel better but gets a glimpse of what he wants to be. He is then drafted, and presumeably dies. The End. The lighting design left nothing to the imagination as the multi-color sunrise/set changed tones according to the feeling of the scene. The drug trip scene definately shows the full potential of the effect of light design on the audience. Veiwers found themselves emotionally dragged along as Claude faces his deepest fears inside his drug enduced hallucination. Despite the constant breaking of the fourth wall the get out of your comfort zone feel definately transferred to most of the front row and aisle audience as actors frequently mess with hair, give audience members flowers, and crawl over seats/people. The vocal and musical talent among the cast members prooved to be the highlight of the night. I was constantly being impressed by the vocal range and versatality of the cast, and was pleasantly surprised to see cast playing the piano from time to time. Overall, the mood and message was clear, the acting was superb, the music flawless, the set, lighting, and sound fantastic, and the AT&T Performing Arts Center definatly added to the performance! The musical itself would get only 4 stars from me for lack of engaging plot, but the performance undoubtedly earns a full five stars! I expect no less from the best in Dallas!

This venue is unreal. I came to the Winspear Opera House a while back to see Rock of Ages and left with a whole new view on arts and performance in Dallas. After taking a stroll through the gorgeous tree lined plaza outside, we walked in the front entrance and were instantly transported to a different place in time. From the buzz inside the lobby of the theatre, the amazing attention to modern beauty throughout the complex and the kind people working inside, our night was off the great start. The Winspear is a magical place to see a show because of the attention to detail and design seen throughout the entire building. From the winding staircases to the illuminating and enchanting lighting element hanging far above the crowd. We found our seats in the dress circle and the lights went down. The show was mind blowing and we felt right at home with some of the familiar tunes. Heck! Some folks even sang along loudly to the songs, I couldnt help but feel that this is what the experience should really be about. From the 80s inspired crimped hair and jean jackets to the vocal purity and talent that exploded onstage in the singing and dancing that I saw. If given the chance, I would come here for every single show, because honestly there is no place quite like the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the world. Congrats Dallas, my eyes have been opened to a whole new world of arts & performance.
