Great little museum on Beale Street. It is surrounded by bars and I have walked past it half a dozen times not realizing it was there. I would recommend checking it out if you are into history (especially civil rights history). When I walked in I was greeted by Withers grandson Ernest who was a very nice young man (and well dressed!). I will not ruin the trip for you but just know Withers was in the right places at the right time and he had his camera. If you go you will see some very iconic photos taken during the civil rights movement a long with photos from a lot of the big name celebrates of the era. Cost is what you are willing to pay.

One of our first stops on our trip to Memphis, and we were so impressed! They have a gorgeous, expansive collection of iconic historical photography covering the civil rights movement, memphis music scene, and general history of the community. Every single staff member was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and invested in sharing this art and history with the museums visitors. Several of them chatted with us about interesting historical facts and how the collection has influenced them personally. 100% recommended to check out if you get the chance!

This place is an absolute must see! If youre on Beale St and want a true history experience from the perspective of an individual who was there; then this is the museum to see. Mr.Withers was the man responsible for capturing some of the most iconic images weve seen throughout history. This museum is only part of his vast repertoire of photos he took throughout his career. I highly recommend this museum. If you go, ask for "V" shes extremely knowledgeable and absolutely fantastic.

Absolutely loved this museum. We went on New Years Eve 2016, we took our time and saw souch history. After our tour we got to visit with his grandson Ernest he was very knowledgeable and we had a very good conversation with him. The whole experience was great from start to finish and the staff were so nice.

This is an extraordinary exhibit of a dark time in American history, but you will feel compelled to look at the photography of Ernest Withers at critical moments during the Civil Rights movement that changed America. This is a must visit whenever you are in Memphis,TN. The Withers Collection is top notch!!

Itd be cool for them to integrate an online portion in the museum that lets you interact with all the photos online. Itd be an easy way to collect folks information for special events or even making sales of photos. The collection is quite impressive and the museum allows a glimpse.
