Today, on Record Store Day, I noticed a friend on Facebook asking for others to look out for a couple different 7" vinyl records that were only being released on this day. When I closed down at 4, I told him that I would go duck my head into a couple music stores and see if I can find anything for him. I went to 4 different record stores in the Greenville area, and found 1 of the 7" records he was looking for. 3 of these stores were very accommodating, and had great customer service. They were all full of people shopping, and also full of very awesome staff that were definitely there to help. As someone who doesnt collect vinyl, I had never really even been to a record store in over 10 years, but even I found a 7" record that I picked up for myself. So overall, I had a great experience with RSD and other record stores. Then, I got to BJ Music. I remember going to BJ Music in Spartanburg as a kid to buy CDs and shirts of bands that no other store would carry. So I am already nostalgic as I walk into the completely empty store. This should have been a red flag, but hey, I try to be a good friend when I can. So I ask the only person there, Randy (the owner), about RSD 7" records and where he would have them. His response was that they are all sold out and that he saves those kinds of things for customers. (Customers? Am I not a customer?) Then, he said that he allows regulars to prebuy the records they want from RSD in February to "prevent ebayers from getting it all". OK awesome. So I guess BJ Music isnt interested in new customers, or even ones that grew up buying from them. They are only interested in getting regular customers all of the limited edition stuff. I definitely understand that, but the snotty way that I was told that he keeps those things for "customers" just really left a sour taste in my mouth. Especially as someone where seriously started a vinyl collection 30 minutes before, and had great experiences at other stores within a couple miles. Having this mentality of only serving your known customers is a great way to watch your business die as your regulars die off as well. Hell, why even have a store? Just cater to a certain list of people and they can come to your house to buy limited edition vinyl records without you having to put up a facade of being a full service music store. Also, the irony of someone who professionally buys records and music at a discounted rate from other people, and then flips them for profit in his own store, getting irritated at the thought of someone doing it to him on eBay is not lost on me. There may have been a 15 year gap from when I used to frequent your stores until now, but you definitely lost out on any future business from me.

Its like taking a step back in time - only place Id buy my music (8 Track, Records, Tapes and CDs), get my taxes done(owner: Randy Coleman Jr. Is great at bookworm and taxes - certified) and schedule a DJ for that hip party that my clients (I own a catering business) throw.

The owner who works there all the time is very nice. The place itself is drab and a little depressing. The selection is ok but youd really only come here for CDs which I feel isnt worth the visit. If you are looking for records, Id probably skip this place.

I love the fact that if he doesnt carry what youre looking for, hell find it online, take your name and number, order it, and call you when its there so you can pick it up. And it beats going all the way to Haywood Mall.
