This is a great location to play or practice. There are two 18 hole courses; the Greenback is much easier and traditional style, and the Great Blue is difficult with a links feel to it. There are multiple practice areas: you can hit off the grass on the range (much better than off a mat) there is a sand trap and chipping area, and a practice putting green. The pro shop is limited and a bit run down, but it isnt about what is inside. The course has been fairly well taken care of, and it seeming to be more improved over a few years ago. If you are just starting or wanting to work on your game, play the Greenback. If you know what you are doing and want a challenge to see where you truly are with your game, the Great Blue will force accuracy and well thought out shots to get par.

Ive played from NY to AZ to CA + no course can compare for the price - great links style course in the Great Blue - very tough esp. when the rough is grown out ($40ish). Excellent U.S. style course in the Greenback ($35ish). Two very different designs by one great course designer, Robert Trent Jones. Always well maintained with nice grass tee driving range + excellent chip/putt area as well. Typically greens are fast but your mileage will vary. If youre over a 20, bring extra balls on the Great Blue - lots of water. Drawbacks Can get a bit soggy in the late fall + early spring Race track is next door so can be quite loud on the Great Blue when races are on..... Cheers, Don

I played the Greenback course yesterday after reading many of these reviews and its total disappointment. Many of the fairways were spotty and shaggy, or looked like theyd been through a flood recently. The greens were hard like concrete! I carry a 3 handicap and couldnt spin the ball on these greens, in many cases I found my ball mark near the flag and the ball ended up 45 feet away. Most of all...the value is a negative star. They charged $30 for 18 holes. I would have paid half that for the course conditions and felt satisfied. Ive played Wildwood, Cedars on Salmon Creek, and Tri-Mountain recently for less than that...all on Friday afternoon at the same time. Dont play here.

Lived here my whole life, always heard of this course and finally played it today. The grounds were in okay shape. It is a public city owned course but still a lot of clover and a fair amount of weedy areas on the course. The lakes were shimmy. The greens did roll true and were in good shape. Would not have been nearly as bad of an experience had the pace of play not been so bad. I get that done groups play slower than others and sometimes its a tough round but every hole/shot/tee was backed up. Tee times every 9 minutes is ridiculous... All in all not likely to play again soon

By far the best public courses in Portland. They played host to the US Amateur Public Links about 10 years ago, and the course is in great shape. The blue is definitely more challenging than the Green, but the Green holds its own. I wouldnt recommend either for beginners, though the practice facilities are amazing for all skill levels. You can bring a shag bag and chip and hit pitch shots for free, and buckets of balls are pretty reasonable. And green fees around 40 bucks on weekends? Ridiculous value.

If you like the corporate bean counter experience this place is for you. Its not geared toward golf but maximum dollars only. Employees at this golf course from the restaurant staff to the pro shop and management are simply.....rude and unkind when it comes to the golf customer. The golf courses themselves are great, no complaints but i cant support the unprofessional and uncaring staff and management at Heron Lakes. This is why i give them a poor review and wont be back anytime soon.

I am reviewing the Blue Side(Robert Trent Jones Jr). This is a treat for golfers who like RBT Jr courses. The clubhouse is much like that of most Portland courses...underwhelming with fair service. The golf course makes up for it however by providing a beautiful setting with overly challenging golf holes. If you expect to score, buy a yardage book or play a couple practice rounds. Greens are usually medium pace, and the condition is usually above average during the golf season.

We played the Great Blue, which was too difficult for us. Just too much trouble (bunkers and water) to get into on this course. But the worst problem was the non-stop roaring of the engines on the adjacent Portland International Raceway. It created a low-level tension that made it difficult to relax. The course is visually beautiful, though, and well-maintained. There were many herons, so it does live up to its name. I would not return here -- because of the noise.

Ive never played Heron lakes before untill yesterday. Heard a lot of good things about the course. Played Green backs and was slightly dissapointed. Its a beautiful course..but fairway and tee box conditions could need some work. Very soggy and mushy as if they just got hit with heavy rain the night before. Everyone at the clubhouse was nice, but just disappointed with the course conditions after hearing so much positive things about the course.

Heron Lakes has never looked better! Both courses , The Greenback and Great Blue are in phenomenal shape! Weve put many hours of work into improving these courses and now its all paying off! Come play either courses and have a great time! Grass driving range , teaching pros , outstanding food and bev department all backed by great management and superior maintenance staff!

Great Blue is in terrible shape. The superintendent has moved on and the course maintenance has been nonexistent. Bad greens - no grass, brown spots, bumpy, poor fairways lots of browns patches, etc. Not going to play this course again this year or even next year. Some of the greens are just bad. Disappointed that the management has let this course goto pot.

The great blue course is the best value in the city. High quality greens and very challenging layout rivals many of the expensive courses in town for half the cost. Also, have occassional specials that really are screaming deals. Easily the best public course in the area.

We played at the Great Blue and enjoyed it. Will try the other course the next time. Its a great municipal course. Would definitely consider playing it in the future. Weekends tends to be very busy, so I would consider playing there during the weekdays.

The course had a great design and good winter rates, but possibly the worst drainage Ive ever seen. The majority of the course was saturated or had standing water which made it hard to enjoy. Ill defiantly return in the summer to see its full potential.

I Love this course. The staff is super friendly and down to earth. The courses are fun and challenging. And the conditioning is excellent. Plus they have good beer on tap and a great practice area. What more could you want from a public course?
