I went to Athens Drive Highschool and grew up playing the surrounding courses. You will not find a nicer public course in the area. Yea, there are a handful of semi-private clubs with comparable prices (Crooked Creek, Lochmere, etc.) but none with as challenging of a layout as Lonnie Poole, or conditions as good. Eagle Ridge is the only club that even comes close. Lonnie Pooles greens surpass any semi-private or public course in the county. To play and putt on a course with as truearolling greens youd have to sneak on or play as a guest at Carolina CC. Raleigh CC, McGregor Downs, or Prestonwood. (recently airerated not to-date) All you haters out there bitching about slow play shouldnt play on Sat. or Sunday mornings with foursomes. Im willing to bet most of you bitching about slow play are not less than a 10 handicap. There is a recession going on afterall; It is a public course and the University is trying to keep it afloat and build a proshop when budget cuts are occuring left and right. I think theyve done a great job. If $ is an issue, I recommend going out at twilight hrs and trying to get in as many as you can. Ive teed off at 530 and later on several occasions and almost squeezed in 18 moving around on the course and playing through groups. From the NC State Competition Tees, this is a tour caliber course. Id love to see them host a tournament even if it means closing it down for a month or two, which Im sure is a long time coming since their budget is what it is. In closing, if you are a decent ball striker and can break 80 on most courses 7000 yds or shorter youll have difficulty breaking 85 at Lonnie Poole. Im a 3 handicap and my lowest score there is 76. The one time I played it all the way back from the NC State Comp tees I shot 80. Good luck! Please fix your divots and repair ball marks. oh yeah FYI - Lochmere, Crooked Creek, Wildwood, Etc. 5 and a half hours during peak season is pretty standard for those places, plus there will be more drunks and hacks at those places than at Lonnie Poole bc it is so challenging.

In regards to the condition and set up of the course, I think its one of the best around; however, the pace of play is absolutley rediculous here. Ive played this course ever since it opened and its always been super slow. I could understand the slow play when the course first opened, based on everyone wanting to play a new course in such great proximity to Raleigh. I kept thinking that the number of rounds would level off, but I was told the other day that play at the course is up. Im pretty sure the management is well aware of the pace of play issues, but it seems like they just dont really care. Secondly, Id say managment might be a little too proud of the course...$50 during the week and $75 during the weekend. Im really surprised this price point hasnt run off more folks.....but it appears it hasnt......Ill continue to use the range and putting green, as they are both great, but I just cant handle playing a round that last 6+ hours. If that ever changes, Id play there all the time, unitl then I save the frustration.

played on a saturday and the pace of play was ridiculously slow. it took over 5 hours for our 4some to play a round. we complained to the ranger and he had all kinds of excuses for it. he asked me if i wanted them to make the course easier... i explained that i dont care if people find the course difficult or not, he should speed up the pace of play. after our round i spoke to the guys in the clubhouse about it and he also stated it was because of the course being difficult. in my opinion this is not a good reason for slow play. if this is an issue, maybe they should make some adjustments to the course or not take as many tee times over the weekends. i am a NCSU alum, but i cant see myself spending 5+ hours on the golf course for 18 holes.

The course is amazing but hard as heck. If you are a beginner golf I would not suggest playing Lonnie Poole. It can play extremely long and there are tons of hazards. The bunkers are nearly impossible to get out of and the greens are challenging. It is obvious that NC State set this course up to be a collegiate course. I think the womens regionals are at this course in the near future. Unless you are a single digit handicapped you probably will not enjoy this course. I would suggest trying some of the other courses in Raleigh to tighten up your game before heading over to Lonnie Poole. The scenery is amazing as you can see downtown from the back 9 but it remains to be challenging through all 18 holes.

The course was in good condition and the bent grass greens excellent. The staff was friendly and accommodating; however, the pace of play was horrible. It took almost 3 hours to play the front nine and exactly 5 hours for the round. This was a week-day and during the morning hours. The disturbing aspect was the three Rangers /Starters did little to try to get two very slow foursomes ahead of us moving. At one point, there were 3 groups on the 10th hole and the first slow group had at least 3 open holes in front of them. A nice course but the snails pace of play will probably keep us from going back anytime soon. There are many other courses in the Raleigh area that are a better value.

If want want to play a great golf course and spend SIX HOURS doing it, then this is the place for you! Twice now in one month its the same story...tough course, busy day, etc. Real problems here. Ladies golf team play and junior outings walking a true riding course on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Rangers dont have the authority to improve pace of play. Greens stink. Nobody repairs ball marks on greens, rakes bunkers, and those same players will look for a lost ball forever. Do not play this course unless you have no other options or if you have a handicap greater than 15. You will regret it!

This is one of the best courses in Wake County. The pace of play was 4 1/2 hours so it looks like that slow play issues have been addressed. The greens roll nice and true and the fairways are very fast. The back 9 plays faster than the front. The third hole is just a bear, it is too long for a par 5, I had to lay up short of the hazard and play for a 5. The staff is friendly. The clubhouse facilities are temporary trailers, but they have a snack bar and pro shop. A place to change, but no lockers. I will be back this place is fun to play.

I stopped by to buy an NCSU golf shirt for my son who is a recent graduate. My husband and I were in the golf shop for about 10 minutes with 3 pros working in the shop and no other customers. One pro was swinging a club, the other two behind the counter. We were searching for a shirt that I had found previously and we had come back to purchase. None of the staff acknowledged that we were there, never said a word to us even as we walked out the door. Needless to say, he wont be getting a shirt from Lonnie Poole.
