Most horrible dining experience EVER! Cannot express how horrible the food and service were for a bill of over $200 per couple. Made reservations 2 weeks in advance. They did not tell us there would be a limited menu the night we dined. Arrived to find we had no choice of our appetizer, salad, or dessert. We had to choose between 4 entrees (fish, lamb, duck, or short ribs) for a set price of $75 per person. We politely asked for more choices and were denied, except for a similarly limited bar menu. The mandatory appetizer was a type of raw fish. Only two people at the table would eat it and said it was "Ok". The rest of us sent it back. The salad was Endive, charred, with a terrible dressing. Had one bite and pushed it back. One of us ordered lamb, which was pretty good, one ordered Halibut which was poor, and the rest of us ordered the only beef choice - short ribs. One expects short ribs to be fatty, but literally all we got was a hunk of fat the size of a deck of cards on a couple of tablespoons of watery mashed potatoes with inedible greens on top. After separating out the fat one of us found about 4 bites of meat, one found 2 bites, and one found no meat at all. The dessert "for two" was about 2 tablespoons of gelatinous something that tasted like kids play-dough, plus 2 small bite sized pieces of chocolate that were edible but nothing special. So, for me, I ate 1 bite of salad, 2 bites of meat, 2 tablespoons of watery mashed potatoes, and a bite of chocolate. The only things worse than the food were the service and atmosphere. We arrived at 7:30 and were there till 10:00, not enjoying ourselves, hungry, and listening to an overly loud and out of tune lounge lizard singer. We had to ask repeatedly for refills on soft drinks, and the wine we ordered did not come until after dinner. Granted, it only took 2 minutes to eat the 2 bites of dinner, but still the wine should have been served within an hour or so, yes? The place was not overly busy, with only about half the tables full, so we could not find a way to excuse the poor service. Worst service ever! Worst food ever! A complaint and refusal to pay by one of the couples resulted in a reduction to the bill for the price of their meals. The rest of us received no response to our (polite and quiet) complaints. In retrospect, I wish we had all refused to pay and been a little less polite. With the 22% required gratuity the bill was over $200 per couple and we needed to stop at McDonalds on the way home to get something edible.

We had very high hopes for the Chaz because of all the great reviews we had read. We were also attracted to the whole "live jazz music" aspect as well because it sounded very nice. We went on a Tuesday and decided to get the "Dinner for Two on Tuesday" because it sounded like great value for the food and a bottle of wine. For our Starters I ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes that were very good, but they were not green tomatoes but rather red. My boyfriend got the Caesar salad and his salad looked like it had been sitting out on the pass for quite a while, some of his lettuce leaves were wilted and had that brown sickly looking shade to them. The salad itself reminded me of a Big Mac of all things, it tasted exactly like the BM "secret sauce", not good at all. For our Entrees I ordered the Atlantic Salmon with polenta and boiled peanuts, to be completely honest with you as soon as we got our entrees I noticed they looked a bit "lived in", like they had been sitting out for a while just waiting to get picked up, maybe the last person who ordered the salmon didnt want it after all and thats what I got. The only good thing about the Steak Dianne that my boyfriend got was the mashed potato croquette with bleu cheese. The steak itself needed a lot more seasoning and also looked like it had sat out for quite a while before we got our entrees. We obviously werent expecting super amazing steak because Chaz is not a steakhouse but I mean really. The creme brulee was nothing to write home about, kinda watery and not very creamy but at least it wasnt burnt. I think what was best about the Chaz was the waitstaff, they were very attentive, nice, and professional. The food was edible and that was about it. Maybe we went on an off night, maybe we caught them on their slow night, but weve had many "for Two" dinners in many restaurants and in those restaurants it didnt feel like we were ordering off the value menu, and thus got lower quality food. That is what it felt like at the Chaz. We were expecting so much, it was such a disappointment.

I would love to give Chaz five stars, as I can honestly say that every soup, appetizer, entree and dessert my husband and I have consumed there is always prepared to perfection. It has a lovely ambiance and the live music is always delightful. But the past two times we have gone the service has been TERRIBLE. In both cases we were served by a woman named Carrie. Last night we did not see our server for 25 minutes, and other staff members were kind enough to bring our bread, entrees, and refill our drinks. When a manager asked about our experience I stated that the food was incredible even if our server was MIA. Although she did quickly reappear, there was no apology and she would literally not respond to my husband and Is thanks for refilling our glasses, etc. To be perfectly honest with restaurants like Michael Smith, Blue Stem, Webster House and Le Fou Frog all in the same price range, I am not certain we will be coming back as all of those restaurants have always delivered impeccable service as well as food.

Made reservations weeks in advance for NYE with my husband. Service was so terrible--we kept laughing about how our experiences at Jack Stack and Cheesecake Factory (seriously) were so much better! We were staying at the Raphael for our honeymoon, so it was really strange to experience such an amazing hotel with great staff, and then go down a few floors to dine in such a mess. Spoke to the manager who offered us breakfast coupons and told us they were "overwhelmed with it being NYE". Sorry Raphael, but The Chaz was unfortunately the low point of our Kansas City honeymoon. **The Raphael knocked $160 off our stay for our unfortunate experience at The Chaz, which we greatly appreciate. The Raphael has a really kind staff--its just so strange how different The Chaz is in comparison :/

Had dinner here with friends. They recently hired a new chef, Charles dAblaing formerly of The Webster House. The food was incredible! Our waiter (Ill get to him in a minute) recommended the crab cake, the ceasar and the filet. All delicious, but the filet was a dream worth repeating. One of our party was delighted and surprised to see fried green tomatos on the menu. Our waiter let us know Charles is a southern boy and pointed out a few places it comes through on the menu. Ill go back and be more adventurous. Now, I have to talk about our waiter. Josh was knowledgable, funny and above all kind. I cant recall ever feeling so welcomed and cared for by a server. Wonderful live music (on a weekday!) as well. Were looking forward to our next dinner with Josh (and that filet) at Chaz.
