Oakland Cemetery is my favourite place in Atlanta, the city that Ive called home since 1983. This is the citys oldest cemetery and its oldest landmark (in continuous use). A 48-acre oasis of nature, history, wildlife, gardens, & architecture smack dab in downtown Atlanta. A photographers dream. A peaceful haven in and of the city. Oaklands regular volunteer corps is highly-regarded and well-organised with an exceptionally rewarding program that requires patience, persistence, and commitment. Applications for tour guide and visitors center volunteers are accepted ONCE PER YEAR, as these roles require extensive training and monthly commitments. Volunteers may also participate in special events, garden workdays, and private events. Additional volunteers are always needed for special events and garden work, so non-corps members may get involved, too! I didnt know that until becoming a member, so I thought Id spread the word :) NOTE REGARDING HOURS: Oakland Cemetery is a public park and is open from dawn until dusk 365 days a year. The hours of operation indicated are those of the Visitors Center/Museum Shop, which is OPEN on WEEKENDS from APRIL to OCTOBER (hours vary). Submitted corrections (detailed all hours) to this Google+ listing (pending review).

Beautiful and peaceful, Oakland Cemetery, provides a memorable way to spend a leisurely sunny day. After parking across the street and grabbing a cup of coffee from Octane (hipster joint across the street), we spent the day wandering around the famous graves and admiring the gardens. (No admittance Fee) Make sure to stop at the Visitors Center and Museum Shop. The shop is staff by knowledgeable and passionate volunteers who can provide you with a self-guided tour map, free brochures and burial records. The shop features items made by local artists and a clean restroom and refreshments. Check out their website to see what events are taking place. The cemetery comes alive during the month of October, with a festival and tours to boot!

There are some interesting facts on the tour, and its an overall worthwhile visit, but unless youre really into cemetaries its not a must-see, I think. It was interesting to see all the Jewish headstones (I had no idea there was a Jewish community in Atlanta going back nearly 200 years), and its quiet and relaxing if you need a place to chill out. I wish I was in town for the pre-Halloween tour they do, though -- that actually sounds pretty amazing. People dress up like the folks who are buried, and tell their stories next to the mausoleums etc., at night before Halloween. I would really like to go to that!

The smartest history buffs work here. I never expected to be obsessed with a cemetery until I came here for a tour. The history, headstones and mausoleums make for an amazing eye candy tour. Great place to take your visitors because of the Atlanta history lesson that the guides give you. Date night idea that will be memorable. Go now and if you are lucky they have a ghost night tour worth dropping everything to go and witness.

One of my favorite spots in Atlanta. They have an array of walking tours that guide you through the beautiful cemetery with gorgeous mausoleums. If youre into geo-caching, there are a couple to be found among the graves of famous Atlantians such as Bobby Jones and Margaret Mitchell. With lots of dining options nearby, this is a great place to spend a day exploring old Atlanta. Their spring and halloween 5K races are super fun!

Beautiful and extensive. Whether youre interested in the history it contains or youre just looking for a scenic place to stroll, this is a nice place to go. They allow dogs and youll frequently see tours on foot and by Segway. Across Memorial youll find Tin Lizzys, Six Feet Under, The Republic House, and other (including across Boulevard in Cabbage Town) for lunch or dinner after youre done touring the cemetery.

People told me about the cemetery when I moved here, but it took me a while to visit. A cemetery - what could be so great? This place is a must visit! Its truly beautiful with walking paths and views of the skyline. I love the events here: Run Like Hell 5K, Tunes from the Tomb, Halloween Tour, etc. This place has so much history and is truly worth visiting.

This cemetery offers so much - a unique view of the ATL skyline, eye candy everywhere you turn, and so much history that you could spend years studying it and never know it all. Do yourself a favor and book one of their many guided tours, and you will also fall in love with this city treasure. Reminds me of the cemeteries I grew up loving in New Orleans!

A simple joy for me in travels is to take some quiet time to explore a cities past through their cemeteries. This is a beautiful spot and at special places on the grounds you also get an awesome view of the downtown skyline. Take your time, this is a good sized plot right next to all the other more energetic things this city has to offer.

This place was a lot of fun if you are a history buff, or just enjoy learning about the Atlanta area. Its full of history from the early Atlanta settlers to the African American slaves that were buried directly next to confederate Soldiers of the Civil War. It also has guided and self guided tours if that is what you are looking for.

I very much enjoy visiting cemeteries and this one is always a pleasure to visit. Its big, beautiful and its very well taken care of for being an old cemetery. Full of history and fun to walk around in and take pictures. Havent had a chance to enjoy any of the special events they host sometimes but will hopefully get to this year!

I always resisted cemeteries as a kid, since they seemed to be a default stop for my parents on every vacation. The last time they visited us in Atlanta, though, I took my parents here because its awesome. A beautiful place for walking, with all kinds of interesting headstones. Worth a visit if youre in the area.

History may not exactly "come alive" here but there is almost endless amounts of it (history that is) here. Very cool place to visit and a must for any person or family that come to ATL on vacation or even if your here on business I would still recommend finding the time to check it out.

Really fun time learning about history and daydreaming about who/what/when from the info on the stones, plus learning more about Atlanta! If you appreciate history, get in on the tours here. Theres actually a variety, sometimes they are themed.

Beautiful and peaceful place. So much history. Would definitely recommend picking up the self-guided walking tour booklet from the gift shop. A great, inexpensive way to give out of town visitors a great Atlanta experience.

Oakland Cemetery is full of history, Victorian symbolism, and beautiful gardens. They offer a general overview tour about the cemetery and some of the people buried there, and they offer special topic tours as well.

Well maintained by the city and volunteers. The Confederate Soldiers section is very well tended by the cemeterys staff. Its a great place to walk, unwind after work and enjoy the view of downtown Atlanta.
