Ive been going to Wekiva Marina (now Wekiva Island) since the seventies and now that I live in Daytona Beach I drop in 8 or 10 times a year. Im a wildlife photographer and after spending 5 or 6 hours at Lake Apopka I usually drop over here to have a few overpriced beers and take a few photos. This past Sunday I was chatting with 3 men of Indian descent in the bar and a girl was sitting in what appeared to be a Yoga position in the adjacent courtyard so I snapped two quick shots. About 20 minutes later a Seminole County policeman in uniform came up to me and said to come with him to talk privately. I followed him and he said that someone complained about me taking their photograph. All the shots I had taken were of dogs at the bar and boaters coming down the river with the exception of the girl in the courtyard so I easily found the 2 shots and showed them to him on the LCD screen. He told me to delete them and I said that anytime someone is uncomfortable about a photo I took I always respect their request and so I did. Since his attitude was somewhat bossy I reminded him that although I did comply to your request it was within my rights to have refused since this was within the public domain. He abruptly turned and walked away so I went back to my stool. Shortly after I was confronted by a manager who said that I had taken a photo of a customer. I said that the issue was already taken care of and that I complied with the deputy even though it was within my rights to keep the shots. The manager said that I could no longer use my camera at this facility and that from now on if he saw me with my camera bag I would be escorted out. I paid my tab and left and Ill never come back. Since almost everyone there has a cell phone and Ive never seen a sign on the premises stating no photos someone will inevitably file a class action suit and if I hear about it Ill be glad to help.

I was a little reluctant to go to Wekiva Island after reading some of the reviews but the majority of the reviews were positive so I chose to drive the 80 miles to have a father-daughter day with my 20 year old daughter. Upon our early arrival, we were the first patrons there. Plenty of parking, a nice young man cleaning the grills showing us where the spotless clean bathrooms were. He then showed us to the bar where we were met with a very upbeat clerk to assist us in our check in and canoe rental. We were then on our way to our canoe where another polite young man met us, gave us our gear and assisted us into our canoe. We then paddled towards Wekiwa State Park and Springs and on our way encountered abundant wildlife and a beautiful dead calm there and back. We then paddled up Rock Springs Run a little and came back due to the current. We then rode back by the Island and up the river to Buffalo Tram and turned around and came back. A beautiful trip the entire way, met many people later on down the river. Will return with more friends and family. Highly recommend.

Its a good set-up. Cabanas, kayaks, and everything are fine enough. But the beer is overpriced, and they monopolize the market anyways by not allowing you to bring your own coolers, drinks, etc. I dont know what this place has to offer that you couldnt get just about anywhere else. The staff was mostly nice, but there was one male bartender that had a real ego problem. He seemed to be having a rough day, but taking it out on the customers is a no-no in service. I wish I got this guys name, but essentially he was just loud and demonstrative, while whining about customers within earshot. He then kicked someone out for peeing outside, after he told them they could not use the indoor bathroom because of a private party. Not sure if I wouldve kicked the guy out, but an obscene amount of profanity coming out of an employees mouth while he seemed to take the issue personally is not professional in the least bit. We had a nice day here for the most part, but the prices, general overcrowding, and poor customer relations weve seen make this a one-and-done place for us.

This place is overpacked, overpriced, extremely unprofessional and rude to the customers. They kick customers out and cuss them virtually anything. I know many who this has happened to. One employee in particular, Im sure everyone knows who I am referring to apparently thinks she owns the waterway and threatened to call the cops on my fiance for sitting in it conversing with a friend who was there, simply because he was kicked out over 5 years ago over a disagreement they had, mind you it was raining and he didnt want to run his boat in the rain with our 2 year old daughter in the boat. She said go anyways....hmmmmm. I guess someone should inform her;) I truly wish people would see this place for what it is. Im all about local business support and i love love the river, but this is in no way a business i would support. There have been too many bad experiences and service over the years, no kicking out needed for me....I would never waste my time or money. One star simply because I couldnt post without giving it at least 1...lol.

My wife and I frequent the island in the evening and really enjoy the live entertainment. We have met some really great people along the way and the prices are reasonable. They have a strong selection on tap and the craft bar is well stocked. Wekiva Island only serves beer and wine, which is really a good thing. Ive noticed that the Island is either ranked very high or extremely low, and I guess thats due to individual experiences. My personal negatives are much like others - dogs, overcrowding and at times, it seems like the redneck Riviera. My positives are much like others: the bar, the scenery, the friendliness and clean facilities. I liken the experience as to going to a theme park: know when to go - go in the off season, go in the evening or go during the week. Its absolutely one of the most peaceful places in the area when its not crowded, yet it can be a loud, obnoxious place when its packed. On a side, if I had small kids, I wouldnt bring them on the weekend. Overall though, I truly enjoy this establishment.

This is my favorite place for good wine, great music, and fantastic service. The food is also surprisingly good for a small kitchen. I highly recommend the inside wine bar. The live music is simply wonderful, and reminiscent of my days in Nashville, where you could expect to hear good music in any little establishment. I recommend Wekiva Island to everyone I talk to in the area and it never disappoints. Since discovering it a year ago with my boyfriend, we are "regulars." All of the staff are consistently attentive and friendly--I frankly find it shocking that anyone has experienced a different result in the reviews on this site. (Some neighbors are truly unhappy this place exists nearby, and I wonder if the source of their objections to this beautiful, very well-maintained facility lie therein). With Fred at the helm in the evening, and Tracy, and Mike as staff, you are guaranteed great service and a cozy, inviting atmosphere.
