Update on 5/2017: The pro (David) at Coal Creek offered us a free round to make up for our very slow round last month. I was not disappointed. Super fast round (4.25 hours), course is in great shape, and the rangers were on it this time. I hope it lasts! But for now, it looks like David is really putting forth the effort, which is so great to see because this course has such a nice layout and is very unique. Update on 4/2017: I gave the course another chance. Big mistake. The course is nicer than before, but the 18 hole round took 5.5 hours to play. We waited on every hole. There was not a ranger to be seen until, get this, the 18th hole! Why was the ranger messing around on the 18th hole instead of getting people on the other holes to play faster? That course is a joke and is overpriced. Avoid it at all costs. This course was closed for 1.5 years after the big flood in Colorado. Before the flood the course was fairly well maintained and had a nice diversity of holes. Pace of play was way too slow for the $65 price tag for 18 holes though. Now the course is unfortunately owned by the city of Louisville. The price for 18 basically has not changed. In fact, its MORE expense in the mornings now. But the course is a disaster. Fairways have crabgrass everywhere, greens are rock hard, and there are hackers everywhere hitting golf balls over your head. Slow pace of play with not a ranger to be found on the course. Its run by the city so what do you expect. Its terrible and maybe worth $45 per round, not $65. Stay away from this once-nice course. The city of Louisville ruined it.

I see two reviews here that, to my mind, do not present a fair or accurate picture of the newly reopened golf course. The course was severely damaged by the 2013 flood and had to be virtually rebuilt. In the process, a comprehensive plan to enhance the course was accelerated. All greens were rebuilt and subtle contouring was provided. Although a little slow (although that will improve as the greens can be mower closer) they present a fair but challenging putting experience. Sight lines have been improved with some cart paths and bridges moved out of the line of play. Several decayed cottonwood trees were lost in the flood and a replanting schedule is in place. Scrub has been cleaned up to restore the course to the architects intended vision. Criticism of the fairways and rough is warranted but the fairways will rapidly grow in to a great condition and preferred lies are being played where needed. The secondary rough is excessive (and almost guarantees a lot or unplayable ball)but the greens staff have it in hand. A new and enthusiastic playing and maintenance staff has been hired and they welcome all comments on bringing the course up to perfect condition. Come, play and enjoy.

Of the nicer public courses across Denver, Coal Creek is a great, unique challenge not offered by many other places. I like how tight a lot of the holes are - big trees are a nice feature Ive become accustomed to not having on a course in Colorado. While I was expecting to have Hwy 36 ruin the holes that face it, I found finishing along Hwy 36 to be a nice, comical reminder that I could be stuck in rush hour traffic instead of on the golf course. The course takes driver out of your hands a LOT. I love hitting my driver and wished there were a few more opportunities to do so. I could see this course being very interesting to play in a scramble with the opportunity to hit driver without such consequences. When I played (7/27/2013), the course was in great shape. Beautiful tee to green and the greens were in great condition. They could have rolled faster, but oh well. I hope it has survived the flood without major damages. Ive walked by the course a few times since the flood and it looks like the holes along the creek were definitely underwater for a while. That being said, The third green (right on the creek) was in good shape and just needed the drift wood removed.

I played 4 times since course reopened 6/28/2015. Greens are firm and rolling fabulously with more undulation than previously adding character not seen in most other courses in the area. There are 78 new tees plus a new larger driving range and 57 new bunkers. Some fairway grow-in is still needed in a few places as damage from the flood on 9/2013 and construction equipment took a toll. There is a local rule through the green which mitigates the minor inconvenience. All new staff in maintenance, pro shop and restaurant (The Mine - good food and service - breakfast and lunch with dinners planned in August) which is a sub-contract to the City. All employees are friendly and helpful learning their new jobs and the new course. New fescue grasses in several places is a major change for many golfers affecting pace of play as golfers look for their ball. Plan is to lower the height of the fescue and thin out in several locations but my view is that it adds character to the course like a few courses in Brighton and elsewhere I have played recently and causes one to focus more on shot selection and direction. Enjoyed the experience and will continue to play here often.

I have played Coal Creek three times this summer and I am highly impressed. Playing two sets of tees provided both a challenging and fair-play experience for myself and my father-in-law. My 12 year old was able to make a day of it from the front tees without having to play over the larger water hazards. I found the tees and fairways lush without requiring to employ the clean and place rule. What was most impressive was the conditions of the greens. Although there are signs of folks not repairing their ball-marks the greens themselves roll very well and no evidence of burn, disease or invasive grasses. The layout of the holes provides a variety of shots off the tee and good decision making if scoring well is your priority. The staff were courteous, golf marshalls helpful and friendly and the food at clubhouse was levels above the typical club-grub.

Played Coal Creek today for the 1st time since their re-model. I cant fully express how disappointed I am with the quality of the course and the outright terrible service offered by the golf staff. When we called to make a time for today, nobody told us the greens had just been aerated. The green fees were discounted so I let that one go. As we are making the turn, we are told for the 1st time that the back 9 is closed. Nobody gave us that information when we checked in. I would have walked away. I asked for a refund and they offered me a raincheck. After some haggling, I did get half my money back. Now, Coal Creek has lost a customer for life. I will never return to that course and I would encourage others to go somewhere else to play. They dont care about their customers at Coal Creek.

Coal Creek Golf Course was incredibly generous in allowing our family to host a fundraising event a couple of weeks ago in support of our daughter, who suffers from a rare type of kidney disease. The golf pro David was gracious enough to help us plan the event, aid with logistics on the day of, and he and Steven (of The Sweet Spot Cafe) went above and beyond our expectations by donating over $250 worth of gift certificates for our raffle drawing. Our group of about 60 friends and family members were so impressed with the facility, and we were able to raise $1,566 for our daughters cause to benefit NephCure Kidney International. We were so thankful for this opportunity and only hope that we can make it bigger and better for seasons to come!
