Ive been to Hotel Erwin in June 2017 to stay for about two nights at the beginning of my Westcoast Tour. I booked a (relatively expensive) Kingsize Ocean View Room. I had ocean views, but only sidewise, so this was not what I expected at this prize to be honest. The room itself was tidy, clean and had a modern style. However, my room was directly below the Roof Top Bar and directly next to emergency steps from it. This led people coming down the stairs and doing phone calls right 2-3 meters next to my bed! Sleeping with windows opened was impossible, not mentioning some drunk people climbing over my balcony fence! The roof top itself provides beautiful views above Venice, consider its getting very cold at the evening! Nevertheless, I used to get up early in the mornings and enjoyed beautiful runs at Venice Beach which is a 2 minute walk away from the hotel. If you like to enjoy some breakfast options, theres a complimentary Keurig coffee machine on the room, the Barlo at the hotel and many other options around the promenade, for example the sidewalk café. You have to consider that food around Venice can be very expensive though. I will write another seperate review about the breakfast options, so just have an eye on those ones. If you like to keep it low budget, you may visit a mall beforehand and get yourself some stuff to enjoy at sunrise on your balcony. Back to the Hotel: The bathroom was a modern style with much space. The hotel even provides two different fancy bathrobes, just checkout peoples pictures on Instagram. My room had an (unnecessary) huge TV with all common US-programs. I received a key for the minibar, but it didnt work, but I didnt bother for it anyway. The hotel has only one elevator. That being said, you should consider waiting or taking the steps in "rush hours". Check in/check out is easy, so nothing to say about that. Last thing to mention is that you really should consider taking Uber or ordering a cab by yourself to get anywhere. The receptionist ordered a cab for me and said its going to be about USD 50. I paid USD 75 for a taxi which didnt even look like one.

Let me preface this by saying I have never written a review before but after my stay here I felt like I had to share. I was on a work trip in la for about a month and was in and out of this hotel during that time. I arrived to the hotel at 3 am after my flight was delayed with two suitcases and the person sitting on the front desk couldnt stand up from doing nothing to give me a hand with my bags-let alone open the doors. The rooms here are nothing special. My shower had no hot water or pressure even after I called the front desk and was assured theyd fix it. I also couldnt find a fridge in my room and I asked one of the employees and they told me there wasnt one. A week later when I was rechecking into the hotel I found out that every room has a fridge they just forgot to give me a key. My company had made two reservations back to back at the Erwin so I had requested that I stay in the same room which seemed to be no problem at all. When I left for work the next morning they called me telling me that I had to get out of that room causing a huge inconvenience. I had a car for a couple of days that I parked in their lot never being told that I would be charged $42 a night until my last night there. How do you not tell your guests that they have to pay for parking?? The lady at the front desk assumed I knew there was a fee because every place in la has a fee.....Im clearly not from la thats why Im staying at the hotel. I hated staying here. The staff made me feel insignificant (I had been staying here for 3 weeks and every time I tried to go to my room the same guy asked to see my key to make sure I was a guest) no one ever offered to help with my bags, they were too busy on their cell phones. Also the bar upstairs is a joke. Get ready to listen to the worst music, watch girls take selfies, and pay waaaaaay to much for food and drinks. And dont bother sitting down in one of the many empty tables, you will be asked to move in the least polite way.

I booked this hotel because of the 3.5 star rating on Hotwire and expected a nice room with a great view. Unfortunately the disappointment started upon arrival. After checking into my room, I looked out the window and saw the view of the local alley-way instead of the beachfront as was advertised. I immediately contacted the front desk to change rooms and was first told by the clerk that another room was available but somehow after checking with her manager, I was told that room was no longer available.Strange! Instead I was offered free breakfast at their tiny restaurant and free valet parking (which saved me $30 dollars a day). The hotel is fairly old and has been updated to the modern look that you see in the pictures. The room and bathroom is small and furniture can be described as Target chic. Definitely not worth the price I paid. Although the room was close to the beach, a nicer place even a bit father away would have been a 100x better. This place may be a step up for those who generally stay at a cheap motel, but its definitely not 3.5 stars. I would rate it a 1.5-2 stars. Its not family friendly and you are asked to have a reservation if wanting to eat at their roof-top restaurant.

My experience is with the Erwins Rooftop Restaurant and Bar. My Auntie has lived in this area for over 35 years. She frequents the coffee shop and we went to the rooftop bar once and had a wonderful time. Today we had family in from Washington, DC and took them to this place for after-brunch drinks. We were told the wait was an hour. We had no problem, ordered great margaritas and enjoyed the view. After a while we watched people walk in and just sit down. We were told they had reservations. One group was asked to move and they refused, but was still served. After about an hour and 15 minutes, we was told it was okay to sit in one area, and then asked to get up. Once again we were seated in another area, but yet another employee said we could not sit there. I asked if there was an issue with our skin, as we were the one people of color there. An 1/2 hour after our initial 1 hour wait, we left. The 2 stars are only for the margaritas. If you are black, step back, you will not be served here
