“beautiful Japanese/Italian garden. small ponds, gardens, bridges, mansion and zoo, greenery will mesmerize you” spreading over 100 acres... though I am not a big fan of a park and all, still. and glad I chose to come here. The main entrance is through Visitor centre [as I was lost and thought area nearby lake is Maymont park]. its very beautiful, unlike typical parks. USP is its greenery. (check out my pics). it has 3-4 miles of a loop which will cover your whole park. Take the map at the visitor centre and try to stick with it and in this fashion, you ll complete whole tour. The mansion is not that big but beautiful. it has one small garden for wedding purpose and its beautiful. Sitting in the gazebo and overlook the mountains, quite q view. it has 2-3 Japanese/Italian gardens and its amazing. fishes swim in small ponds. one small bridge is there and one fall is coming through mountains make it a picture book. they have a small zoo. Vulture-Eagle-Owl-Bison-Bear-Bob cat is there properly caged. for us, it was raining, and after rain, it becomes more beautiful. definitely recommended...

A must see if passing through. We were there for just under 3 hours and got a tour of the house and visited the 2 gardens, wish we could have stayed longer but we had to get back home to Maryland. A tour is the only way to see the inside of the house (well besides the basement layer which does have some rooms and displays, it is also where you can sign up for a tour). The tour is free but they do have some boxes spread around the place for donations ($5 a person is the suggested donation, which is very reasonable and less than a stop at mcdonalds, but you never feel forced into giving a donation). Free parking. I highly suggest taking the tour to see the inside, our guide was very friendly. The yard is very nice and I saw many couples and families laying out blankets under the trees for a picnic lunch. The garden is also very beautiful and even has a waterfall. The path to the japanese garden does have many steps that may be difficult for some with mobility issues or stollers.

This is one of my favorite places to relax and explore in Richmond. Its very family and kid friendly. Theres beautiful gardens, a mansion, and other properties to view. The tour of the mansion is free! They accept donations. They have a nature exhibit thats indoors to view some water life and they have otters right now! Its $4 per adult. They have lots of animals to view on site. The new barn thats been built houses friendly animals that you can pet. The scenery is stunning and a great backdrop for photos, especially in the gardens. On weekends they normally will try to have a food truck or vendor of some kind during nice weather. Plan on wearing good walking shoes if you want to be on the property awhile because the grounds are 100 acres and has lots of hills, some are steep. Keep track of them on Facebook for events to attend. Its great to go any day of the week!

Maymont wasnt anything I was expecting.I thought Maymont was going to be more similar to a southern plantation. Instead it is a huge park with a beautiful mansion, petting zoo, caged birds and a caged bear. The property was left to the city by the Dooleys, an upscale Richmond couple. Entrance is free, but a $5 donation is recommended. The house tour is free and well worth the time. The house has been left as it was lived in by the original owners. The house and the furnishings are extravagant and beautiful. For those fashion lovers - the personalized Louis Vuitton trunk is pretty amazing. The grounds are beautiful and a wonderful way to escape the city while still in the city. I would recommend this place for families. Bring a picnic and hangout by the huge rolling hill. -Travelationship

The historical significance is the real story. The gardens are impressive & serene. The care of the animals was lacking & noticeable. The Highland Cow was beautiful, unique & left in the steep pasture on the sloping hillside with his bad ankle preventing him from making his way back up. I was disgusted that a nice level bit of pasture was not afforded such a loyal veteran member of Maymont. The animals in the petting zoo were left often in very damp pens. The animals appeared to be aggravated by ear problems. A vet log would be interesting to see. We were so disturbed by the lack of kindness for the Highland Cow & the lack of attention to proper quarters for the bunnies & such, we stopped going & lent our support to rescue groups who took in farm animals & cared nicely for them.

If I had to pick one thing I would change about Maymont...it would be to get rid of mosquitoes. Thats obviously not possible, but in all seriousness this place is gorgeous. A little bit of every type of Virginia terrain to be found here - sloping grassy lawns, giant trees, flowers, ponds, waterfalls, monuments...I could go on and on. Have been with family and walked around the estate together, been with friends and my girlfriend, and have been by myself. Any way you experience Maymont, if you open your eyes and appreciate the expanse of nature all around you then you will leave the park feeling refreshed and energized. This place is absolutely beautiful and a MUST visit for anybody wishing to see the best of what Richmond has to offer.

The best, free thing to do in Richmond. You can literally make a day of this and have so much fun! There are a good amount of gardens and a nature center which has an aquarium thing in it, and is just a good place to slip into if it starts raining or if its ungodly hot. Very clean park, and great for picnics! They also do an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter and have a cool historic mansion that you can take a tour of. It really has something for people of all ages! Lots of people take senior pictures/ engagement photos here! Definitely be ready to walk though because the place is huge! Also, please note that they do not currently allow dogs inside the park and they do enforce this rule!

Maymont is a beautiful place to visit. I think it deserves multiple visits as the scale of the place can make it hard to see everything in one afternoon. The attractions here are lovely and pretty well maintained which is something this place has advantages over the other parks in the area. The is a Japanese style Zen Garden, wild animal exhibits, a petting zoo, and a nature center to name a few. Maymont is a great spot to bring friends and family or visit alone. Entrance to the grounds is free but there are also paid exhibits here. They have several stations for donations around the grounds and I recommend donate if you love this place like I do.

A great day trip, Maymont is a beautifully maintained estate property with much to see and do. Visit the picturesque gardens, visit the nature center/farm to feed animals. We also took a tour of the mansion, a must see. The house is full of history and the tour was excellently done. My young children became restless during the tour and rather than just kicking us out, the tour guide called a second guide to quickly take us through the house so that we could see all the rooms. Our family was treated with such respect; it is no surprise why this place is so highly rated. I would pack a lunch next time to enjoy a picnic on the beautiful lawns.
