First, the course itself is a great value for the price and the condition. I honestly didnt know what to expect playing here for the first time, and knowing it was a muni. I was very pleasantly surprised by the conditions. Fairways were cut nicely and well kept and the greens rolled true...and fast enough to provide a challenge. The reason the rating is only 3 stars is because of the starter. We told him our group were all about 10 handicappers and he told us we had "no business playing from the blue tees," which for their tips, are under 6,400 yards. He also threatened us about playing slow because we insisted on playing from the blue tees. He said "there are a lot of groups behind you and you better not hold up the course." Meanwhile after three holes we had caught up to the twosome in front of us (we were a group of three), and no one was even within 3-4 holes behind us the entire day. I dont care if this guy has been a starter at this course "for years," he was extremely rude. If yo dont want people playing from 6300 yards, dont offer those tees.

My friend bought a round of golf for all of the groomen in his wedding. from the begining the Marshall followed us from hole to hole hampering us. On the 14th hole we were waiting for the older gentleman ahead of us to finish when we were told the group behind us had called the clubhouse complaining about the pace of play, so we were asked to leave theurse. when, we exned that we were being held up by the group ahead of u, the maratened to call the police.
Front nine looked a little busy so I asked to start on the back. Staff neglected to mention that the course is in the worst shape its seen all year. (Back nine that is, I cannot speak for the front and Im not going to bother trying) Teeing off meant avoiding the watering system while teeing up on mud. I was just about ready to walk off after playing behind a rudely slow foursome. Dont waste your time, money or frustration here, go to Reems Creek.
Best "layout" in Asheville as far as variety, shot selection, having to execute and I have played them all. I dont know if the City of Asheville and the type/level of player this course normally gets appreciates what they have; an "un-touched" Classic Donald Ross Golf Course. If you are a student of the game and low handicap player, this Course is a must!
I frequent this course a lot during the summer (and sometimes in the winter if they are open). It’s a very good value and the course is nicely laid out. You can golf the front nine if you’re looking for nice open green-ways, or take on the winding back nine for a little more of a challenge. All in all it’s a great course at an unbeatable price.
The front nine of this course is very flat and wide. Not a very typical mountain course to start off. Fairways and greens and not very well maintained but for $38 for 18 holes its not bad at all. Very wide open and forgiving so its a great place to work out that hook or slice youve got. Back nine has more of a rolling and mountainous feel.
Not worth the money! $45 is way too much for this course. The back 9 is in horrible shape! No 6somes, the ranger split us up. Also, the course requires everyone to have their own golf bag. 2 people cant share clubs... Even if its your own 12yr old son?!?! What a joke! He only owns 3 clubs. Dont waste your money here
In the past i shied away from this course due to its condition but this past year it has become a very fine and well maintained course. It is pleasure to play and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. It has become one of my most favored courses in the area. highly recommend a play there
As far as I can say, as one to have played this course for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised! Fair pricing for the maintenance and challenge that the course offered. And, with booking a tee time for two, on the interwebs, I got a discounted rate! VERY PLEASED...nuff said!

Played there on Friday May 8,2010 the course is terrible. The tee boxes havent been mowed in weeks and the fair ways are terrible no grass and full of weeds. Dont waste your money go to a good course and enjoy your day of golf.
Wonderful old Donald Ross Muni course. Front 9 is flat but the back is hilly and very tricky. Bent grass greens were very true. Tees and fairways were a little shabby but it was great fun for $40 green fee/cart.
Its a classic course, but they are having difficulty growing grass on the back nine. This makes the 10th hole unfair unless you can hit a high draw with your driver 275 plus yards.

Decent value. Staff could be more friendly and they could keep it in a little better shape - even with the amount of traffic it receives. Best Donald Ross value around though.
Extremely well maintained course. Only complaints are that we couldnt share rented clubs, each person had to have their own dedicated set which was expensive
Course in decent shape. Most greens are above average. Nice course overall. Enjoyed the round. Guy behind the counter was a jerk.
Great value and they keep the greens in good condition. The staff is pretty nice and the course has some interesting components
Donald Ross design in decent shape for a muni. Reasonably priced green fees and snack bar, friendly staff.
The man at the front desk is extremely rude, has no couthe, and shouldnt be in customer service.
Enjoyed both days. Back nine will give you a run for the money but its wort it.
Great value. Great condition. Friendly staff. Fun course to play.
Fun, affordable golf course right in the middle of Asheville!
Greens are in good shape this year. Fairways need some work
