Nestled back comfortably in a clearing in the woods just off Old Lynchburge Road, is Wisdom Oak Winery. The vintner/proprietors, Jason and Laura are a really nice young couple with full-time professions and have done a great job rehabbing the old winery that was there. Their tasting consists of 3 whites, 2 blushes, and 3 reds (all nice actually) - costs $7 but includes their logod glass, and is free if you buy 3 bottles; perfectly reasonable and very easy to do. The whites were typically what youd expect and have probably grown to love here in Virginia with a Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc, and a blend of the two with a Traminette twist. The chard was finished in a neutral oak which is my personal favorite. The Reserve Rose was the nicer of the blushes and was a surprise as it was already in the barrels from the previous owner and had to go thru some testing to ensure it was even fit to bottle. The reds were quite delish with the fall-like season finally arriving. The house red was a cab franc/cab sav blend, the Meritage added Merlot, and the Merlot itself was Smokey and full bodied with a nice smooth finish. None of the 8 were meh in this writers opinion and certainly worth the stop on our way home. :)

We visited Blenheim (owned by Dave Mathews) and enjoyed the wine there! The server suggested Sugarleaf if we liked reds, and dont be put off by the one lane narrow dirt road. I was glad we ventured onward. The road was narrow, twisty and rolling, but the tasting room was nice, the staff knowledgeable, and the wine is fantastic! How good you ask? Served in the White House good! Dont travel there in a very low sports car, but anything else will make the trip. You might have to back up for 1/4 mile if someone is coming the other way, but it is well worth the trip.

Went to Wisdom on "Black Friday". They advertised they had two for one tastings ($10) and also buy two get one free bottles. Sounded like a great deal. Paid the tasting free and then found they only had three wines to taste to start with, one which was not even their wine and another that they didnt have available to sell. We were told that they were closing for the season after that week. I really wished they would have done that prior to selling out of all their wine before wasting even $10

Our favorite vineyard-- in part because driving up to a small tasting room tucked away at the foot of rolling hills is so bucolic. The wines are also more balanced and consistent than most other VA vineyards which tend to be overwhelmingly sweet IMO. The reds are some of the best in the region. Its never been too crowded, and is the perfect place to share a bottle with the one you love on the patio. Perfect get away.

Exactly what Gary said. The place has character. Reds are their strong point, but not out of this world. This is the little vineyard you find that has potential to only get better with time. Coming here will be an enjoyable trip
