What a happy little accidental discovery this place was! So due to a parking adventure (I parked about .75mi away from the HMNS by accident) I got an serendipitous sightseeing trek to my original destination that I do not regret in the slightest! I am still not exactly sure how this place works as I literally just walked into a performance practice when I came up on the MOT, but by the signage I discerned that there are various cultural performances that take place here, all free (unless I misunderstood the wording). They start giving out the tickets at the box office at a certain time and until a certain time prior to the performance. From the looks of it, they had some very cool and interesting cultural performances coming up. The one I happened to see by happenstance was a Japanese drum and dance performance with some pretty impressive acrobatic routines! I was walking by when I heard some very large drums and decided to investigate. I walked into the amphitheater area and there was a group onstage, drumming and doing acrobatics, and then the stage rose with some lovely japanese women in full garb doing a fan dance to some gorgeous traditional japanese music! I took a seat and figured if I wasnt supposed to be there, someone would surely tell me, but no one ever approached me, so I was treated to a practice session for what I assume was an upcoming show and it was spectacular! I hope to catch one of the actual performances at this glorious outdoor (but covered) amphitheater since getting a free taste, I am hungry for more!

Im not sure how anyone could give this less than five stars. It is free, there is world-class entertainment (again, free) and you can BYOB. What you need to know: Tickets are available for free up to an hour before the show. If you get a ticket, make sure you are seated 15 minutes prior to curtain, because they will announce that any open seats are free game, at which point you can grab a seat even without a ticket. Seating on the lawn is great (and sometimes preferable). Bring your blanket or lawn chair and pay attention to which side to sit on for either (dont be the guy that blocks peoples view with a chair on the blanket side). Bring a picnic and drinks! The theater discourages glass for obvious reasons that it could break, so bring on the boxed wine and beer in a can! If you are a die-hard theater snob, be aware that you are going to get helicopter flyovers to the medical center, noisy kids, and people who dont care as much as you do. Remember, this is bringing art to the people. For free... This is one of the best things about Houston. Go to it.

This place used to give such great 5 de Mayo shows, this last one was so boring. Thats not the bad part though, because maybe their other shows are great. This review isnt so much about the theater, I think its great, specially since the shows are free. The terrible thing about my experience was the food and drink stand near the theater. DO NOT RISK BUYING THE FOOD FROM THE STAND!! At the 5 de Mayo show I had a cheeseburger and my toddler had a corndog (she took off the bread and only ate the sausage). I was going to take my own food but we ran out of time so we bought some there. A few hours later I was home feeling really sick. I spent literally ALL NIGHT puking. Thank goodness my toddler didnt get it too bad, she woke up at 3 A.M. and threw up and then again at 10. But I wasnt as lucky. I was puking and dry heaving so much that there were several times that I almost fainted. Then I was so weak I couldnt even get out of bed and ended up getting a fever. From now on I will always take my own food.

Im a native Houstonian in my 30s and up until last Friday had never been to Miller Outdoor Theatre (and this is one of many things at the park I never experienced as a child.) Often times I go to Hermann Park and wonder if I had the worst parents in the world. But, enough of my sob story. Miller Theatre is super awesome! Its an outdoor theatre that was designed in the early 1900s and puts on free events for locals to enjoy. Events vary from concerts, ballet, comedy to movies. Events are always free to sit on the hill, and if you really want a chair, you can go to the box office the morning of events to get tickets (also free.) Honestly, I was concerned that my ability to see and hear would be restricted way up on the lawn, but the show was great. I also was worried there would be so many people, it would be uncomfortable and crowded, but nope, I was wrong. I could not have had a more pleasant time and look forward to my next experience!

Whether you enjoy free show from the hill or the seats, youll have a great experience. Yes, every show is completely free. PRO TIPS ON HOW TO MILLER THEATRE: -Bring your own food and drinks, but glass containers are not allowed. -If you are going with a group or family and want to hangout and be social, or youre with someone you want to snuggle with, sit on the hill. -If you want to see everything, like actors faces, sit in the seats. -You do not need a ticket to sit in the covered seating area. At least 5-10 minutes before shows start, they will release the seats to be occupied by people who dont have tickets. Just wait by the entrances until the announcement is made. Ive never not been able to get a seat. -If you do get tickets, when they release seats you can move and upgrade yourself sometimes by multiple rows. -On the hill, its picnic blankets on the right, lawn chairs on the left.

Come here to see all the best performing arts Houston has to offer, for FREE. Im talking the ballet, the grand opera, the AD players, the orchestra, and more! Insider tips: 1) you can bring your own food and beverages, even into the covered reserved seating 2) the reserved covered seating becomes open to anyone 5 minutes before a performance starts 3) the concession stand is really affordable 4) you get to the lawn by just walking up the sides of the amphitheater 5) get to the box office around 20 minutes early to beat the lines for popular performances Only negatives are that the experience is dependent on the weather and that the staff can be hit or miss, but then again its free. Really happy Houston has this venue and does a great job keeping it clean. Happy arts-ing!

This place has a lot of activities throughout the summer into the early-to-mid fall here in Houston and its free. All of the events are free and its a great place for families to come and listen to great music and have great entertainment and to be entertained. Just watching it on the hill at Miller Outdoor Theater is a wonderful spot to do. You can also go to seating however you must go pick up the tickets early in the morning or middle in the afternoon and be there an hour before Showtime to have good seating. Other than that everything else is great. You will have to find parking which is available across the street at the park so this is a great spot to enjoy.
