As soon as you enter the Zoo, you will find on your right hand side a renovated aquarium. If you go left you will encounter the sea lions. from the entrance facing the sea lions, to your left you will find a reptile exhibit with snakes from different parts of the world, ranging from snakes found in the desert to snakes found in rain forest habitats. They have spiny tailed lizards which also live in the desert. A spectacular white alligator faces the entrance as you come in the reptile house. Amphibians, such as the poison dart frogs are also visible in the reptile house. Once you come out of the reptile house, if you go across the pond with fountains, on your right hand side, you will find birds from different parts of the world, they have an amazing exhibit of horn bills, parrots, macaws, etc. Once you come out of the ornithology section, you are at the fountain, go right towards the back of the fountain and you will come across the primates. They have a wide variety of primates from orangutans, chimpanzees, goeldi monkeys, mandrills, lemurs, and even gorillas, but the gorillas are in a totally different place, you will find them way in the back, passed the section where the giraffes and the rhinos are. Their habitat is a very well protected oasis with an outdoor and indoor spacious fenced areas where people can admire the wild beauty of these animals. For those studying botany, they have a butterfly outdoor garden and right across from that a carnivorous plant garden. In the giraffe habitat a new baby giraffe is growing, full energy and curiosity. The elephants on view are Asian elephants, in comparison to African elephants, these have smaller ears and more round heads. These are only a few examples of the some many animal species you can observe at the Houston Zoo along with plants and other attractions.

We love the Houston Zoo!! I call it our sons happy place because, even on the dreariest day, he can spend a few hours enjoying the wide variety of animals and leave with new knowledge, happily worn out! We have gone regularly since he was a baby. So much so, in fact, that one of his first words was "okapi"! The zookeepers are friendly, and we have spent many contented hours listening to "keeper talks" and visiting with staff and volunteers about the animals. There are so many animals that we see something new every time we go! Baby animals are some of our favorites, and the new gorilla habitat is amazing. More than once, weve spent half an hour hanging out with the goats in the childrens zoo or chatting with a volunteer about chimpanzees. Here are a few tips to make the most of your zoo visits: 1) If you go more than once a year, buy the membership. Its a good value and a way to give back a little to a wonderful place. Plus, you can just go and spend a couple of hours when you have a chance without feeling youve "wasted" the cost of a full-price admission. 2) Buy the refill cup. Especially on a hot day, you really cant beat $1 refills of lemonade or your favorite soda. 3) Unless you have very small (under 3yo) kids, please leave the giant wagon/stroller at home. The zoo has gotten measurably more crowded, and it really steals some of the fun to have to dodge the double stroller cavalry. Its the zoo, not DisneyWorld. Our little trouper has been walking it since he was two; yours can, too. If your 7yo is tired enough to climb back into the wagon, thats a good sign its time to call it a day. (See #1.) 4) If at all possible, go on a weekday and get there an hour early so you dont have to park half a zip code over. [NOTE TO ZOO DIRECTORS: You need a parking garage. Seriously.]

We are active Houston Zoo members and renew our membership every year "8 years running". We love this Zoo! They are always evolving and adding new attractions as well as animal exhibits, while keeping all of you typical favorite animals that have been there for years. The food is very good and the restaurant located at the African exhibit is fantastic and our favorite eating spot! Being that it is in Houston and summers a beyond belief miserably hot, they provide MANY cool down stations as well as a mini water park for the kids at the children s area, which is free might I add. During the Holidays, such as Halloween they do Zoo Boo, which everyone is encouraged to come dressed in Halloween costumes and they have a live DJ for the kids and do "monster parades" around their reflection pool to Halloween songs such as Thriller, Monster Mash, etc. During the Christmas season they do Zoo lights, where they go all out and decorate a VAST majority of the Zoo with Christmas lights and decorations. I highly recommend if you are in Houston to definitely check it out. My 1 negative, and this is important, is to MAKE SURE you get there No later than 10:30-10:45 am on the weekends as the parking lots get completely full quick! If you procrastinate and get there later, it is NOT uncommon to drive around for 30 minutes looking and waiting for a spot to open up.

We came a long way to visit the zoo and getting there we waited in line got our tickets and started the mile walk. Everything was so easy, accessible, and entertaining. We stopped at the Circle Cafe and ate pizza the kids had a great time watching the birds but they were ready to see the carousel. Upon entering there are signs as well as the booth next to the carousel that says the carousel was included with the dinosaur pass so I purchased an all day pass for me, my husband, and my two kids so they would be able to enjoy an all exclusive... BullS* my husband took the tickets and tried to get on with my 11 yr old and almost 2 yr old and they wouldnt let him get on so I called around to find out why and my husband was so embarrassed about the whole thing he made us leave! My crying children didnt understand why I Wouldnt Let them on the ride. My husband replied because she let them TRICK her into buying something we didnt need and doesnt work! Heartbroken I couldnt agree more. Why didnt the ticket vendor explain that the all day pass is NOT an everything pass just some things are included but to get the special deal you have buy the dino ticket separately THEN you can ride the carousel? One big unorganized mess! Not going back.
