Sundays afternoon performance of "The Lion in Winter" was a wonderful and exciting experience. At the beginning, the director (Eric Link) explained that he had chosen to emphasize the costumes and acting rather than the set; this was a very wise choice and at no time did the viewers fail to believe the black set to be a castle. The costumes were beautiful designed by Elizabeth Hayes. David Winton is an excellent actor and certainly understood the game being played in this battle of the wits. He is overpowering and, at times, the audience would be tempted to watch him act. This lessened the power of Eleanor (Deanna Glasser) who equals the king in power and wit. Glasser does a super job of realizing the emotion which Eleanor must have felt in this entanglement. The sons (Micah Buckley, Logan Dowlen and Evan Grabenstein) were delightful to watch because each was so aware of his position in the power play. Alais (Jolinda Beck) was equally effective in understanding her place in the family. Tristan Whitney, as King Phillip II of France, had the qualities for a prince but at times he needs to be more sure of himself to be a King. After all, hes not afraid of Henry or anyone else. An overall enjoyable afternoon in the theater.
