The parking situation is abysmal. We are tourists with no insider knowledge of Nashville and lets just say its a good thing we didnt mind the mile walk. Id estimate it took 45 minutes to find a place to park. There are generally two types of museums: those that tell a story and those that just house a bunch of stuff. The Tennessee State Museum has lots of stuff. The Andrew Jackson section leaves out essentially all the juicy details that make Andrew Jackson interesting and generally focuses on the same things a 3rd grade social studies class would. This sugar-coated and sanitized version of history is why I believe most people find history boring. The Civil War section was an improvement, but still glossed over. If museums of stuff are your thing make sure to plan ahead for parking and youll have a good time here.

I was very impressed with this free resource in Nashville and sorry I didnt have more time to explore. Nicely presented exhibitions without feeling overloaded with information. Some amazing artefacts. I loved the Mastodon fossils and dug out canoe in particular. A nice way to pass a couple of hours. I dont know whether there are any/ many interactive style exhibits for children/families so Im not sure how quickly they would get bored but its definitely good for adults. Friendly staff also.

Biased perspective of history that glorifes the Confederacy a large percentage of the time. There were some non-Confederate history but it was few and far between. While they glorified the Confederates, there was no attempt to balance the other side. Between the lack of Tennessee history not related to the Confederacy, the labyrinth like layout, and the failure of recognition of KKK as a terrorist group, this place sucks. Go here if you want a to have place to celebrate the "Old South " without other perspectives.

Really interesting exhibits with artifacts from area Native Americans and an extensive focus on the civil war. Includes short films and Q & A flash cards making it a great learning experience for children. However, I the entire multi-floor facility, only a SINGLE wall and maybe one portrait is dedicated to African American contributions. They discussed one middle class black family, a traveling band and a couple of women activists. Frankly, its quite disheartening if youre black but great otherwise!

I really thought it was updated for the modern age of 1985. Everything in here was hold. They need a remodeling asap. And some more interactive exhibits that would engage the museum goer more visually is in need. I dont want to press a button and watch a 10 minute picture show that I learn nothing from. They need to hire a visual arts programme director or something. Nonetheless I learned about Andrew Jackson and some battle long long ago.

Very nice museum, worth the stop, lot to learn here. I found it very difficult to flow through this museum. I did a lot of back tracking. Hopefully the new medium will flow much better. Speaking of new museum many artifacts were missing for the new location. Museum was free so cant complain too much but Im a visual person so the missing artifacts really stood out to me. Will return if in the area again to see the new museum.

Ive lived in Nashville for 8 years, and my first visit to the Tennessee State Museum was 3 days ago. My girlfriend and I enjoyed it. Theres almost too much to learn. Were planning on returning soon. The staff is very friendly, too. I just wish it was easier to navigate. We had a map, but it was difficult to find our way through all the twists and turns. Overall, it was a terrific afternoon!

A great place to spend a couple hours. The museum is completely free, and theres so much history to see. Its GREAT for anyone into American history. I was just traveling through Tennessee, not interested in its personal history at all, but it had so much great stuff about American history as a whole...and especially a lot about Andrew Jackson. Very glad we stopped here on our road trip.

Een bezoekje waard als je in de buurt bent, is gratis dus je kan niet missen. Bespreekt de hele historiek van de staat. We moesten onze rugzak afgeven (gratis opbergen).

Pretty awesome for a state museum. 2.5 floors with displays from paleo to modern era. Mostly geared toward school aged children, but my 8 year old thought the so-called "reading corner" was super lame, as it was just one shelf of kids books, and freezing cold. The quilt display was gorgeous, for women of all ages, and a nice break from all the war stuff.

It is totally free. Thats really great. Similar contents and less exhibit in Indianapoliss museum, but it still cost you $10 + something. So I really appreciate the deal of this state museum in Nashville. It has so many genuine items. Goo amount of education facts of local history. I was happy I went there spending whole morning.

The museum seemed tucked away and hidden away even though it was right by my hotel but I walked in. The staff were very friendly and gave me a map and told me how to navigate the museum. If youre a history buff like me, youll enjoy it as it focuses mostly on history. Really enjoyed the section about the native americans as well.

Great free museum. 3 levels with lots of stuff covering from the Native Americans forward. Spent 2 hours there and could probably have spent another hour but it was closing. Most impressive were the pre-contact Native American artifacts and the pioneers tools.

Always a good place to walk around and see the exhibits. Wear comfortable shoes because it is larger than you think! There is something for everyone: history, music, mystery, and interactive exhibits for the kids. Stop at the gift shop for a memory of the day.

Great place to learn about the history of Tennessee. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about Tennessee history, and they were able to answer most of my groups rather obscure questions. The artifacts on display enhance the stories that the museum tells.

The Tennessee State Museum has a lot of great exhibits spanning from the earliest humans in the state to modern times. There are 3 levels, and the exhibits are varied and interesting. Completely free and definitely worth a morning or afternoon stop.

Tennessee has some amazing history dating back to frontierland and native americana. Interactive exhibits really give a feel of what life was back then and is complimented well with more recent history over the last 200 years.

I really enjoyed this place. The amount of things your see and the knowledge you gain is spectacular. Well worth the visit. Admission is free. Gotta pay to park. But well worth the price to park. Parking is 2 dollars an hour

It is free to enter. Nice displays from native Indians till reconstruction. The gift shop has cute little trinkets that represent Nashvilles history. The staff was very helpful. Great place to visit while in Nashville.
