I admit I am not a huge train person, but my dad is, and a large portion of my upbringing has been dedicated to trains and train hunting. This is one of the nicest train museums I have been to. it is very large and the trains are well maintained. I liked how you could go inside many of them, I hope even more open up as restoration continues. I would love to go inside of dinner car. The gift shop is large and even has some food (premium jerky and granola bars). Inside the museum there is also a area in the back right corner with multiple picnic tables and vending machines (chips, jerky, teas, soda, water... took cash and card) where yo can get a drink and snack. A good thing to help prevent cranky hungry kids (including me lol). They also have a kids area with tons of toy trains for kids to play with, I suggest adults check out the area too as it also had adult displays to see (including a really cool large lego display, and more traditional displays and writings on the walls). The museum has a section of large glass windows that give a very nice view of the hills, farm land, and animals. Parking is free and you can walk directly across the street to the Strasburg railroad for a train ride when your done. There was also a guy selling novelty ice cream right out front when we went (cash only)

This museum is a great place to see and learn about trains. The first room beyond the lobby had a large model train layout. On the floor above the model trains were some historical items and train paintings. The main part of the museum is a huge enclosed garage-type building that has many, many train engines and cars, including diesel and steam. Each of the rolling stock has a board with information to read. Some of the engines have stairs pushed up to them so you can climb up and peer into the windows. Outside, visitors are welcome to walk freely around the yard, where more trains are located. Some of these trains arent in as good of condition as the indoor trains are, and some of them are in the process of being restored by the museum. Overall, visiting the museum was a great experience. Just make sure you dont go when its really hot outside - the indoor garage part of the museum was hot (I dont believe there was air conditioning) and there were a couple fans on the ceiling, but they were moving very slowly. Im imagining that the air could be very suffocating in severely hot weather. Also, at the time I went (May 2012), the Strasburg Railroad was offering combo tickets, which included a ride on the steam engine train and admission to the museum for a discounted price.

excellent place for kids. I took my son here at around 18 months and he loved it, took him again around a year later and he loved it again even more so. The museum is really spacious so it never really feels crowded and there are plenty of well thought-out exhibits to observe. I cant say enough about the kids section; it was really really well done. Plenty of spaced out things for all the kids to play with from thomas trains, actual trains, legos, interactive exhibits, etc etc.

Nice place. The kids loved it! Educational and fun. I went there for the first time this year. I went with my kids and one of my kids friends. They all loved it. My only problem were those little tinny hand trains for small kids. If you want to have your child ride them, it cost 5 bucks. I was thinking no more than a dollar to ride those tiny things! But I forked out the money because I promised she could. They are really only made for tots 5 years and under.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this museum. It was reasonably priced with good information about the railroad industry, past and even a little present. The staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Plus, the vast array of well preserved and / or restored locomotives and cars was breathtaking. Plus, they had areas for kids to shovel play coal and play with train-themed toys. Be sure to also ride the Strasburg Railroad across the road.

Nice historical place for older people... not really for kids unless their 10 and up... only thing that caught my 3 yr olds attention was the model trains (toy trains) inside the museum that he was able to play with, and there arent many of the kids trains though that are working... need to replace batteries or something. If you want to save $$$$ buy some Thomas the trains sets and play with your kid at home... pretty pricey.

My Father was one of the biggest railroad buffs there was. So going here of course reminds me of him. But the place is full of actual rolling stock from various ages of rail history. From steam engines to passenger cars and freight cars, this place has multiples of examples of all. It even has a mock up of a 1900s train staion inside. Its a great time for a train buff or all history buffs in general.

This is a must-see for any rail enthusiast. A great collection of nicely restored steam, electric and diesel engines, as well as many passenger and freight cars. Great hands exhibits for kids as well. Right across the street from the the Strasburg Railroad, where you can take a 45-minute ride on a steam-pulled train (included with admission to the museum). Lots of other things to see and do nearby.

Its a cool train museum with some great refurbished locomotives and rail cars you can even ride on old passenger cars pulled by a steam engine. Its enjoyable to see how well they bring them back to good condition. The downside of the place is that most of the displays you cant go in like you can in the MTA subway museum but thats a small thing its not a deal breaker

Great family place! Something for everyone: toys for kiddies like Legos, hands on for teens and adults. Steam engines, diesels, artifacts, restoration shop tours, guides, the whole works. They even have a few wheelchairs available. The Staff and Volunteers are knowledgeable, too. All in all, a great place to spend a few hours. We have a fun time every time we go!

A wonderful experience for train enthusiasts and curious passersby, alike. From old trains to new, from real life-sized trains to scale models and lego reproductions, the Strasburg museum has it all. Also, dont forget to stop across the road and take a ride on the Strasburg railroad. See the sights, hear the sounds, smell the smells. Its so worth the stop.

Bonito, aunque la persona que me atendió en los souvenirs hizo algunos comentarios fuera de lugar sobre los rusos y mexicanos... No sabía que soy uno jajaja

My 3 yr old loves trains. Overall both my boys loved it. Its awesome seeing the life sized trains in person. We spent just over 2 hours here. Dont miss the educational section, which is more hands on play if you have younger ones. I wish you were able to walk through more train cars. Definitely walk across the street and take the train ride.
