I may be limited by the fact that I didnt see any of the grounds due to skin cancer; if the highlight of the museum is its grounds, it should be a botanical garden or arboretum with a vast art collection. I make it a point to go to art museums whenever I travel. I honestly just love art, and I have found that people would be shocked at the kind of art that is hours from them in cities and states you wouldnt expect to find history in. I was disappointed. The history of the museum itself, and North Carolinas dedication to the preservation of art, made me so excited to explore. Despite having many curators, the entire museum is cohesive, and I dont personally think of that as a good thing. Muted colors, realism, human form in the three dimensional pieces. No photographs, I dont recall seeing any ink drawings or charcoal, or even watercolor. I was sort of embarrassed to be in the African section which is primarily 20th century. I know the museum is free. I would rather have paid $10 to get in and have that as a base charge, and that money be used to allow your curators more room for growth and variety. I will say that I think this museum is a beautiful place and would be wonderful for a field trip for young students as the collection isnt overwhelming in diversity and could be easily discussed and analyzed by young minds. So I may bring my children back one day. But I wont come back by myself.

NC Museum of Art is a great place to go for a day of fascination. Being that it is located right off of the Greenway you can make a day of it. Take a nice bike ride there and set up a picnic on the greens over looking interesting abstract sculptures that do more than look cool. You will have to go to find out what else these interactive pieces of art do. I wont spoil the surprise. From there take it inside to look at many of the exhibits that are forever changing. After walking around for a while you may feel up for a drink or a bite to eat at the cafe, which serves great food and bloody marries. Above is just a small taste of what the NC Museum of Art offers. The amphitheater offers many concerts and they have movies on the lawn. Events and exhibits are constantly changing so make sure to look it up before you go so that you do not miss out on any exhibits. You can enter part of the museum for free and they also have special exhibits that you pay for. I recommend going f you have nothing to do on a Saturday or when you have friends/family visiting Raleigh. It is the top that Raleigh has to offer.

Got young kids? Think you cant bring them to a museum of art because theyll be bored, get into things and the effort isnt worth it? Well, think again! The NC Museum of Art is a great venue for young children! Recently, I took my very active, easily distracted 4 year old son and he loved it. What first caught his attention, and mine, was the exterior of the building and its unique design. As this piqued both of our interests, we were more than excited to enter. While the historical artwork wasnt as interesting to my son, he thoroughly enjoyed the more modern pieces on the right hand side of the facility. As a side note, do enjoy the luxe bathroom facilities! Lastly, and most importantly, if youre bringing kids, dont forget their bikes, scooters etc. Take them around the outdoor paved pathways that feature outdoor artwork. Its an easy excursion and it extends your time out with the kids...its also great exercise with an inspiring view!

Beautiful artworks on display here from artists all over. I especially love their special exhibits. Ive been to two so far and plan on going to many more. The Rembrandt exhibit was spaced out well and organized, absolutely beautiful. Ive also gone to the Leonardo DaVinci Codex and the M.C. Escher exhibit (both showing at the same time). The codex was amazing, being able to see the scribbles and writing of DaVinci was a once in a lifetime experience. The M.C. Escher exhibit was much the same. Set up so youre basically walking through his evolution in art. From his early doodles and studies to his more well known art works. Absolutely incredible. The other exhibits are just as amazing. From statues, to renaissance paints, to modem art, the museum doesnt leave you wanting. Looking for something to do for the day? I definitely suggest going to the NC Museum of Art.

As a concert venue I was severely disappointed with NCMA. I went to see Jason Isbell and the 400 unit June 18th. They had over booked the venue to the point that there was no seating at all. My friends and I ended up at the top of a muddy and sharply sloped hill. There were even pregnant women trying to climb this precarious hill because there was no where to sit! They should be ashamed of themselves. I would think the museum of art would think about more than dollar signs. Do NOT go to a concert here!! You will be disappointed! They have lost my patronage and I will encourage everyone I know to go elsewhere.

Ive been here 4 times now. This museum is near many doctors offices, which is convenient for those of us traveling to appointments. There are free exhibits in one building and a building with exhibits you pay to see. Weve only seen the free exhibits, as we dont have much time to walk through the exhibits each time we go. They have an outstanding collection here, with many pieces from the 1300s and before. They have pieces from Italian, Dutch, Flemish, and a few other collections. Their contemporary collections are outstanding as well. They have many new pieces. Love this place!!

Superb, world class fine arts museum operated by the state. On this site since 1983, and featuring a LEEDS silver certified west building as the new home for the permanent collection. Come enjoy the collection, changing exhibitions (including the states collection of original Audubon books), dine at Iris or just get a snack at Iris Sip, or roam the museums 164 acre museum park (the largest in North America). Theres lots to do 7 days a week (though the museum buildings are closed on Monday), including Friday night evenings features drinks and live music in the west building.

I went for the free Ansel Adams and Venetian Renaissance exhibits. They were good. The overall atmosphere here was a little weird. Almost like someone hung a bunch of pictures/paintings on the wall of a conference center or hotel conference level and called it a museum. The displays and narratives were pretty good. I did not like how, at the end of the exhibit, you were herded through the gift shop. Reminded me of the duty free shops some airports make you literally walk through to get to the exit.

Its an art museum. But while we were there one of the people that worked there told us about special events that take place there every Friday evening. Music and dancing under the dancing tree. One of the main permanent exhibits is made up of many butterflies. It is often overlooked by guests, but the butterflies slowly open and close their wings. There are images on some of their wings. To me, the shape they form and the images represent some of NCs heritage as well as NCSU.
