We live in a small townhouse in Raleigh. Even though our golden retriever always looks like shes smiling, we figured we should get her some fresh air, so we took her to the dog park on Millbrook. At first it was a great experience. She ran around the park, catching frisbees, wrestling with other dogs, the whole time smiling even more than usual. We overheard some nearby people speaking English and struck up conversation, feeling that the park was a safe place and we could take our eyes off of our girl for a few minutes (shes 2 years old, which is like 22 in dog years, so she knows how to watch after herself). After a few minutes of pretending to care about dogs and sports, I turned away from our conversation to check on our puppy. To my horror, she was being humped by some dog about the quarter of the size of her. Sure, the dog couldnt really reach the parts of her that he wanted to, but from one look I could tell that Princess Pennington was frozen in terror and didnt know what to do. I ran over to drop kick the toy dog, but its owner showed up with a chuckle and some throwaway apology. I told the owner that doggie venereal diseases were a very real problem and that his hate-crime mutt seemed like the type that got around. I gathered up my belongings and left the park with Penny. She spent the rest of that day and night in the shower and hasnt been the same since. In summary, just because we live in Raleigh doesnt mean that your dog cant get raped at the park. Stay vigilant if you go to Millbrook Exchange. to nam: Perhaps you should look into some training courses for your dog. My dog is trained to never show her teeth, growl or bite even if shes being humped by a rat-dog in public. Shes a very proud retriever, and would rather stoically bear the torture than show any such display of weakness. Also she eats at the dinner table with us- you probably make your dog eat on the floor (yuck). Theres likely a whole world of civilized dog activities that you know nothing about because you expect them to "just be dogs" and "act on instinct." Has your dog ever pulled out the chair for you at a restaurant? Im guessing not, probably because you dont respect your dog. You probably dont even know her middle name (Pennys is Edith). In short yes I can expect dogs to be treated like humans in that they deserve dignity and respect, and not to be sexually assaulted at local parks. Maybe you need to gain some perspective before writing silly reviews.

Im writing this review for the dog park. The actual dog park is very nice. There is a section for large dogs and a section for small dogs. This was my first time visiting and my dog is medium size and quite energetic so I elected to go to the large dog section. My dog was loves other dogs and once released she ran towards the center of the park. The park was already being visited by approximately 20 other dogs and their owners. The owners seemed to know one another as they were all sitting together talking and not watching their dogs - at all. Very quickly 4 - 5 very large dogs began asserting their dominance over my 25lb dog. The behavior included the first dog chasing then holding my dog to the ground by grabbng my dog around the throat and holding it to the ground while two other dogs sat or laid on top of her. She was yelping and squeeling for help. I yelled to the "pack" of owners asking the owners of the dominant dogs to help me, no one moved. My sister, who was with me, also yelled for help. One of the owners yelled back, "its what dogs do." I went ahead and wrestled my dog loose only for her to be chased down again by the same dogs with her yelping and squeezing each time. Dogs will be dogs...thats not my issue. I am so extremely disappointed in the dog owners that frequent this park. No one was watching their dogs. They were all to busy huddled together talking...men and women. Once we left the large dog section of the dog park, we went to the small dog section and I sat and witnessed very dominant dogs ruling the large dog section without owner intervention. I witnessed dogs pooping without owners watching or cleaning up after their dogs. Who ever this "pack" of owners are, they should be ashamed. If you take your dog to a dog park it is your responsibility to watch your dog every moment. Dogs are animals, things can happen. Be a responsible owner or dont use the park. I certainly wont be back.

I have 2 smaller dogs that get along just fine with most dogs. We ALWAYS go to the small dog side because I realize that because of their size they shouldnt be playing with larger dogs that could hurt them unintentionally. We have been going there on and off for about a year and a half. Today however we had the worst experience and will not be going back. Both of my dogs were ganged up on by 2 other dogs that were slightly larger than them. I know dogs like to play, but when you see your dog pinning another dog down in the dirt you should reprimand them. I picked up both of my dogs on separate occasions to try to diffuse the situation, but it would just start again when I put them down. Finally, the last straw was when one of the dogs started DRAGGING my dog around by his ear and the owner (still not sure whos it was) said NOTHING!!! The 10 or 15 people who were there were all sitting around in a circle talking and NOT WATCHING THEIR DOGS!!! I swatted at the other dog since it was dragging mine and then picked mine up. Someone had the nerve to yell at me for protecting my dog. So if you love you dogs and want them to have a safe place to play, dont bring them here. Try the Cary dog park. Sure you have to pay but it is worth it to know that the people who are there must have shot records on their dogs and get a pass from the city.

As a park I would give it 4 stars. It is clean, has wonderful swimming pools, tennis courts galore and has great activities going all the time. I would give it 5 stars if it was located in a wooded area with hiking trials. The two stars are for the Dog park only. We are new to Raleigh and have tried to find a good dog park. Good luck We have gone to Millbrook several times since moving here because it is has two parks for dogs. Large and small. Unfortunately it is just a large area of dirt covered with wood chips. There is no grass areas at all. Sure there are trees for shade but your dog will get very dirty, specifically after it has rained. We have found few good pet people in this park. Many owners in the large park do not watch their dogs, clean up after their dogs and do not care how aggressive their dogs act and refuse to restrain their dog. After 10 or more attempts to justify going to Millbrook, we will no longer go back. Not only because cleaning the dog after every visit but the rude behavior and lack of personal responsibility from the owners is shameful. Recommend - Find somewhere more friendly and clean with green space for your dog. If you want to swim, play tennis or join any number of activities? Millbrook is a good place.
