I wish I could give it 0 stars. There were 3 floors of "exhibits" and a poorly filmed movie below ground floor. (There will be more in future, Im guessing because there are 8 floors). All floors have only one artist, so if the artist either isnt good or isnt your cup of tea, that floor is worthless. When I went, there were 2 floors of neo expressionist art. (one was mainly eyeballs and penises...also a lovely piece that looked like a 3rd grader drew a person defecating.) Another was what I assume was the artists commentary of the worlds lack of individuality and angst toward large stores (this particular one Costco). I just disagree entirely with its premise and the lack of knowledge of economics, so this floor was another bust. One floor actually had art. I was surprised. There was some detail in the faces that the artist took the time to depict some raw emotion. Of course, this was the smallest floor and other than the faces there was no other detail work. In short, it is not a museum worth going to... And its more of a collection of individuals art rather than an actual museum. Do research before you go, or go on a day when apparently the price is objective, and make sure youre a fan of one of the possible four artists they display.

The New Museum always has some interesting exhibits going on. After years of passing by this place I only now realized that they offer a free night once a week. I was there for the Carsten Holler Experience exhibit and it was interesting. After seeing all the ads on the subway about the slide. I took the plunge.... If you heard something yelling a bunch of profanity... That was me. It was quick slide down and it was actually intense. It gets dark at some points and your not sure which way your going. Since the the exhibits change every month or so. Its hard to review this place by just basing it on the actual location. What can I say? Its a really cool building, very modern and clean? Thats about it. Its definitely a museum that I wouldnt pay to get in to. Its kinda small compared to other museums in NYC. *************FREE on Thursdays between 7-9PM. ********** Do come early cause the line does get LONG!

This museum was a huge disappointment. I will never ever doubt yelp again. From first impressions, I assumed that this would be the best museum and that I found the best secret gem in the city. Not only did we have to pay $10 each, there was only-- if you really think about it -- three real floors. Most of the museum is made up of half floors, it was more like those one gallery places of Chelsea. For now, the exhibition was 1993. The entire museum was situated as a time capsule of some sorts...Although it was pretty interesting to see how 1993 was, I really didnt feel anything after leaving the place. I really only liked the rooftop, and Hey, New Museum thats cheating. You cant have your only best artwork be the city landscape! Maybe if they showed other pieces of art here, I MIGHT come back...but its too small! Even Chelseas free galleries has more art than that. Get to it, New Museum.

Its important to approach art with an open mind and be prepared to learn, not just to enjoy. That said, the "art" featured at this "museum" is of disgracefully low quality, both aesthetically and intellectually. It manages, against all odds, to say almost nothing, and to say it poorly. Add to this the fact that the space itself is awkwardly designed (the lobby is a special kind of disaster - I watched people walk in circles trying to figure out where to go), and I can say with some confidence that this museum is better left off the map. If you want to see excellent contemporary art, just visit the galleries in Chelsea or Williamsburg. If you want to see great modern art, hit up the Whitney or the Guggenheim - or, for that matter, the Met. The New Museum is in dire need of a remodel and a new mission.

Ive never given art museums a one star rating because arts can be very subjective. However, Im giving New Musuem one star for its visitor experience. I went there on a Thursday evening (pay as you wish) and the musuem was over its capacity. I waited for an hour to get in but only stayed for 15 minutes because the space was too crowded and loud. The elevator took forever so I took the stairs which was narrow and filled with people. There was a queue for each of the "video booths" on the second floor so I only got to see one. Overall, it wasnt an enjoyable experience (Moma PS1 is better in my opinion) Even with a $2 donation, it wasnt worthy of the time and money. The exhibition content is not my favorite, but thats a different story.

I have a nice respect for the New Museum and what it is trying to accomplish. Its a great space and has a fantastic, constantly rotating set of works on display. Ground level youll find a cafe and gift shop as well as one large exhibition room. The building is comprised of over 7 floors of exhibitions in a building that in itself is a work of art. Make sure you get a chance to go up to the top floor and take a waltz on the observation deck, great views of the city and a great photo opportunity. The fun doesnt really stop there, if you are generous enough to become a member, they have some great events and parties to take advantage of. The Halloween party has always been one of the best times Ive had at a museum in a long time.

This might be considered art because it did affect my emotions but here is how my emotions were affected; 1. I found it disturbing that so many people consider this as real art. It was junk art at best. 2. I felt annoyed by the security guards yelling at everyone for getting to close to the junk....I mean art. 3. I found it draining that I paid $12 to look at crap. 4. I found it revolting that so many resources have been wasted to house piles of garbage. 5. I found it entertaining that the piles of garbage in my garage would be considered art by some people if it were placed in a big white room. If you want to see real art, try the Museum of Modern Art or the MET. Please dont support this group of tasteless snobs.

I am a lover of modern art, and I am definitely liberal and open minded in my tastes, and I am an artist myself - but I was beyond bored during my visit months ago. I actually only ended up staying there about 45 minutes, which was generous because I was fighting the urge to leave after 15 minutes. The show (the title I dont remember) seemed pointless because the only reason the art seemed connected in any way was because it was all equally terrible, except for maybe one piece. If you are some obnoxious uber-cool hipster type who likes crap for the sake of being ironic you may like it. I also hate the architecture of the museum - seems very awkward somehow. What a let-down.
