When I first moved to Reno (2001), I didnt know the town well, and at first glance it seemed like it had some fun stuff, but was pretty much just another small city. Early on I was lucky and was introduced to some people that knew the town well and where all the little hidden gems were at, and I fell in love with the town quickly thereafter. A lot of those hidden gems of Reno are in the Riverwalk District and specifically along the riverwalk itself. Dozens of restaurants, bars, nightlife locations, entertainment venues, parks, and all kinds of other stuff all located just off the main strip (Virginia St), and all in fairly close proximity. One of my favorite things to do during the summer is go down to the river with some friends, float from Mayberry down to downtown, get out at Arlington, and then head up top for a drink and some food. A great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday. Beyond the obvious playing in the river - which is very family friendly with rollout shallow areas and tons of space on the rocks and seating areas - there area number of parks along the river, and almost all of them are easily accessible along the riverwalk that goes from downtown to the west along the river with bike and walking paths available. If you havent fallen in love with Reno yet, head down to the river on your day off, play in the water a bit, have a good beer and some grub, go check out an art gallery or book store, watch a show, play in the park, and learn why this is actually a really great town.

Fun to walk along the river. Some great restaurants, shops and a full service movie theater. Interesting people watching location. During the summer locals like to tube down the river.
