Living in this area in the 90s we had visited this plantation home 8 to 10 times taking family and friends on the tour. Yesterday we took 5 of our grands and daughter on the tour. At 20 a person I was ready for the teens to hear of the history that came with this home. Having been here so many times I could recall a lot of this history but many important parts were told to our group. Some of the other guest ask questions that our our agent did not know. After a few questions she seemed upset that those things were being asked. She passed over many things that had been told in the past visits. She never told of the famous painting the in the ball room of the eyes that followed you. Later when asked about it she said "oh I only tell that if small children are present they seem to like that." The music room was an in and how and never telling of how the children of this home had music lessons six months of the year with the teacher living in the home during this time. How important music lessons were to the family. She passed very fast on how the girls at the run of their floor since the boys lived in another outside wing. We had been told before that the girls had their own floor and Mr. Randolph overseeing their safety. She never told the deep history of this...We only saw one bedroom since they now rent so many of the rooms for a stay over. She never told of the bed warmers used during this time period. She never told of the history of furniture being transported on ships/barges from New Orleans and how the Mrs.Randolph had the Ceiling Medallion brought in or some of the other things from Paris. She briefly touched on the the kitchens were outside from the main house but did not explain why...There were people in our group from all over the United States -- I was the only person in the group that had ever been to the plantation. She never told of the that the women would sit by the fireplaces with a mask so their makeup would not melt. She missed so much history that could and should have been told. Even one of the couples made a comment that she did not seem very knowledgeable about the history. They had visited other homes and said the history was brought more to life. She also passed over a lot of the history from the civil war and the home being saved. Again, just a brief talk on this. The tour was to start at noon but we really did not started until about 12:15 and it was finished 12:53 out back where she pointed out the boys rooms were downstairs and we could go down and look at them. The tour ended with her glad to take tips. Not the history told that I had so looked forward to take my history loving grands to after all the years I had enjoyed taking others there. I would not return nor would I tell others to tour this plantation....there are too many others in the area.

Unforgettable experience! If you love learning about southern history & antiques and have always wanted to stay in a real antebellum plantation this is a great place to visit. We stayed in the Cornelia Randolph room #1. It was decorated and furnished in period antiques and with an old full tester bed. When we were there, there wasnt much going on, it was very quiet and kind of like we had the whole place to ourselves and had full run of the house. We had a great time exploring all the rooms and grounds. We took the tour (free with our room stay) which was interesting and educational. We had dinner in the restaurant downstairs which was wonderful, my husband said the steak he ordered was the best hes ever had. Everything around the place was old or reproductions and very authentic feeling, not like the overdone sterile feeling of some of the other restored plantations in the area. The only problems we had were the shower in our room (a converted clawfoot tub) had very low water pressure and the tub itself was very chipped and worn so it didnt seem sanitary enough for me to want to sit in it to take a bath. It got the job done, but it took a long time to get the soap off, kind of like trying to take a shower in one of those RV bathrooms. Also We didnt get a good nights sleep because we are both tall/larger people and we were trying to squeeze into a full size bed that is probably best for just one person. So if you need a good "hotel" experience, maybe rent one of the cabins instead that have king sized beds and more modern plumbing. But if those things dont matter much to you, definitely rent a room inside the main house! The discomfort is totally worth it.

My wife and I returned to Nottoway on our 17th anniversary because 18 years before it had been a magical place; a place where we fell in love not only with each other, but with the property itself. Although the passage of time has added modern conveniences, the overall experience was horrible. I booked the room that I thought we had the first time we went, since it was the only one listed on the third floor overlooking the river.I was even willing to pay the premium price since after all, it WAS magical. My magical room with the balcony where we had sipped champagne and watched the river boats go by 18 years earlier was now a sitting room. Our room this time was much smaller, and in the addition of the main house; it overlooked the the fountain and wedding area: where a really bad wedding band was playing loudly till 11;00 pm. We were finally able to fall asleep around midnight but every hour or so the train,which may as well have been been passing through our room, blared its horn. Although checkout is at 11:00 am, the loud tour guides begin at 9:00 am. I guess it is just as well since the guys with the chainsaws started trimming trees on the property at 8:00 am. What had been a charming, quiet, historic, B&B in the country where you were lulled to sleep by the sounds of crickets and frogs, and peacocks roamed the grounds, is now a well known tourist trap where the lights and noise never turn off.Thank you Nottoway, you have soured my memories and you will NEVER get another penny from me nor anyone I know, as I will be telling everyone I know.

Extremely rude and unaccommodating. I called on Monday and made a reservation for Mothers Day,Sunday at 1 pm. I called on Wednesday to ask if I could change my reservation from 1 pm to 11 am. I was told that I did not have a reservation and that the only time that I could come in would be 3 pm. There was no remorse or accommodation for having "lost " my reservation at 1 pm on Sunday. I was told that if I came in early at 2 pm that I could be seated and eat earlier than three. I just called today to make sure that we would be accommodated at 2 and was told that no, you could not be seated before your reservation- contradicting what i was told the day before. I asked to speak to the manager- ( did not get name but man with a foreign accent ). After I introduced myself in a pleasant tone and was in the middle of telling my story of all of the confusion that I had been going through, he cut me off and yelled to me asking if i just wanted to make a reservation or not. He had no interest in listening to what I had to say or to try and make the situation right. After he yelled, I responded to forget about it and that I will just write a review on yelp on my experience. He replied " so now you are threatening me." I hung up after that, because I refuse to be treated or yelled at in that way. I have never experienced " customer service " like this in my life. I have never gotten the run around or have been talked to like that just to make a reservation and PAY YOU TO EAT AT YOUR RESTAURANT!!!! horrible horrible. please dont support a business like this.
