I went 4-25-17. It was dull. We paid for the train ride and carousel unlimited rides and when we arrived. The train wasnt even running. Should have been posted before we bought the tickets. Most of the animals werent even out in their habitats. I went two years ago in April 2015 and they had a bunch of animals out right as soon as it opened. Now it just seemed like it has turned into a gym because most people there was just exercising and walking around. I love ❤️ Louisville. But this was a major let down. My birthday was 4-24 and my parents took me for my birthday. I also think that it should be posted when Children are on a field-trip to the Zoo. There was nothing but screaming kids and some where even getting lost or running off from their school. It was chaotic. That should have been posted on the site before we bought our tickets. We went thinking it was going to be a quiet relaxing day and see some wild life. The children was the wild life. Not at all peaceful and even though I know its not going to be completely empty, a warning would have been nice to have. A notice outside or online. I thought those children would have been at school. Perfect day and time to visit the Zoo. Not at all. Hectic and Chaotic.

I visited this zoo last week with my wife and kids as part of our family road trip. I would imagine that my experience might differ since we visited so late in the fall, from those of the summer. In the summer, I could see this zoo being a 4 star, no problem. There are a lot of food options and a lot of nice animal habitats. The problem of course being since it was late in the season, many of these food options were close, and a number of animals were off exhibit. One that sticks out in my mind is the polar bears. They have a really nice polar bear exhibit with several enclosures, but non had any polar bears in them. So you wander from enclosure to enclosure looking for something that isnt there. Depending on what zoo you are a member of, you can get a 50% discount. This discount is off the regular admission and wont work towards the safari pass (the website isnt clear about this). For us, it was still much cheaper to buy train tickets for all of us and get the discount, than it was to pay full price for the safari pass. The train is really high quality, and goes around the whole zoo, but it goes really slow, so I wouldnt want to ride it more than once anyway. Overall it was a good experience.

Let me say that I love the zoo, and have been going multiple times a year since I was a baby. Its one of my favorite places to be. Like many modern zoos, animals are not caged, but rather live in enclosures built to resemble their natural habitats. The staff and docents are knowledgeable about the animals, and the variety of species is impressive. Theres also a carousel, a motion simulator ride, a small splash park, and other temporary playplaces throughout the zoo. I must warn you, though, that if you visit the zoo in the off season (early spring or late fall), there are several inconveniences to frustrate you. Many of the restrooms throughout the zoo are closed, as are most of the refreshment stands. In fact, the only place you can buy food or drink (besides vending machines) on some days is the African Outpost restaurant, which is near the beginning of the zoo.If you need refreshment, or need to use the restroom, you are out of luck. In addition, I believe the selection of food during the off seasons is considerably smaller. Most patrons visiting the zoo are going to have a great time. Just remember to pack snacks if youre going to be there in the off-season!

I was very excited about taking my littles to the zoo for the first time. Unbeknownst to us, we went at the EXACT worst time of the day. As we made our way through the exhibits, we came across the bird show. We couldnt see it though because despite the seats being mostly empty, they dont let anyone in to sit (even between acts). And of course anywhere to see from around the edge was already taken. As we continued our journey through, we finally got to the much anticipated splash park and it was a very hot day. We got there just in time for them to close it right in the middle of the day for 90 minutes. Sorry kids, you cant do that either. A lot of exhibits were closed as we went through, many without signs stating they were closed, so we would stare for minutes before realizing nothing was there. I have been to several zoos, and I was very disappointed with the way this zoo was run. My fault for reading all of the locals reviews. Being from out of the area is not a good idea if you want to experience the "full potential " of this zoo. The employees and the schedule they have created there make it too complicated to just enjoy.

THE GOOD REVIEWS ARE LIES!! Probably business staff. If you look at the honest 1star reviews they all seem like the same experiences. This is ABSOLUTELY the worse zoo Ive ever been to, and I have been to several. The advertising is misleading. NO SAFARI RIDE, just the average train ride where you dont see many animals. Polar bear??? Where? Nope not there! They had ONE to two of MAJORITY of their animals and they all seemed heavily sedated. THIS IS A ZOO? WHERE ARE THE DAMN ANIMALS???? And why do the few you have look like they went of a HEROINE BINGE?? These animals looked sickly and under chemical restraints. Walking through the kangaroo path with no barriers was cool, but hell the kangaroos laid to the side as if they just took a hit of weed, looking at us as if we were the animals. I am serious. The worse zoo I have ever been to. And most of their attractions are embellished or flat out lies. LOUISVILLE RESIDENTS, YOU MUST DONT KNOW ANY BETTER, IF YOU THINK THIS IS A GOOD ZOO. THIS WAS LIKE WALKING THROUGH A HOOD FULL OF HIGH ANIMALS, SO SEDATED IT WAS HELLA BORING. I suggest you travel and see what you are missing!!!!

To get the best value out of the Louisville zoo, really depends on what you want from it. I thoroughly enjoy the zoo with my family as members. Less than $100, for a family of four, gives us access for a whole calendar year, with very few closed days. The Louisville zoo does not hold up to the Cincinnati zoo in terms of number of exhibits, but it works really well with what it has. There are regular trainings held with several of the animals, and frequently "Zoo Ambassador" animals are out in the public areas, where staff are there to educate any one who cares to learn about the animals. One thing that I love about the Louisville Zoo, that in my mind puts it above many other zoos, is the terrain. It is built into a large hill. This may not be a draw for one time visitors, who just want a leisurely stroll, but as a regular visitor, I greatly value a place where Im surrounded by beautiful landscaping and exotic animals, and I get the chance to get a little exercise in for myself, and my children. Also, there is a tram service for those that desire a ride instead of a walk.
