Like any community theatre there will be some ups and downs, but thats part of the fun of the experience -- along with cheap ticket prices. At TWS there are moments when youre blown away by unexpected talent that seemingly comes out of nowhere. Thats true generally and is particularly on display in the TWS childrens theatre and high school repertory company. The high school kids, in particular, are extremely talented, and at TWS they get to perform material that is far more cutting edge than what most high school theatre departments would ever venture to produce -- theyve done Mamet and just finished a run of RENT -- and many, many of them go on to professional theatre and music careers. If youre looking for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, buy a plane ticket. If youre looking for top flight community theatre and some very pleasant surprises, check out TWS. Oh, and dont be discouraged by people who create the impression its "impossible" to be cast at TWS. If youve got talent -- or are willing to work to develop your talent -- you will be used. And while you do have to be a season ticket holder to be eligible for casting, the season ticket price is cheap as dirt. Other than that all you need to do is go through "Studio," an enjoyable -- and free -- two-week acting boot camp taught by the theatres Artistic Director, Rick Snyder of Steppenwolf fame.

If you want to be an actor at this theater, you must take their Studio Classes. That requires you to buy season tickets. You will not ever be considered in casting unless you pay the high price for season tickets every year and volunteering is a must. If you do volunteer and want to see the show, you still have to pay for your high priced ticket. Anywhere else that you volunteer usually recognizes the hard work and lets you see the shows for free. The shows are mediocre anyway, as they cast the same people over and over. Not only that, the prices are too high for community theater. I will no longer support this theater as they just want all actors to shell out money for season tickets and hard work volunteering. Only expect to see the same people year after year.

The Chicago Tribune didnt call TWS "The Gem of the Western Suburbs" for nothing. Its a theatre with a good deal of talent and a great facility, with two perforamnce venues. Ticket prices are very reasonable, (less than 15 bucks with a subscription) and theres lots of free parking. There are 12 shows each year plus workshops, guest speakers from Chicagos theatre community, and lots more. September 2013 marks the 500th show at TWS, so the place definately has "legs." The childrens theatre program is one of the best in the Midwest -- Im constantly amazed at what these kids can do.

Been going to TWS for over 30 years. We also see a good bit of professional theatre in Chicago, on and off Broadway, and when visiting other cities. There have been a few stinkers, more than a few 5 star raves and many many enjoyable, inexpensive, close-to-home, theatre experiences. These are not high budget productions with household-named actors. Yet over and over we have come out saying, "That was really good. Im glad I came." Stripped down productions in the black box Cattell Wing have offered some of our favorite works. Certainly worth a try...or a second look.

Great theater in the burbs without the hassle of downtown traffic & parking. Top notch performances, especially considering they are not professional actors. The sets are amazing and the theater itself is better than a lot of professional spaces in Chicago. They have two stages; a full sized auditorium with over 300 seats and a smaller more intimate area with seating on three sides. Many local eateries offer discounts when attending the theater. Makes for a great date night.

Best kept secret in entertainment value in the suburbs. Professional quality theater company in its 85th year. Highly entertaining. Catch a live show without the hassle and expense of a trip downtown. Tickets available for any show for as little as $18 or for 7 play season at about $100.

Great shows for adults as well as a good season for kids and families. Wide variety of classes offered through their childrens theatre program and plenty of opportunities for adult education, too. A great asset in the Western Suburbs for sure!
