I love historical tours, and this one was pretty good. I got the hidden spaces tour that allows you to take photos for your own use (though they make you sign a waiver if you intend to do that). The hidden spaces tour takes you to all three floors and the guide is really knowledgeable about Wright (architect) and Robie (owner) and what they wanted this house to be as far it was a work of art as well as a home. I am not sure what the standard tour includes, but I figured that I would probably only go tour this house once in my lifetime, so why not splurge for the hidden spaces tour ($55). After all, it goes to a good cause of preserving the building which, believe it or not, is kind of in bad shape in some places and needs some work. If you live in Chicago and you have not checked out this master piece of architecture, you are really missing out on an easy and awesome experience. When you are done you can check out the beautiful University of Chicago campus and some of the local eateries.

Notable? ...as described above? No, this is a cultural monument and one of the most important examples of 20th Century architecture in the world. Among more than 500 built works by Frank Lloyd Wright only a few can be considered more important than this great house. The Robie house is a masterful expression of Wrights mature Prairie Style. Still under construction when Wright departed Chicago for Berlin, it is both symbolically and literally the culmination of Wrights Oak Park practice. The house is a masterpiece of site planning and here, Wright may have created the first attached garage built into the main body of a house, anticipating a trend that would later become standard practice in the US as he often did. The house narrowly escaped destruction in the 1950s and is today entrusted to the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.

The goal and effort is worthy and first class. The guides are enthusiastic if necessarily at the basic level of information in the public tours. There are, however, three caveats: 1. There remains a lot of restoration work necessary. 2. They are selling FLWright as the "great man of architecture," ignoring all the other architects involved in the Arts and Craft movement and the many artisans involved in building the Robie House. 3. The most disappointing moment was, however, when the guide described the 8000 square foot house with live in servants as "middle class," which qualifies as a major stretch. Still, if you like Prairie Style homes, its a must see.

I went on a Chicago Architecture Foundation tour. The Robie House docent was great! I learned so much about this beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright house, which was way ahead of its time. FLW wasnt the easiest person to work with and it was a demanding place to live in. There were many architectural elements that appealed to me. I wish I could have taken pictures inside, but that wasnt allowed. I will remember the beauty of this house by the exterior photos I was able to take. I recommend touring Robie House for anyone who has an interest in Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie Style.

De las mejores casas que diseño Wright, increible el diseño, los detalles, los vitrales, los materiales, los espacios continuos, la horizontalidad de la obra rompiendo con la tradición de esa época. Un clásico de la arquitectura moderna

House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright They talk about the history, Wrights design principles, and show you around the house (unoccupied). 1 hour tour, departing about every half hour ($17 + $5 if you want to take photographs) They hold your backpacks for you during the tour for free (locked cabinet for the entire group) Knowledgeable and friendly guides Its was being renovated (as of summer 2015), but it looked pretty good still.

The restoration work continues in this wonderful piece of architectural history. The regular tour now takes you to the upper floor (bedrooms and baths). The behind-the-scenes tour now simply takes you through the servantss quarters. The Plein Air Cafe next door is a great place to get lunch, coffee, tea… And if the weather is nice, the University of Chicago campus makes for a beautiful walk.

The finest example of the Prairie architectural style in Chicago. I highly recommend taking the tour. Its lead by volunteers and it gives you a peek into the house, its beautiful rooms and windows and the story of its inhabitants. However, after paying 17 dollars for the visit I think charging 5 extra dollars for a photography permit inside the house is a bit too much.

Beware the self-guided tour. I have a couple of degrees in Architecture, so I do not feel the need for a docent, BUT they do not let you tour the whole house on the self-guided tour...their web site DOES NOT TELL YOU THIS....and their superior attitude spoils even the 4 rooms you get to see. I will never give another dime to the FLW preservation trust.

Great tour which now includes the 3rd floor. Easy to get to from downtown via Metra (Electric District line from Millennium Station to 55-56-57 St Station). Arrive early to the neighborhood to see University of Chicagos Rockefeller Chapel and grab a bite to eat at Plein Air Cafe right next door to the house.

Prairie-style of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was his desire to create a style of dwelling that was affordable and functional for the average American family. The Oak Park neighborhood of Chicago is a must see for its architectural uniqueness. Much of the furnishings were designed by Mr. Wright.

Lifelong dream come true! It was fantastic to tour this historic and game changing building. We did the private places tour, it was more money and first thing in the morning, but so worth it. We had the house to ourselves, well worth it. If youre on the fence just do it, you only live once!

If you like Frank Lloyd Wrights architecture then you will love the tour of this place. The guides were very knowledgeable and spoke other languages if necessary. The restoration process is still ongoing but a lot of it is done. The gift shop had good FLW trinkets and books.

Great visit and nice guided tour. Maybe the Wright Praire Masterpiece? The Robie family history and the architecture details that are being restored. A Must in Chicago! (Go to see the dinning table at the free-adm museum of the Chicago University, just 5min from Robie)

The Frederick C. Robie House or just "Robie House" as it is known, is a National Landmark at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. It is viewed as Frank Lloyd Wrights best Prairie School design. Dont miss the Robie House near the Museum of Science and Industry.

The importance of FLWs influence on architect cannot be over emphasized. All modern architecture draws from his genius. Robie house is an icon of modern American architecture. Fabulous experience but very little to none of original furniture in the house

Obviously an iconic and worth visiting. But for those who have to choose between this house and the FLW home and studio, I think the latter is easily the better choice: things are much better preserved and the host is filled with furniture.
