My wife and I stopped in the Davenport house on our first trip to Savannah. The outside of the house is beautiful and fits in perfectly with the neighborhood. The inside, however, is one of the best example of bad taste Ive ever seen in a historic home. I must qualify that statement by making it absolutely clear that the horrid wallpapers and designs inside the Davenport House were the selections of its original owner and not of the museum staff! Thats what makes this such a unique experience. The original owner was a master builder and not an interior decorator and it shows. In the original construction he used faux-everything to keep costs down, because he was of the standard middle class of the time. The tour guide was knowledgeable about the current research on the house, and noted the gawdy wallpaper selections. During the restoration they matched the wallpaper to wallpaper that did exist in the house at the time. Instead of panning the house for this, I think it gives it an interesting character and should be celebrated. The only reason I wouldnt give this four stars is that there still is some restoration work that needs to be done, chiefly in the basement. The tour guide did mention that this restoration is in their plans. Currently the basement houses the entrance, gift shop and offices; and the historic function of that area is lost. Still, if youre looking for an interesting house tour I would recommend the Davenport house.

Beautiful outside. Nothing from the original owners was available (I think sold back in the day or something), so basically everything in the house is what the mgmt "thinks" would have been there based on the Davenports social status and the time period. Tour guy was bland and uninteresting and overall they were strict and blocked off everything from interaction (like looking at zoo animals from afar) as opposed to Harper Fowlkes who let you interact with things. Would not do this again.

Great house to take a tour in as the owner of the home was a master builder and so its impressive to see his meticulous craftsmanship throughout the house. The people that own this museum have worked hard to restore it to look as it did during its hay day. Loved learning about the family and the renovation efforts. Also, finger vases are a very cool thing

We toured with a large group, almost too large but Lynn our tour guide made sure we all were included, informed and enjoyed ourselves. She was great and the museum is amazing. So happy they are preserving Savannahs heritage. If youre interested in really learning what the heart of history is dont miss the Davenport House.

This was a great tour and well woth the stop. John did an amazing job for the walking historical experience through the house and really gave us all an excellent look inside what life was like in Savannah 200+ years ago. I highly recommend it and we found a Groupon2people for $9 total. Find a meter on the streat to park.

Admission gets you a close-up guided tour of a well preserved and restored 19th century upper-middle class home. The tour was informative and gives you a sense of daily home life from that period.

Went for the "tea" and it was a very enjoyable history nerd dinner theater. The house itself is very beautiful and the docent was very knowledgeable. More time for questions next time!!

The Davenport never fails to impress. This is the house museum I always make sure to tell out of town friends to see. I am super excited to hear they plan a kitchen restoration.
