You do not see turtles laying eggs on the beach - despite what the woman at reservations tells you. I specifically asked about seeing the turtles on the beach during the walk. The turtles come on the beach after midnight and their presentation starts at 7:30pm. My entire family was excited about doing this to see the turtles, which I specifically asked about when making the reservation. The day of, the first thing the presenter says you rarely see turtles. The presentation is nice, but basic. A Museum volunteer saw how upset we were because the misinformation we were given, she also stated other people are told the same thing. Dont waste your time or money. I think turtle preservation is a great cause and would have donated to them. But the Turtle Walk program is a scam. On other sites, the Museum has posted reviews after mine stating how great the program is and that I misunderstood "walking on the beach to see turtles laying their eggs" as "seeing a nest". I didnt. I specifically asked questions about the turtles laying their eggs on the beach and seeing them do that.

We went on May 19, 2014. The ladies who greeted us as we came in were very friendly and helpful, talked to my little girls (ages 3 and 5) so nicely, and got them excited to see their turtle and their kids play room. Going with children as young as mine was a little tricky, because I like to stop and read about histories etc, and... they dont. At all. But they enjoyed seeing the fiddler crabs around the docks, and seeing the butterflies. (There werent many in there when we went, but there were tons of larvae, so I imagine that place will be filled nicely in a few weeks. We went a bit early in the season for butterflies.) Mostly, we enjoyed walking on the nice trails outside, seeing the lovely spanish moss, and seeing what plants were growing. I enjoyed reading about the different plants, and learned a lot! I wish I had grabbed a scavenger hunt for the kids, as I saw other kids doing it, and seemed to enjoy it! The girls enjoyed talking to the horses also. And most of all... I enjoyed that it was free! And we took some lovely family pictures while we were there!

The Coastal Discovery Museum was one of my favorite activities during our trip to Hilton Head. My favorite part of the trip was the self guided tour that you can take on the grounds. It provides a nice walk includes beautiful trees, marshes, a butterfly enclosure, boardwalks, interesting plants, and an old cemetery. The kids that were a part of our group were most excited about the "Meet and Greet" (only on certain days, check their calendar) where they got to interact with snakes, chickens, a horned lizard, bunnies, and some gators. They also liked seeing the horses on the property. The inside part of the museum didnt hold their attention or ours. There was a little shop and some exhibits but we came for the outdoors stuff. If the indoor exhibits were better this would be a 5/5 rated place!

Our whole family enjoyed this so much! The discovery kids room was a huge hit with our 9, 7 and 3 year old. Our 9 year old loved the art gallery! We paid for the Lowcountry Critter experience and it was completely worth it! Our littles held a boa, baby alligators, bunnies, and our 3 year old little boy LOVED carrying the chickens around. The butterfly house was so educational and they especially loved the chrysalis that were in the process of turning to butterflies. We walked out on the osprey boardwalk and saw the marsh up close. I only wish we could have done more while we were there but we happened to be there during a heat advisory when the heat index was 113 degrees. I would DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone of any age!

This is the place if you want to take a deep breath, and spend a couple of hours away from the beach or golfing! My family loved it and we have a three year-old and a seven year-old! We saw a super presentation of alligators and Low Country animals. The kids even got to touch the gator! Wonderful place to take a walk, look at art, see some horses, learn about the history of the island, and spend a little money in the cute gift shop. I bought 2 stained glass alligator mobiles for my kids. Cant understand why folks thought this place was boring. I guess it depends on what you bring to the experience. Well be back!

I really loved the discovery museum, and not only because its free, but because its relatively small exhibition, was very informative and well organized, it tells the history of the island, including the gullas connection, the families who lived here, and some stuff on nature as well like the sea turtles on the island... I would totally suggest this museum to history and nature lovers, and it doesnt hurt to strike a conversation with one of the volunteers on site, they know so much about the island... And even helped me with food choices.

As a big advocate of the museum I encourage everyone to visit. They have great program for kids and it can be bundled with the Planetarium on Sunset Beach. The work the muesum is doing is so important to protecting and reserving the wildlife, plantlife and history of the area. The touch tank is great for kids and the opportunity to engage in some amazing g kid programs is well worth it. There is not a lot of stuff to do on Ocean Isle outside of the beach so this is a nice break.

We did the segway tour with Jayna. It was so much fun and we learned a lot. Jayna did an excellent job explaining things and even took photos of us on the segways. The museum is free if you dont want to do the segway. They have a person that brings in live animals one day a week. It was really neat to see all this and learn the history behind it.

We stopped by on our exploration of Hilton Head. It’s free and worth checking out. Relocating to the Honey Horn plantation in 2007, the property is beautiful. Housing three boardwalks, a butterfly enclosure, and a brief history of the location, we also got the pleasure of enjoying an art exhibit the museum was hosting.

Great combination of historic beauty, gallery space for current artists and other collections, retail including books and gifts, and continuous events and special lectures. Always an emphasis on nature and culture of the SC Low country. Blessed with this venue.

This was a neat place. We went because we wanted something to do other than lay on the beach. I liked being able to just walk around and explore everything. We didnt take any of the tours, but they sounded interesting. I would visit again. Very kid-friendly.

Kids may have been a little young to really enjoy and educate themselves here. It did allow space for them to run in the open areas outdoors. Then cool down inside and by a beverage before leaving. Us adults however enjoyed reading all the information.

A beautiful place with great history and art. Dont miss Joe Moffos alligators, snakes and lizards. Where else can you hold an alligator while draped with a real snake boa? Lots of tours originate here and classes! Its our crown jewel.

This was a cool little museum in Hilton head. Yiu cant go wrong taking a day off from the beach to go to a park. This is a small park and plenty of places to hide from the sun on a bench so I suggest to come here of you have down time.
