I was highly amused to see ratings for my high school on Google Maps, so here are my two cents: I graduated last spring from an Ivy League college (to which I admit that I was lucky to get in, but also worked hard to do so) and in retrospect, my years at Hotchkiss were some of the best. I cared about all my classes (I felt an obligation to have an honors or AP grounding in every basic subject such as the sciences, history, literature, etc.) and felt as though all of my teachers returned the same level of attention. Mandatory sports every day sometimes felt like they got in the way of pursuing as much academic material as possible, but sports kept me in shape and helped create and nurture lifelong friendships. Hotchkiss truly is in the middle of nowhere, but often this may have served as an advantage, not a disadvantage. I found that Hotchkiss may not have prepared me for the brutal realities of college (impersonal treatment, difficulty knowing how best to balance your schedule, choosing a major, knowing how to write lab reports to extremely anal standards, 1-2 long problem sets per week per class); in that sense, Hotchkiss was a wonderful place to learn a lot (maybe not as much as possible, but a lot nonetheless), even if it wasnt the best place to prepare for the much more frustrating realities of college. Keep in mind, this boarding school is in no way a place to send kids who are "out of control" or even "unstable." Mental instability among certain peers was handled well, but in some cases had the same ramifications it might have in college four years later. (time off, substance abuse resulting in expulsion, etc.) On a brighter note, many guest lecturers and speakers were of international renown (Oliver Sachs, David McCullough, Howard Zinn), and to some extent there was more time to enjoy these speakers in high school than in college. Boarding school may not be the "normal" high school experience, but mine was an extraordinary one.

I graduated from college recently so after all my education, I have to say my time at Hotchkiss was the best 4 years of my life. Great teachers, great classes, great community and some of the best most memorable experiences of my life. Also located in a beautiful area. I wish I could go back there.
