I saw Ragtime tonight. The entire cast is amazing--especially the actors who play Coalhouse and Sarah--and the themes are so timely and so relevant to the concerns of our time. (Sad to say, a story based on 1910, written in 1975 is so incredibly relevant to our times.) It portrays the struggles of immigrants, the plight of the working poor, and anti-black violence. Too, it shows well-meaning white people who dont quite do enough but who grow in awareness and become more committed to act. It also shows the dream of America that we all want to achieve and to share. It is beautiful, heart-breaking, and inspiring. Theres so much to think about in this play, and the production is incredibly professional, from the simple but ingenious set and props to the beautiful costumes and outstanding orchestra. I cannot recommend it enough. I happened to buy tickets simply because I thought it would be nice to see a play while passing through Tuscaloosa on our way home from vacation. I feel blessed to have seen it. I hope it inspires us all to do all we can to help one another and to make America a place where everyone can "ride on the wheels of a dream."
