I thought the apartment complex was great when we first moved in, but it quickly went downhill. The first problem was that we were put into a "pet building" even though we didnt have any pets, so we had to constantly dodge pet landmines since nobody there believes in a pooper-scooper. They had problems filling all the units, so less-desirable individuals were allowed to move into the community which created many problems. People doing doughnuts in the parking lot and racing through the place at high speed created a truly dangerous parking lot. Speaking of parking lots, be prepared to almost fight for parking in front of your building. There were many times I had to park 100 yards away from my building due to a lack of parking. The security gates that you pay to live within NEVER CLOSE, so anyone can come and go as they please whether they live there or not. I know of at least 4 different shootings while I lived there (two were in the building next to ours), several cars and apartments were burglarized, and one persons car was even the victim of arson. I witnessed several narcotic transactions in the parking lots. The last straw was when someone tried to get into my apartment late one night while I was watching TV. I am not much of a complainer, but I had to call the police on 7 different occasions while I lived there. For a community that "does background checks on all residents," that is 7 too many calls that I had to make. The sewer runs into the pond, so do not eat the fish IF you can catch one. The fishing is nonexistent after the dam on the pond broke in Spring 2013. If you do live there, make sure you turn off the utilities the day you finish moving out, or else the workers will leave the lights on and the water running so your bill gets run up. Pray that you never need "after-hours" or emergency maintenance. Our toilet was constantly running one day and the knob to turn off the water broke. Even though we submitted a maintenance request at 3 pm the day it happened, it was not fixed until late the next afternoon which ran up a big water bill. You can buy a house with a USDA mortgage for HALF the price of rent at The Links (which is what we did!) and build equity instead of throwing away money with rent and the overpriced Lindsey Communications cable (they resale Dish programming) and sluggish internet if they decide to stick you in one of the many apartments where you cannot get Dish Network or DirectTV. If you want to live in fear of being run over or burglarized, or you like to be surrounded by thugs hanging out in the parking lot at 2 AM with loud thumping music, then this is the place for you. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful community, dont be fooled by the pond like I was---run away!

I moved to Tuscaloosa two years ago to transfer to the University of Alabama from another University. The Links had been advertised on many apartment guide websites. It looked nice enough online, and even nicer in person. I signed a lease. That was my mistake. Within my two years (cant believe I stayed) of living here I have never been treated so poorly by staff and residents in my life. If there was a maintenance issue, which happens ALL of the time, employees would take longer than necessary to come and fix the problems, and had no idea what they were doing in the first place. Every supposed fix was broken again in a week. The worst part of it was that the husband of the apartment manager was the one to fix items in my unit, and blamed me for each and every problem simply because of my age (mid twenties). I do not appreciate age discrimination what so ever, or being spoken to like a three year old. The fact of the matter is the inside of these units are the cheapest built I have ever seen; NOT worth what they charge. Aside from that the whole community is just awful. Several gang affiliates reside in this community, along with drug dealers. At the beginning of this year, my neighbor had his front door taken down by a battering ram and raided by the narcotics team (about 10 cop cars and a large van) and was subsequently arrested. There have been shootings here in the past resulting in some deaths, and drug deals happen every day. Loud music, parties, and fights are just some of the things you can look forward to while living here, along with thugs hanging out in the parking lot all hours of the night. Its advised to pack heat while residing here. No amount of complaints will make a difference because the staff is the laziest I have ever seen. The sheer expense of living here is astronomical. I pay almost as much, if not more, than those who live in a house when it comes to my electric bill and I only have a one bedroom unit. Their air units must be from the 70s, coupled with practically no seal on windows and doors, causing the monthly bill to be ridiculous even if you keep the thermostat on an appropriate temperature. It is NOT a gated community as advertised because the gates NEVER close. Security is obsolete. The Links may have once been nice, but now it is effectively government housing. So, if you are a drug dealer then this is the place for you, otherwise, RUN.

Do NOT sign a lease here! My boyfriend and I moved here last summer. There were not many options after the tornado, and it seemed like a decent place. The apartments are very nice. Its unbelievable how nice they look on the outside. I have heard from many different people that it is something having to do with "government housing". Either way - the residents here are disrespectful and the employees are lazy. Our first utility bill was $306 because something was wrong with our hot water heater, which we pointed out in the first 24 hours, and was not fixed for a month and a half after 4 phone calls and 3 maintenance reports. We have given this place several chances, and its just plain ridiculous. Id like anyone reading this to know this negative feedback is not out of anger, but out of sheer disappointment of the entire community. It has some serious work that needs to be done, or it needs to flat out close down because its awful. Also, if youre worried about security it may be one of the biggest issues here! We heard after moving in that there was a shooting here. We still kept the attitude that it could happen anywhere. But since then there have been two more robberies and another shooting. Not to mention the seriously loud car music, fighting and screaming all hours of the night (especially saturday nights), and people going through the gates however they want. Its the most annoying thing to pull up to the gate with your card out and the car behind you pulls in front of you waiting for you to open the gate. Or they jump in front of you as soon as you swipe your card, or they simply go in the exit gate when someone comes out. It is absolutely ridiculous!! Also, prepare yourself for double parked heaven. Because everyone that lives here apparently believes they are entitled to 2 parking spaces directly in front of the building. I am not the type of person to go out of my way to complain, but if I can save someone a year of this overpriced hell hole I will definitely do it. Best of luck in your apartment search. Word of advice: go to Northport!!
