Of the hundred or so breweries Ive been to this was the first Ive been to in RVA and from my experience most of RVA IPAs are low on the IBUs and low on the ABV so when I saw the Hoplar was a dry hopped Imperial with 100 ibus and 8.5 abv my complete attention was had. Turns out Hardywoods beers are kind of the opposite of my previous trip experiences. This building almost doesnt look like a brewery, but more an old school meat packing plant, but the more you think about it, its pretty much what breweries should look like. Big red brick warehouse, plenty of parking and space to congregate as often the tasting room overflow demands it. Middle of nowhere. I can see many events going down here, but i dont see it filled to the brim on the daily. What friendly staff they have. Asking for their best seller they turned me to the singel which was interesting due to style (Belgian Blond) and it really works. Crisp, smooth and easy to see why they sell a ton of this. A few of these and I was ready to try what i was most interested in. Hoplar was everything i imagined it to be and more. It reminds me of my all time favorite Ruination IPA, but the bourbon sings through. Take OAWs American Strong mix with Ruination and a little less hops and i think your spot on to the Hoplar. Love how they do pitches and had i come back I would have ordered 1 of each and had a good day drinking session. A few more of these and I realized Im not gonna make it at this pace. I have to try some other beers. Moved to the taster flight, but sadly i couldnt remember much of the beers themselves other than they all had high ABVs. Flight beer after flight beer was chased by either Singel or Hoplar and i had a hard time even calling a cab to pick me up. Price is as usually very reasonable since your getting it from the source. No food or snacks and your standard basic minimal bathroom. Wine barrels for setting your beer down for a few. If this was located somewhere downtown like at the old train station this place would absolutely kill. You changed my mind about RVA IPAs.

We went to one of the Food Truck Court nights. The place was ridiculously busy, but they had so many food trucks that for the most part it was easy to get food with little to no line. Hardywoods beers are solid. Most of them arent styles I enjoy, but plenty of other people do! They have a few bar stations now (there was only one the last time I went) because theyve expanded into an additional space. There are a lot of picnic tables outside, which Im sure are lovely to hang out at when theres less of a crowd but Ive honestly only been there for some of their larger events. Other than the food truck nights (most Thursdays I believe) they do allow you to bring your own food, but they dont otherwise sell anything onsite other than their beer (and a lot of non-edible swag) so plan accordingly.

Best place to grab a brew. I appreciate that they offer a Pilsner and a Cream Ale, two incredibly drinkable beers. You dont feel like you just drank a meal when drinking them. The problem that most micro-breweries have is that theyre so hell bent on making IPAs, probably because it sells, Hardywood does a great job of diversifying their beer portfolio so everyone can find something they love. Hardywood always has interesting bands playing and support the local music community really well. In my opinion, Hardywood has done a fantastic job maintaining a strong brand identity without sacrificing the quality of their beer; GREAT JOB! All my friends that visit Richmond, I take them to Hardywood. Its quickly becoming a Richmond staple.

Hardywood Park makes great beer. But visiting the brewerys tasting room is a great experience. The owners are great, down-to-earth guys. You can purchase pints for consumption on premises, buy a growler and fill it to go, or buy bottled beer of one of their many different brews. Id recommend almost anything in the Barrel Series, already wonderful beers that have been aged in local bourbon barrels. Another great recommendation (as any local beer lover will tell you) is the Gingerbread Stout. This annually produced award winning beer generates lines outside their building every November for days after its release!

Crowded, insufficient indoor seating, plenty of outside seating but no heaters as most places have. Private space wide open with lots of seating inside, but "closed for a private event," according to the employees inside. Beer not on tap -- a can was opened for the two different kinds we ordered. Bathroom space very limited. Kids everywhere. Dark, dank, smelled like a frat house on a Sunday morning. Skip it and head to one of the much better places over in Scotts Addition.

Hardywood has by far the best stout beers that I have ever had. The type of stout varies seasonally (gingerbread, bourbon barreled, etc.). They often have parties to celebrate the releases of new beers. They always have a great 4th of July party. The Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball field is nearby the Hardywood brewery, so the brewery provides the perfect setting for a fantastic free fireworks viewing. The brewery also often has music on the weekends.

Four out of five stars because the place is now so popular that parking is impossible and events are not fun because of the huge mob of people everywhere. I love their beers personally, but their buzz has caused the crowds to grow larger than the facility comfortably accommodates and it just isnt fun to go anymore. If big crowds are your thing go for it, but if not head over to strangeways or ardent for a bit calmer scene.

A well done brewery. However, when we stopped by there wasnt anything we couldnt get up here at the same price so we actually left without a purchase. That doesnt detract from the establishments great presentation, but the line could absolutely deserve to move a bit faster. We stood there for a good few minutes while people were placing gigantic orders at the bar upon opening before deciding to move on to the next brewery.

When you enjoy drinking special beers, you need to go to this brewery and take a tour. Youll get a souvenir tasting glass and can try three different brews during the tour. Theyll tell mostly about the brewery and only little about the brewery process. The bar has a nice industrial atmosphere and theres live music being played regularly. There are many homemade brews on tap and canned you can try.

Decent beer selection but not a lot of places to sit and enjoy the beer. Seemed more like a wine tasting set up in the tasting room. Plan on standing around to drink your beer. Tasters of 4 beers were $11 and decent size pours which was convenient. Overall 7/10 for brewery tasting rooms Ive been to. Outside is its redeeming quality, live band and lots of snack/food vendors.

Hardywood immediately became a Richmond institution. They put out phenomenal beer and they have created their own niche in RVA. The brewery itself extremely inviting and open. They have a great tasting room and put on events like farmers markets, food truck events and other beer festivals almost every day of the week.
