Entering this wonderful Synagogue gave me a precious feeling of the past. The walls are decorated to look like marble with paintings to make it cozy. The windows are stained glass. The back wall has 12 windows to symbolize the 12 Jewish Tribes. ~ There is an aaron kodesh with the original cover from the 1800s. ~ I enjoyed viewing the establishment and noticed the wooden benched-seats have a foot stool and book ledge. Quite amazing and not seen in new temples built. They have open houses to make the neighborhood aware of the Jewish history of the temple. For me not much was revealed on the nitty gtitty of Jewish recognition- much of the story was lost for those that are not all that into Jewish History. I feel a more in depth lecture is needed. ~ It was said to learn that the mikvah was covered by surrounding buildings, the loss of so much of the yesterdays. ~ The basement had a small room for selling Judiaca items and sadly that on an OPEN HOUSE Sunday, they didnt have enough to sell and they sold out the scrolls for the Mezzuzahs. ~ A childrens program of hide & seek objects- was going on. Children Jewish and non Jewish enjoyed the program. ~ With my knowledge of temples and Judiaca I would have enjoyed this better if the staff knew more than me.

“Mesmerizing stained glass, never miss it!” Located in Chinatown, Eldridge Street Synagogue may be the most beautiful synagogue in New York. Especially, never miss the main stained glass which was added in 2010 during its restoration. Ive seen many stained glassed while traveling America, but havent met such one. Amazing. When I first entered into an entrance, I thought $14 admission fee is a little bit too much for its small size. It changed as going up to the main floor and seeing a sea-like blue stained glass. The building is not so big like St. Patrik Cathedral or E-Manuel Temple on 5th Ave so one can look around in 20 mins if you walk fast. But I spent almost 2 hrs just looking all the stained glasses and delicate ornaments. Just walk through the nave or sit on it for a while and appreciate its beauty.

The casual street observer might mistake this as an older church, not knowing what treasures are inside. The interior is a testament to New York Citys ever-changing & layered history, the museum raised twenty million dollars over a twenty year period & the resulting restoration is highly impressive! Our tour guide Rachel was incredibly informative and engaging, tours are offered at various times and the museum is open on Sundays. People might think only religion-based programming is available. That is not the case! There often speakers & events covering a wide variety of topics and musical genres. The Museum at Eldridge Street is a part of a very unique block party celebration: the Eggcream & Eggroll celebration.

I took my 1st and 2nd grade class here on a trip about NYC Over Time. Judy was AMAZING and my kids were engaged and enthusiastic the entire 1 1/2 hour program. I cannot express how awesome and interactive this program. Kids created a visual timeline with photographs, became detectives with clues and clipboards and great, applicable worksheets, and then ended with an art project. Judy had fantastic management and even came to the school to do a pre-lesson to prepare the students for the trip. This may have been one of the best trips in my 6 years as an educator. Kudos!!

This museum is such a great representation of the diverse makeup of the Lower East Side. The synagogue is its anchor, which has earned National Historic Landmark designation and is quite impressive in its own right. But the museum also offers a wealth of history and culture, and it strives to offer creative public programming. You can go on a walking tour or attend lectures and musical performances. Definitely worth a visit!

What a fabulous museum! My family played an important role in the hay day of this synagogue. The museum has done a remarkable job at both sustaining and restoring the Synagogues most magnificent edifice and at teaching the history of the community which built the Synagogue. The guides are extremely informative and there are few landmarks in the City, artistic, and religious which can compare to the Eldridge Street Synagogue.

A gem worth searching out. Tour person Elsa was so personable and explained everything so well w interesting stories from her family background. Wonderfully restored. I thank the congregation for opening their beautiful house of worship to share. Totally worth finding. I walked .4 mile from there to the tenament museum - which accents the them of immigrants and community.

Came here for the synagogue and it did not disappoint. It is breathtakingly majestic. One does not need to be religious to appreciate it and the free guided tours are offered only to provide context. The staff are friendly and always ready to answer questions. Pay-as-you-wish every Monday.

This is one of my top choices for museums in the City. Every time I go I learn something new. The architecture and stained glass windows are amazing. The informative exhibit in the basement is worth visiting after or before the tour.

We liked the way it is preserved. We come from Cochin, Kerala, India... There is also Jewish synagogue. So we became interested. The colour stained glasses, numbered seating arrangement lighting etc are kept intact.
