Gray Ghost winery in Amissville, VA has some of the smoothest, best tasting wines Ive ever sampled. I have visited and joined many other Virginia wineries, and there are always selections that are bitter or harsh at those other places. My wife and other food and wine appreciating friends all agree they like or love every sample of wine at Gray Ghost all the way down to their table wines. Smooth, not too delicate, flavorful, and full-bodied without the tannin bitterness/harshness present in so many other wines (California, Im looking in your direction) are all the traits I enjoy in Gray Ghost wines.

This place offers around 10 wines for a $5 tasting. About half are whites or reds and a dessert type. The tasting room is small and will hold about 8 or more at a time per table. The rest is open space or lounging area on the second floor. Outside there is a pleasant seating area and a large apple tree to relax under. Parking is a gravel lot and very spacious and flat unlike other wineries. As of 2016 Va Go pass provides free tasting. Though at first they did not seem to understand what my card was for. Recommended double check the site for instructions on using the pass.

A short, ~2 hour jaunt from Washington, D.C. I did a tasting of six or so wines, all very good, but chose not to buy after one of the employees explained the vineyards homage to the Gray Ghost, a Confederate officer/local hero whose apotheosis made me, as a modern American, a little uncomfortable. I went in early spring so there wasnt much to see in the vineyard itself, but I did check out the quaint upstairs lounge with books and armchairs as well as the gazebo and the balcony for summertime picnics. Also a good place for cutesy wine-themed gifts.

The property is beautiful. The tasting room had pictures of the family and had a genuine feel of caring for their wine, opposed to several of the other wineries that have a manufactured feel. We were extremly lucky to have the owner,Al, serving us at the wine tasting. He was very knowledgable but allowed us space and time to develop our own opinions. Not pushy at all. Clearly confident in his wine. Bottom line: great tasting wine.

Grey Ghost has wonderful wines! Their staff is informative, they value local history, are very knowledgeable about wines and are very friendly. My only issue was not the winery, but the bus load of guests who were loud, pushy and rude. If you are part of a tour group, keep in mind other patrons visiting the venue are just as valuable as you are.

Favourite winery in all of Northern Virginia bar-nun. If you want to see history in a glass. This is the place to come. Family friendly and young ones are not "run off". Our lil girl is well known by the owner and staff. We always feel like family when we enter! Love this place!

They give you a small selection of there wines to taste but they are all are pretty good. If you are looking for it to be romantic get the cheese and crackers and a bottle after youve tasted and go outside to the gazebo, absolutely breathtaking! I would definitely re-visit.
