We visited Solaro tasting room here in Houston on its opening weekend. We love our wine and when we cant get out of Texas to have some we explore hill country. This building has been sitting there for some time and weve been eager for it to open right in our back yard. The venue is beautiful. Modern Texas on the inside and a cute back patio. Parking is across the street (TC Jester) and wasnt immediately clear that it was there. A few spots are directly outside. The staff were super friendly and seemed knowledgeable about the wines they were pouring. My very eager and knowledgeable husband tried to talk to some of the staff about other varietals and compare etc... their knowledge was limited to the wines at hand. Which makes sense but it would have been nice to talk further. There were a couple stunners among the wines as well as several duds. Since taste is subjective I will refrain from naming them. The group (three other couples we had not previously met) we were paired up with felt the same way as well. What I found surprising were the prices. Definitely not priced comparably, even for a "boutique" winery. We were also put off by the tasting fee not being waived (at least one!) with a purchase. I believe they do waive for wine club members which is pretty standard. I was not motivated to join the wine club. Which says a lot! I left thinking that all in all Id give it another look if a friend wanted to go but I will not be seeking it out on my own again. I have since, gone with gfs that have wanted to try it. Theyve raised their basic tasting price for 4 wines and you are encouraged to get a glass after or share a bottle. It is still a fun atmosphere but Im still not entirely sold on them price vs. quality wise.

Weve been frequenting the Austin location for a few years and have dropped in on Houston a few times as well. Having been to many Texas wineries, my wife and I can both say that Solaro makes THE best wines in the area. Also, weve helped with harvest and crush and can say with confidence that their operation is rock-solid - their folks genuinely care about each step of the process. Their staff is knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive. We would encourage folks that like good wines, red or white, to stop by and try a tasting.
