Horrendous experience. We drove an hour north to jim Thorpe for yesterday because the weather was warm. We checked the website several times and look for alternative phone numbers to reserve tickets for the train ahead of time but reservations are made through a phone number that is out of Hamburg Pennsylvania and reservations can only be made Monday through Friday. Meanwhile, stupidly, the train is running Saturday and Sunday. So, the only phone number contact for the train on the weekends when it is running and no return call. So we took a chance to drive the hour up and arrive at 12:30, stood in a short line at the ticket counter, and then learned that the next train at 3:30 was long ago sold out. When I ask them why they didnt have an announcement about that on their voicemail, they stated that they can never determine when the remaining seats will be sold at the ticket counter. When I asked them why for god sakes they didnt just post current information on their website for people driving from out of the area, which is almost everyone, they just threw up their hands. This is major miss management. I feel quite sure that they have this set up this way because then all of the hundreds of tourists who arrived in the little town to do the train ride with their little kids, will now be walking around the town eating in restaurants and shopping, which would be fine if that was for the intended trip but its just to waste time and meanwhile the little kids are all disappointed. Im sure the merchants in the town sucker the train people into setting it up this way because then you have thousands of people showing up in tiny little Jim Thorpe, and the train has been sold out for a long time, and no updates on the website or elsewhere to know that, and then people spread out around the town to buy Christmas gifts instead. We had a very overpriced mediocre pizza, went in a couple of small shops, and left in a very bad mood. We were in such a good mood when we were driving up. Also note that the town could make much more of all of the hundreds of people waiting around the train area by the clock tower by offering horse and buggy rides and real foods instead of just hot pretzels, and selling arts and crafts etc. At least people wouldnt be sitting around with their hands holding up their heads nodding off and bored, and they would likely be spending money and contributing to the town. Jim Thorpe is really pretty but what what an awful experience from beginning to end. We will never go back and I dont suggest that you do so. Even if you reserve tickets on the phone line Monday thru Friday for your weekend train ride, just know that you will be sending an hour and a half in a line outside of the train while it is at the station because otherwise you wont get any kind of seat that you would want such as the wrong side of the train that faces the mountain cliff or near the bathrooms. Everybody that we met was completely fed up. Sorry Jim Thorpe, I have lot of better other things to do for the xmas festivities with my 3 year old and husband.

Beautiful scenery surrounds you on this relaxing train ride through the Lehigh Gorge area. I went in July and I recommend getting an earlier train before the heat of the day sets in. It was very comfortable and relaxing. If you are really into trains and want something else to do then the always popular Strasburg Railroad, or would like a longer trip, then this is a must check out train. I highly recommend checking the schedule for when they have the special car you can load bikes into and they take you out and drop you off and you ride back to Jim Thorpe along the adjacent Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail.

Spent $54 for three open air seats. With these updated seats you cannot hear the narrated tour as its too loud. I asked if the speakers could be turned up and was told it would be too loud for the cabin seats. So you pay an upgrade and you dont hear anything. The scenerary was all trees and not worth the ticket cost. It only went 7 miles then reversed. Would recommend taking one way and biking the path back or going rafting over an overpriced train ride that does not deliver the scenary. Not used to writing reviews but felt people should know so they can spend their money on something else.

Fantastic old railway system. We went for the Christmas train this year and our 2 year old had a blast. The scenery is gorgeous and you should take lots of pictures. The train is very well maintained with very helpul staff. The Christmas train did sell out repeatedly so get there early. Only gripe is that the did not mark which train entrances were opened so people were milling about looking lost, and then when they did open the train for passengers they started pushing. Also the station has an on-site bathroom which was very clean for being a publi bathroom.

My wife and I enjoyed the open air car for the 70 minute trip (9 miles out and 9 back). The few downsides was that we were on the less scenic side of the car and we had to wait for a quite a bit of time for a Norfolk Southern train that had right of way due to it being their tracks. Right of ways are not the fault of these leisure railroads but it irks me the way big railroads ruin such enjoyable experiences. The staff was friendly and it had some great views. Would definitely suggest for anyone that loves seeing beautiful scenery via rail.

We stayed for a long weekend just before the 4th of July, and on our first walk out of the Inn I heard the unmistakable sound of a steam whistle, turned around and there she was....a beautiful PA RR steam engine! We came to find out that its very rare for them to bring in the steamer so my soft spot for them from my railroading grandfather lead us there for a ride. A beautiful guided tour through the gorge, window seat over the bridge is the best! I was just so lucky to have been there for the steamer....really made it for me! Awesome!
