The place is amazing. Been there four years, and almost exclusively swim; the pool is arthritis rated, which means a bit warm for most. But for those with joint or muscle issues, its a dream. The activities, the facility, and the community camaraderie feels like another planet away from the city and the traffic and the hustle to nothing. The seniors take adventures in nature, culture, history, or entertainment once a month, besides the regular programs of fitness they have shared with each other for years. The childcare is a dream; Id like to sneak in and check out the different stories of the play gym some time. The kids always come out calm and enjoying each other. The variety of fitness activities included with membership for adults cant be beat. The lobby hosts art shows, there are frequent reasons for cupcakes or fruit plates and some kind of celebration. Despite the constant activity there is always enough room and time to access the class or the facility feature you want. The building itself is a treasure; it is 100 years old, and the gym is used two or three times a year by film crews. Once a month, there is a family swim movie night; they project G rated favorites on the pool walls, throw all the float devices in, and then the kids and families hang in the pool for a flick! Yeah its that cool. A family could pretty easily fulfill most of their activity and entertainment needs for the year at NECC on a very affordable budget. Here is the announcement for the current executive director coming on board. She has done nothing but improve things in the last two years. "She seems an ideal fit as a marathon runner, tennis player and Ironman Triathalon participant. As an attorney, she has volunteered with Elders in Action, the Senior Law Project, and other activities. She was most recently executive director of Do Jump Theatre. " What can you say. NECC is a phenomenon!

I called in and spoke with a very nice woman who gave me details about membership (52.00 per month and free child watch). The child watch was the biggest draw for me because I need to be able to bring my children. I drove down and filled out an application, waited about 15 minutes before someone could help me. Then they told me that they are no longer including child watch in their membership and children must be members before they can be watched. So that bumps it up to 65.00 a month. I wish that had been communicated more clearly either on the phone or on their website so that I wouldnt have wasted my time and could have come in more informed. All in all I think that its cheaper than 24 hour fitness so I will probably join. Im just not happy about the lack of knowledge of staff and communication. For a community center, they dont do a stellar job at keeping it affordable for the community. Also the parking situation isnt that great so consider that as well. UPDATE: Just spoke with someone at 24 hour fitness and the cost breakdown is 24.99 for your first child 19.99 for any subsequent children. This is for unlimited child care. And membership was quoted at 39.99 a month so the community center (for me with two kids) is only 20.00 less a month. It really boils down to how many kids you have and the classes available. If you dont have kids 24 hour fitness is cheaper than the community center for the monthly fee. I know 24 hour fitness has a lot of class options that arent available at the community center. There is an initiation fee at 24 hour fitness which varies according to their promotions (so dumb!) The community center has no initiation fee but you must be a member for a minimum of 3 months before you are allowed to cancel. Hope my review helps any parents who are trying to compare gyms in the area.

What a wonderful community center. (Note that it is a private membership center for the community, and not connected to Portland Parks and Rec) They offer fitness rooms, classes in everything from yoga to adult ballet, a wide variety of youth programs, and extra activities such as craft fair and evening events with speakers from the community. Indoor heated pool, too! Now this is a community center, it is not a fancy gym but it is affordable, clean, and the staff are friendly. My kids have sharpened their bike riding and swimming skills, and gained confidence, through the classes offered at NECC.

I have been a member for almost two years and have enjoyed swimming in their lovely pool. There are many nice people at NECC but perspective members need to be warned that communications between staff and the public are occasionally garbled or non-existent, especially when schedules are interrupted by maintenance needs or holiday adjustments. The swimming program is especially poor at letting swimmers know the pool is unexpectedly closed that hour or day. This has happened twice to me. The staff members apologize but say there is no solution this problem.

This center really knows how to go above and beyond. The facility is clean and the staff is friendly! The indoor pool is perfect for Portlands rainy weather and is a great addition to the neighborhood. I love their large gymnasim where ceiling to floor mirrors line the wall and are great for any aerobic and dance class. The prices arent asking too much for monthly memberships. I love the local aspect and that when you go you see a lot of the families from your block!

Today, after a yoga class I asked at the main desk and in the office about the survey for the Silversneakers program. No One seemed to know what I was talking about nor cared! Then, there was no paper in the suggestion box! With these 2 experiences and nothing happening, I walked out. If it wasnt for Adrienne and Alison,I would not be there, either. Gail Sutton

A great community center that offers a wealth of activities and facilities, from the swimming pool to yoga classes, this is a location that really seems to do what it intends, and brings the community together. There is a great vibe here, and a positive experience worth sharing.

Love this place. They have an amazing daycare with creative and intelligent staff, and my daughter and I are always greeted at the front desk like theyve known us forever. Highly recommended.
