I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life. However I love to travel, and I must say that the Oklahoma City Zoo is beyond outdated. I do give them credit for their latest editions, such as the elephant exhibit and the childrens zoo. I have indeed noticed for years that there are areas of the zoo that are not well maintained. They consist of algea, trash and floating in the water. Many of the animals in the aquatic center are kept in confinement with very little room to move. I do not believe that the cages are well maintained. Such a disappointment that the animals get taken from their natural habitat only to be thrown in a tank the size of them. The touch table in the aquatic area is no longer available. Amongst many other things, such as in operable misters, dolphin shows are gone, decrease in sea lions, tanks are refilled and rarely scrubbed down. The raccoons..? I no longer see and the otters, is there only one now? Why is the tank dirty... So so dirty every time I attend the zoo. Animals have been dying at a more rapid Rate then our surrounding zoos. Deaths in which some couldve been prevented. Very little shade is provided for the animals as well. We know Oklahoma heat can be brutal, I am mind boggled by the fact that there is little shade at some of the confinements. The lion exhibit, such a pitty. Might as well look at fossils because the males are gone, theres already a dramatic decline in lions around the world also. There may be a female or two... Theres some cheetahs... I am sure not everyone focuses on an animals well being and the exhibit and environment their in along with their everyday life each time they attend the zoo. I however, take it into consideration. I believe Oklahoma City can do a lot, lot better.

This zoo was the best. Friendly staff (Santa Claus at the Choo Choo Train Yes Im talking about you.) A lot to see ---- A LOT !!! It was also educational. The workers on the express and Choo Choo train gave a history of the animals and fun facts as they shuttled you. It was really a great place to take the kids even though they got hot and tired from walking. Make your kids wear shoes because flip flops have 0 support and the pavement gets hot. My feet were just fine in my Gel Kayano ASICS. Get the Zoo-it-all wrist band. It did save us money. If you want to just ride the elephant express around and look at the animals get the express pass and pay the admission price, but if you want to see the shows (sea lions, feed the giraffes, birds and stingrays) get the Zoo It All. There were things we didnt get to see and we were there from 10:15 am until close. Yes there is a lot of walking, but they have cool down mist spots and awesome air conditioned spots everywhere you turn. I did pay $3 for a bottle of water at one point, But my wife got a large cup of ice water for 27 cents and got free refills. One of the Powerade Machines ripped me off on a $2 bottle of Powerade. The machine did not give my $3 in change back, but Guest Relations resolves the issue on our way out. The best is the Sea Lion show. I highly suggest you see that. I gave a 4 star because we didnt get to see all the exhibits because we was running from show to show. Really to see everything you need to go for 2 days. 1 day to see the shows and the next just to wander around through the exhibits. We will definitely come back and I highly recommend you bring your kids. I did see adults couples walking around there too.

What an incredible zoo!! I havent been to many zoos, so I dont have a lot to compare it to, but with the cold gray weather it could have easily been a miserable day. Not so! The staff is friendly, welcoming, and apparently love their jobs. Everyone was willing to answer questions, offer information, and talk about the zoo or the animals. The animals seemed to be (at least to my untrained eye) very well cared for. This is NOT a circus. The animals are just doing what animals do. It was clear the enclosures were cleaned and maintained very well. The elephant show did not involve tricks or anything, rather the trainers used it as an opportunity to educate people and encourage the animals to use their brains to find hidden treats. The animals were free to come and go, and did! Once they found their food, they mostly left, except for one who got some extra (sugar-free!) Kool aid. Overall, this is a fantastic zoo, and is clearly being run by people that care about the animals. I will definitely be back!

The zoo is decent for inner city and has a few habitats including the elephants that are exceptional. Rhinos environment is just a large piece of dirt. And many birds are kept indoors in small cages with few visitors. Its a great place to visit periodically and certainly a fun place for children but also it should be a learning experience about the life of a captive animal including seclusion, loneliness, confinement and lack of exercise and lack of socialization. Its a zoo. Not a sanctuary. A good opportunity for children to fall in love with animals and then dedicate some portion of their life to expressing compassion in improving the quality of animal life. The volunteer program is an intense commitment of unpaid 8 hour days in all weather and, sadly, poorly managed and respected. People dont stay long and the application process itself is flawed. I recommend experiencing the zoo and then participating in improving its quality. Its here to stay so it might as well be the best.

We are traveling on a budget and in the area for another purpose. We paid for the $8/person general admission and walked everywhere/did not watch any shows. We felt it was a very good value for our $8. The walkways are very shady with beautiful plants and we dont mind walking. We arrived at 9 a.m. on a week day and were done seeing everything we wanted to see by 1 p.m., just as it was starting to get uncomfortably hot. They allow you to bring picnic food inside, so you dont have to buy the expensive food. We paid an extra $9 for each of the kids to get in to the stingray encounter, but it would have been another $3 each for the kids to get to *feed* the rays, so we did not do that. We live near the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, so were a little spoiled, this zoo is nowhere near as expansive as that one. Still, very good value for the $49 we spent, and the perfect size for what we wanted to accomplish. We did not buy any concessions.

Low entry price compared to other large zoos across the nation. I found out why, too.. they charge $2-$10 for just about anything extra that you want to do inside. So $8 a person quickly turns into $50 if you dont purchase the more expensive entry option. Overall, a pretty good zoo. There are a good number of animals across the board from bats and fish to giraffes and elephants. Everything in between, too. The maps they hand out seem simple enough but the trails twist and turn so much that we got lost multiple times. Took 30 minutes of searching to find the bears even with a map in our hands. For anyone who is curious.. a single seat stroller costs $8 to rent and sits so low to the ground that kids cant see most of the animals without picking them up out of it. So bring your own if you have one!
