Golden Rules of Wine and Travel
I have been in a swirl of intense travel recently. Mostly, I have been getting slingshot back to Phoenix every other week with other travel mixed in. I had Cincinnati on my calendar for awhile, but didnt really take notice until I got to the 21c Museum Hotel. In a blur, I checked in doing that my-phone-is-my-oxygen-and-I-cannot-put-it-down thing that I am sure desk attendants hate. But, when I finally looked up and responded to the friendly voice checking me in, I found this smiling hipster and a counter full of little plastic people under glass, which woke me up. Once home to Cincinnatis historic Metropole Hotel, 21c is part hotel, part art gallery, and part yummy-tummy restaurant. When I got there, I was a little early to be checking in, but was reassured that it would only be a few minutes until my room was ready, so I walked around. The "art gallery" part of 21c is hard to miss; contemporary art is on every wall. The hotel had just swapped the art with another hotel so, although the staff wasnt completely knowledgable about what was around them, they seemed excited by the change. Contemporary art pulls at my emotions. I am a roller coaster of ooohhhs and ickkkks when I am around a fair amount of it. While on the 2nd floor (an open museum), I saw one of my favorite Sam Taylor-Wood photographs. (Ooohhh.) Then, I ran into photographs of children holding rats in cages. (Ickkkk.) Before I got exhausted by the ups and downs of contemporary art, the front desk woman gave me my key. Coming off the elevator, I ran into a giant yellow penguin (one of many), which are moved around by guests and employees at all hours. People have been known to run into them walking out of their hotel room doors in the morning. Be sure to look around before stepping over your threshold, if you stay here. They are like really, really tall and bright newspapers with no current news or expression on them. Stay sharp. 21c is good with service. The staff is consistently warm without duplicating some boring customer service standard. They wear what they want (outside of banquet people) and are only distinguishable by a small penguin pin and a smile. The only employees who were slightly churlish were the "meetings" people. They were on their own schedule, they had open conversations about their personal life around the group I was with (really, really detailed conversations), changed clothes throughout their shifts (e.g. black pants to short short jean cut-offs) and packed up meeting rooms while we were still in them (although we confirmed the time allotted to us and paid for it). Overall, it was a good stay. The mini bar, Malin + Goetz toiletries, heated bathroom floors and free wifi make things pretty delightful. Also, the room service is from the yummy-tummy restaurant. I strongly recommend staying here, if you get a chance. I plan on going to the other 21c Museum Hotels in Louisville and Bentonville when I am next needing to wake up from travel monotony.

Gem of an Art Boutique Hotel centrally located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati! A unique experience, especially if you enjoy quirky and sometimes bizarre art. The rooms are modern, spacious, totally renovated, very clean, with crisp sheets and comfortable bedding. The room was quiet and temperature excellent. A complimentary Nespresso machine, iron/ironing board, slippers and robes were provided. (But, no in-room safe.) The front desk staff was young and friendly. Overnight parking was extra, but, the valets were top-notch, providing fast curbside and unlimited in-out privileges. There is an on-site dining room, roof-top bar, spa and museum-style gift shop. Large colorful, plastic penguins were scattered throughout the property, adding a playful touch to the space. Recommended restaurants within close walking distance: "Boca" for upscale dining, and, Nederland Hotels Palm Court for Sunday Brunch. Reservations are a must for both. Nada, directly across the street has amazing Mexican/Southwest menu for casual in-house dining or takeout. Highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

The rooms were very clean, with a very comfortable bed. There was peppermint soap and shampoo, rum infused body wash and soap, and some conditioner. It was all very pleasant. There was a mini bar we didnt partake in so there wasnt a fridge which we could have used. There was a lock box in the drawer and a nice place to use your laptop if you so choose. We got room service from the in house restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered cheeseburgers and they were fantastic and came with miniature bottle of condiments that were adorable. We.also got chocolate mousse and a brownie sundae both were to die for. There is art displayed pretty much everywhere and some of the statues migrate during the day so we shared an elevator with a penguin statue. The front desk staff was very helpful, theyI printed off directions and provided us with cold waters. All and all it was a very pleasant experience and I would highly recommend it.

Stayed here a couple of months back. We had 4 of us in our party, so I had requested and booked a 2 queen bed room online ahead of time. When we got there, they gave us a one king bed room. Talked to management about the mix up, they said theres nothing they can do since all the 2 queen bed rooms were booked up. They did try to help us out by giving us a rollaway bed, still only room for 3 of us. No problem, mix ups happen, we can accommodate. In all fairness, I told management I didnt think I should be charged for the room I booked, but instead be charged for the room I was given. Management said they will contact me via phone or email to either discount and resolve this. Havent heard from them in months, when I call, impossible to talk to a manager. Its understandable that miscommunications happen, but not excusable when when there is no customer service to help resolve the issue. Never staying here again.

What is the best you can ask from a hotel? An experience better than was expected for the value, the 21c has earned it. 1 They have to be directly contacted not reserved by internet services, or your going to pay way to much. Just ask if the room can be discounted..., they will try to earn your business but but but....this isnt motel 6 so no bs low balls. 2 the packages they offer are best way to gain more for less. 3 The museum they have is intelligent and eclectic, visit it. 4 bath robes are made for average people not fluffy ones... period. 5 be careful on what you order for food, the cheese and meat plate was quite..uh..artsy from the room service menu. The spa is on the top floor and then a climb of steps, small rooms, direct service, Im neutral on this, but most claim it great.

Amazing! My mom and I have stayed in the Louisville location before, decided to try a different location, and were not disappointed! The service and staff were friendly and went over the top with hospitality. The food and cocktails at the Metropole were inventive and delicious. Not at all your standard fare. I have no complaints at all! If you want to know how it compares with the Louisville 21c, it felt like there were fewer permanent installations which made the overall experience of exploring the hotel less quirky and a little more like a traditional art gallery. There was also less artwork in our room than at the Louisville location... But that hardly detracts from the overall experience, a negligeable tradeoff, in my opinion.
