Interesting museum on the site of the old Fort Herkimer. The fort was renamed Fort Plain after Herkimer was killed at Oriskany and some folks in the valley felt (unfairly) that he was at fault for loosing the battle and getting a lot of local militiamen killed in the process. The museum is in a nicely restored period house near the original fort, but the fort itself no longer exists. There is a very nice display of artefacts, pictures and maps in the museum that tell the story of the War in the area, as well as a great bookstore. You can walk to the site of the original fort and get a nice view over the Mohawk Valley

The Muesum is a perfect place to learn about history of Fort Plain, inside the house you can see living history, from the 1700s, 1800s and eve early 1900s... You also learn about the area, and the old Fort that once stood just a bit away from where the museum stands... Through out the year the museum throws events, and at times even has reenactors up there to entertain and educate the public... If you are near by, or traveling in the area it is good to check out this piece of history!
