This Landmark is currently closed, its been closed since 2010 so there is no access to the inside. No one seems to know why the monument is closed, but I found out online that there was a car crash that damaged the fence in early 2010. Nonetheless we were able to see it from the outside. It was the very first planned memorial to commemorate George Washington, one of the founding fathers of the nation. It precedes the one in Washington, DC. It is located across the street from Walters Art Museum in Mount Vernon. It was designed in 1829 by architect Robert Mills. Since we did not go inside, I can not confirm or deny the fact that there are 228 or 239 stairs to the top; I will say I was really bummed not to be able to go inside. No idea when it will be reopened to the public. But should you visit while it is opened, remember to be in good physical shape prior to attempting the climb. It is a great memorial, I look forward to going back before leaving the East coast.

This is a rather nice quick stop on a day you have 20-30 minutes to spare. Do check their hours open as this is staffed by volunteers and has limited days / hours. The base inside tour is free and the volunteers are a delight to chat with and they will provide so much history about this monument and the neighborhood around this attraction. To walk up the steps to the top does cost about $6 and is for those with well functioning kneed and hips (NO elevator so if you do walk up then you must also walk down these hundreds of steps). Do talk with the volunteer docents inside the base as this really makes this experience special for you and them.

The staff are friendly and helpful. If you decide to pay the fee, the monument provides one of the best panoramic views of Baltimore. A bit disappointing that you can no longer go outside at the top. You are left looking out through suboptimal plexiglass and a metal gate, but a great view nonetheless. If you have visitors from out of town, I highly recommend this trip, though be warned only 5 people can go to the top at a time. Finally, I would pair this Mt. Vernon gem with a trip to the Maryland Historical Society while youre in the neighborhood, especially since they give a discount if you paid to go to the top of the monument.

Being a proud DC resident, I thought Id find the Washington Monument lame compared to the one in our nations capitol, but that wasnt the case. Yes, this one is smaller, but its just as regal and it is the original Washington Monument. Its located in a cool part of town (Mt Vernon) and is very majestic. As you walk up to it, youll pass by benches and beautiful fountains. The gothic church in the backdrop and the cobblestone streets around it, add to the mystique of the monument. Its worth visiting if youre in Baltimore!

Проездом во Флориду заскочили в этот город(навигатор завел). В пригороде и немного от исторического центра много афро-американцев. В центре можно спокойно гулять. В других местах - сказать не могу. В небе висят вертолеты.

Its an okay monument to see but of if you miss it thats fine as well. My wife an I opted to pay the $6.50 each fee to walk the 257 steps up the spiral stair case to enjoy the panoramic view. Its an okay site to see but nothing breathtaking. Going up the stairs is at last a calorie burn. Beware though, if you are out of shape the climb could be pretty taxing. Overall something to see but not a must do your of activity.

Baltimores Washington Monument opened nearly 60 years before D.C.s monument. A massive Doric column built in honor of the first president, the monument was built atop the highest point in Baltimore at the time. It affords visitors sweeping views of the city and is surrounded by lovely Mount Vernon, a historic neighborhood full of theaters, museums, shops, and sumptuous 19th Century mansions.

If you are in Baltimore, this is a must-see. The climb to the top is a little strenuous, but well worth the view. The docents were awesome to talk with and the interactive maps had lots of fun and interesting things to see. The parks around this monument are well worth the time and I would expect them to be really pretty in the Spring when the water features are active.

Climb to the top for spectacular views of Baltimore. Washington Monument is a treasure to the community, especially since the renovation. Be sure to explore the interactive activities in the lobby too.

CLOSED since 2010. You can still walk around the outside, but no going inside or up the steps until it is renovated and repaired. I have no idea when that might happen.

Just like in John Waters Pecker, it was always a giggle to catch this statue from that one certain angle...
