East Village is quite likely my favorite place in Monterey. Bold claim I know, but give me a moment to elaborate. The mood is calm and quiet. ALL of the staff are friendly and helpful. The place has an air of artistic integrity while staying away from hipster douchebaggery. The tea, alcohol, and pastries are great. The place has events all the time including an Open Mic Night on Wednesday nights that is always a fun event with lively music, unique personalities, and an air of intense competition among artists from around the local and not-so-local areas. For those less comfortable with the notion, East Village IS a hotspot for homeless in the area. Although the staff make sure to enforce the customers only policy for the indoor area, the outdoor patio can often have quite a few homeless individuals along with their pets. I dont take any stars off for that because (1) East Village isnt at fault and (2) Homelessness is a problem on the entire peninsula that should be addressed on a community level, not on a remove stars for businesses with a problem level. Its ultimately a cute shop and one of the few places with reasonable parking in the vicinity. Its close to the transit plaza and Alvarado street so theres no shortage of places you can go to hang out. The staff are generous, sometimes serving popcorn and always having free samples of various pastries. (Real talk, the popcorn is probably to get people to buy more drinks but I like popcorn and I think thats rather clever so whatever). Ultimately, its a place where I feel comfortable and happy to visit as a local. Oh, right, and the prices arent gouging the locals like many of the tourist-trap shops in the area. All in all, great place.

Barsitas were sweethearts. Husband & I came in for a quick cup and ended up being charmed enough to stay and read a while. Great vinyl playing at a good volume. Ambiance was welcoming with lots of natural light. Coffee was perfect temp and strength. Loved the natural sugar option and honey too! They have Chimay, so naturally we stayed long enough to justify having a brew. Fabulous start to a relaxing afternoon. We will be sure to visit again. I would go every day if I were local.

This place is really cool. Part cafe, coffee shop, bar; it has a lot going on. They have live music on some days, and its a pretty laid back and fun place to just chill or do some homework at. The staff have always been super friendly in my experiences as well. parking isnt a problem because theres plenty of street parking around the area. If youre looking for something other than Starbucks, this is the place to check out.

If you love superb coffee, awesome foods, great atmosphere, and a reasonable price with good service to boot you should find your way to East Village and enjoy! Seriously people... why are you not getting in your car and going toward East Villages general direction? All I can say is that I love this place and am grateful that they are family friendly while also keeping a hip and trendy atmosphere. Cheers!

Cool little New York style coffee shop in Monterey that is popular with the local cycling crowd. They make a good brewed coffee and have a small assortment of pastries if you are hungry. They will make espresso coffee drinks as well but they drip is what they do best. Plenty of indoor seating as well as an outdoor patio next to a bike shop. Definitely one of the better coffee shops in Monterey Bay.

My brothers band " the beholders" play and go here a lot, they have great beverages and great bands and acts quit often. I do have to say it isnt your normal coffee lounge, it can be crowded with young kids and VERY loud most of the time, so if your looking to read or write i wouldnt go there unless its before all the mischief.

They have been very rude on more than one occasion. Baristas are not the elite class. Its customer service first. The WiFi is not consistent either can drop off at any time. And when they have poets or singers in the back they shut off your WiFi to force you to listen when all you did was come there to use your computer.

This place will always be Morgans to me. While a number of things have changed over the years, its still a great place to get coffee with awesome outdoor seating. They actually serve alcohol now so that is a plus but on the whole, the draw is that it truly feels like a coffee shop rather than another coffee franchise.

I would give the coffee 2.5-3 stars and compare it to Starbucks. I give the cafe atmosphere a much higher rating. Its welcoming, comforting, ample seating area, feels life the inside of a building from the Flintstones. Extensive range of teas. Pleasant staff. Clearly a popular spot in Monterey.

Good coffee and pastry selection. The various rooms to sit and read/do work make it quite unique. They also have events such as open mic night, which makes it a good neighborhood spot. Im not sure if its just me, but Wi-Fi rarely works here for me, and when it does its very spotty.

The cold press is smooth without any bitterness. Simply perfect. We dropped in for my coffe fix before bringing the kiddos to Dennis the Menace Park. The barista told me it was the former newspaper office building. The stone structure is amazing. Wish I had all day to linger.

The coffee was okay but nothing special, the food (at breakfast) was the usual suspects of tired pastries that they threatened to warm up in a microwave. Note that they charge extra to serve coffee in cups instead of cardboard buckets. The cafe itself is nice and funky.

Beautiful flaky croissants from a local bakery in Seaside. Decaf coffee and several varieties of organic and other blended coffees in drip pots. Beautiful, restaurant-like alcoves and reclaimed wooden door tables. Fireplace. Street parking. Beer selection.

I have been in search of a spot hear in Monterey that offers a gluten free treat. East Village did not disappoint! Their Morning Glory Loaf was just what I had hoped for, and the staff was warm, welcoming and patient with my questions about ingredients.

More coffeehouses should follow the East Village example: good coffee drinks, snacks both sweet and savory, bottle and draft beer for people who want that, several seating areas including a patio. Staff are chill, the music is diverse and interesting.

Its an amazing place to go to and hang out. I go here every once and a while for open mic (every Wed., check it out) and some live music. The food is good, but pricey and not very selective (just some basic snacks), they do have good buns though.

It is good, the staff is friendly, they serve different coffees, teas, pastries, and craft beers if that is your fancy. Also they often host local artists in the back room for anyone to see for free. Be advised some are better than others.
