When I first heard that the USS Iowa battleship was going to be parked in San Pedro, California I was very excited. I spent some time in the military back in my Desert Storm days and Ive always been fascinated with it. I never got it Im much time to talk to or go on Navy ships while I was in the Air Force but I sure got to see a lot of airplanes. This would be the 3rd naval ship that I have visited in the past 10 or so years. I would have to say that the USS Iowa was the most impressive battleship that I have been on hands down. I went for the self-guided tour and I really liked the way they set the tour up. You could go way back into the ship and little arrows and roped off sections would keep you on course. There is plenty of signage up that will tell you useful tidbits of info about the area of the ship you are looking at and there are plenty of helpful people around that can help you with any questions that you may have. I would like to spotlight Darryl Hein in particular because he was very helpful and made my experience awesome so I wanted to give him a shout out. Theres a big parking lot that only charges a dollar an hour and since I did a 3 hour self guided tour, it only cost me $3. That is crazy cheap considering you have to pay $12 just to go visit the Queen Mary which is located in the other side of the harbor. You will want to wear comfortable clothes. It is on the harbor so there is a nice breeze almost all the time so shorts and a shirt should do the trick. I would bring some sun screen as well and most importantly I would bring some comfortable shoes. The tour takes you all over the ship and there are some kind of steep stairs to go up and down and you will want some good shoes for those portions of the tour. At the end of the tour there is a nice shop with a lot of branded stuff. You will want to bring some cash along with you to grab cool USS Iowa souvenirs.

If you are 66", this boat is not for you. You will have to duck at all times. xD With the warning out of the way, Iowa is actually really cool, and there are a handful (and I do mean handful, there are very few people on board that ship) of incredibly dedicated staff who are more than willing to answer any and all questions you have. The ship itself is quite strange, since it has these huge WW2 guns, then Tomahawk missile chambers. And many of the lower decks, and upper parts of the conning tower, are closed to visitors. When you first go in, they advertise their "experience app", which they say is amazing, but if you have issues with it they say that issues are common, which takes out a lot of the novelty and fun. However, they did an amazing job incorporating the ships history (from WW2 - cold war), and had exhibits set up everywhere. There were decorated officers rooms with uniforms, in the Captains room, a guide explained why there were no watertight bulkheads on the interior doors, and why the en-suite had a bathtub (FDR). Best of all, they kept a lot of original things, like the mess hall menus, recipes on how to serve thousands of men, and a mural that crewmembers painted intact, so visitors could get a better idea of what life on the ship was like.

After an hour AT the ticket window (NOT standing in line) I gave up my quest to get a yearly family membership and declined to spend another interminable time just getting several 18 dollar tickets. The credit card machine did not work, the camera did not work, the computer did not work, and the communications between the person inside and the person outside did not work. I was told (AFTER I paid 75 dollars for a family membership) to come back later and maybe it would be working.and perhaps then I could have my picture taken and the pass could then be issued. Maybe. Perhaps. If they could remember. If not, I could pay another 75 dollars and start again perhaps?? Id be careful getting on this ship. With this kind of attention to detail I wouldnt be surprised if the ship sank at the dock with all hands. I got a letter FROM the people telling me that in a week or so Id likely get my 75 dollars back. Im not holding my breath because THEY are holding my 75 dollars. And have probably forgotten it already. Im writing this to remind them. And you!

Hi All! If you really interested in American history, this is fantastic place to visit with kids. It is very well maintained battle ship. You can see 5floors of ship. You will get nice details of how the life of crew is going to be in a typical battle ship. I like the cafeteria of warriors. They put so many historical information pictures inside . Very nice cabin crew bedrooms, and main officers work areas etc...When you happened to visit San Pedro dont miss out visiting Battleship IOWA. Coming to facilitate guests, it has rest rooms in lower deck floor. No food / restaurant in ship. I suggest carry water and snack. I visited on labour day weekend so I got discounted tickets $10 per head. They have portable restrooms at the entrance. They have fleet week , so food trucks are there near parking lot. Over all very good experience.

My Daughter and I visited the Iowa on Fathers Day. It is a self guided tour with lots of veterans to describe different sections of the ship. A nice touch was that they would announce any veteran who came aboard the Iowa over the PA. They dont allow turret inspections, which I thought would have been nice but the accessible parts of the ship were fascinating. I especially liked the "Roosevelt room" where President Roosevelt stayed on his trip across the Pacific. Iowa has the only Bathtub in the fleet! Parking was reasonable with the ability to park in San Pedro and take the trolly to the Iowa. Even my teenaged Daughter enjoyed the tour. At the end of the tour they have the obligatory souvenir shop and food court. There will never be another ship like it, I highly recommend going.

Yeah Im on a battleship. I love having a tour and Im glad that I finally got to visit the USS IOWA. The last time I was in Hawaii I could not visit the memorial at Pearl Harbor for the USS Arizona because it collapsed and it was sad news. I have been on aircraft carriers my favorite but never a battleship until now. So full speed ahead. A7 HIT! I had a blast trying endless drinks and food. What better way to have a pre Memorial Day celebration. The drinks were poured very quickly who needs to go to a bar. The weather was perfect not hot or Smokey something I will rather say when in LA. San Pedro is nice and battleship was located in the same area where I took my princess cruise to Mexico last year. Princess is the name of the cruise line so dont get it twisted. FINGER SNAP.

MY boyfriend and I went here during Lobsterfest on saturday, and we thought it was cool until the security was forcing us to hurry up because they were closing in 45 mins. we told them not to rush us due to the fact my boyfriend had a bad knee and they didnt care at all. they told us our tour was over and kicked us out. someone escorted us out and telling us to hurry up or else he will call back up to get us off. we went as fast as my boyfriend could go and he said we shouldnt have taken the tour if he could not walk fast enough. once we got closer to the exit, other security was there and out of knowhere the guy started to act all nice saying be careful where you step and being all nice. This is the WORST place to go. these people are rude and did not care for others at all.
