This course deserves better care. Played 4/30/17. Fairways needed to be cut and there were more than a few bare spots encountered on the fairways. The greens are small, so challenging, but the needed to be cut. There is a pervasive infestation of poa annua on all the greens. Found the greens to be fairly slow, and unlike the practice green. The course architect deserves to have his course restored to the original design which means filling all the bunkers, green side and fairway with sand. The fairway bunkers on some holes give perspective and aiming points. Without them its a sea of green. On a positive note, there were few players on the course, giving us the sensation of being completely alone on the course...this is telling on a Sunday afternoon. I hadnt played this course in a decade...if they are making improvements, its hard to detect. They need a large capital infusion to buff it up. Perhaps, new investors or a large management company is the answer. I play Prince William Golf Course frequently, a muni that is well maintained...it has lower greens fees and much better conditions. Until taken over by Billy Casper Golf, it was similar to South Wales.

I have been playing at this course for the past 10+ years and have really enjoyed it up until the new management took over. The past two years have definitely been the worst for South Wales. The GM and her husband are the most unfriendly people you have ever met. Her husband whos name is Steve is the worst person I have ever encountered working at a golf course. He is extremely rude. He came and tried to take our carts from us at 7:40 from us while we were on the 18th green and actually strated driving away with our bags and everything still on them. The sign on the cart clearly stated to have the carts in by 8:00PM. This is just one of the many bad experiences I have had with this guy. You really get the impression that this guy is just miserable and doesnt want to be there. Its really unfortunate because the course has a great layout and it is very pretty. Hopefully the owner will wise up and get rid of these two clowns and people will start playing there again.

I have been playing this track for nearly 17 years and have enjoyed it up until this past Sunday. The rates are low (but you get what you pay for) and you can typically walk on without a problem. My 8 year old son and I decided to go walk on to play 18 holes on March 11, 2012. We asked to play 18 however were advised that we could only play 9 holes as carts had to be in by 5:00 pm. I realize golf courses have rules and I have always obeyed by them. We were asked to start on the back nine and we only saw two other groups ahead of us. Our tee time was 1:20 pm. We were not given a chance to play up until the cart return time of 5:00 pm. Apparently this rule only applies to groups with 8 year olds as a older gentlemen and his teenage son that started behind us were able to play through. I have been a long time supporter of this course however they have lost my patronage. Customer service and fairness go a long way in the golf game.

This course holds a special place in my heart. I learned to golf here. I was disappointed that it had closed. When I heard that it reopened, I was ecstatic. I finally got the chance to head out and play. Well, its in rough shape. The whole course is weed filled. The tees are still over grown and the greens are much smaller than they used to be. That being said, the course could be the hidden gem it used to be, it just needs some time and care. I will return, just not for a while. Thanks for opening it again.

This is not a PGA course, but its a fantastic course to go to if you want to play some casual golf or practice. With family or friends I can honestly say, its a great time. Its not perfect but they are actively working to improve the course and they seem like a nice group of employees. A couple holes are worse than others but I wouldnt expect it to be perfect. The price is right. The experience is what Im looking for.

Heres hoping customer service, especially customer service, and good/proper personnel attitude will be markedly improved with the new opening and managerial services. Great layout but never enjoyable because of personnel nastiness. Good luck to them and us! 3 Stars in hopes of the anticipated re-opening. Looking forward to giving it 4 Stars and not reducing it to 1 Star!

My friends and I are really happy to see South Wales open again, best layout in VA. The course is looking great and the new staff seems to be real helpful and friendly. They have have already made a bunch of improvements to the course and arent finished yet. Also the driving range has been updated and looks great. Great golf, great rates, and great people!

South Wales just re-opened and all the golfers I know are happy to see it. Its hard to find an affordable facility to play and work on your game. I thought the management team was very positive and helpful. I also thought the course was in better condition than I would have expected for one that has been shut down for a while.

Good people, great tee boxes and greens, fairways have been greatly improved in the month Ive been going there. At the current price of $35-42 with cart for 18 its a wonderful place to play. I pass three courses to get there. Layout is open and forgiving but still has some challenge to it.

Last time i played there was 2014. Course is great but condition was terrible and has been for years. Fairways-more weeds than grass,no sand in traps, pond on # 2 algae filled. Fees are reasonable but they obviously dont reinvest in course.
