This course features rolling hills and plenty of trees that come into play on several holes, mostly in forcing a blind tee shot. This makes for a very challenging golf course. I have no real qualms with these blind shots as they do add character and strategy. However, combine these features with the fact that this course has but 1 yardage marker per hole, frustration ensues. I spoke to an employee following the round to ask why there were no 200 or 100 yard markers. He said the committee just voted to REMOVE markers. Im not a fan of that at all, and certainly cost me few strokes. The lack of yardage markers multiplied by the blind shots took a great deal of pleasure out of this round. If I have to shoot over a row of trees, fine, bring it on. But if you ask me to shoot over those trees and dont tell me how far to carry the ball.... I feel like youre setting me up for failure. And being mean. The course seems to be cramped, with tee boxes within a short toss of a golf ball from the previous green. The signage of the cart path is often confusing/poorly marked as well. The employee told us how to get from the second to third holes. This was greatly helpful, but signage should be self explanatory. Also, I would advise driving ahead to see where in the world the fairway opens up as you cant see much on a few of the holes. The staff was very friendly, taking a few minutes to explain the route on the cart path to take to get from the second to the third holes, pointing out the driving range, chipping greens, clubhouse, et al. The greens beautiful and high quality. Despite all of the criticisms, this course is definitely worth checking out for the right price.
I played 18 Monday afternoon. While there are some areas of the fairways clearly under repair, I played the ball down everywhere and didnt have an unfair lie. They have surely had to mark some ground under repair for tournaments but 90%+ of the fairways are in excellent condition. This is pretty impressive considering they are bermuda and we had a lousy winter. The greens are very smooth and true; lots of fun to putt. The roughs are in good shape as well. I Love the golf course and am proud to play and work there. Best part was the pace of play. Our 4-some played in 3:45. Never crowded and always a fast pace of play.
I strongly recommend Shelbyville Country Club especially for any social or public event. My first time there was at Samantha Newtons Event & I was impressed. I want to have future events, fundraisers, & social events here. Who can I network with accommodating our community?
