Lower Macleay Trail is one of a series of interconnected trails that run through Forest Park, the nations largest city park. Youll walk next to Balch Creek, discover the stone house locals call the Witches Castle, and walk through some lovely Portland neighborhoods. There are only eight parking places in the park itself. Plan to park nearby. Even on the hottest day the tree cover and rich vegetation keep it cool. The trail is 5.3 miles and an 800-foot rise to Pittock Mansion and is rated as moderate. Take your binoculars for bird watching and camera for a panoramic view of Portand when you get to the top.

This is a favorite Park of mine to hike early in the morning. It is unique in that it has a bridge going passing over the entrance to the trail. The trail always has a creek nearby so its a joy to have the sound of trickling water nearby to immerse yourself in nature. It does get busy after mid morning and is frequented by joggers and hikers on their way to the "Witches house", an old stone house at the fork of the trail to the Wildwood trail which ventures further into Forest Park.

This is a great starting point for exploring Forest Park. One tip though: Its best to avoid the MacLeay trail along the creek, especially on weekends. It tends to be very crowded. If you want a good hike that doesnt have you fighting your way through hoards of people taking selfies, find you way up to Holman Lane and use that to connect to other WIldwood side trails.

Went today for a hike with my son. Got lucky with the parking which is the first challenge. Its a busy trail. We went up and down in about an hour. Looks like you need two hours to get to pittock mansion. Its a workout, dont doubt that. But do it. Even if you only walk up to ruin. Do it. No I dont work at nike.

Great little spot to start your hike to Pittock Mansion or any of the other trails around. There is a restroom and limited parking at the entrance, but, there is street parking a short distance from there. The hike to Pittock is all uphill, but, moderate difficulty and worth the view, then going back down is a cinch.

Great entrance to the forest park area. Parking is a little tedious but its in a neighborhood with limited street parking. Great grass area for kids to play, but the real adventure is getting on the Wildwood trail and walking through the beautiful forest.

Nice small park and entrance to Forest Park. Covered picnic area with picnic tables and, public restrooms. Can get pretty muddy during the rainy season. Also can get fairly busy so parking can get scarce. Lovely though.

A really beautiful get-a-way from the city. The historic 1905 bridge here recently underwent a complete rehabilitation and restoration which won an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award.

Main entrance track closed, but the wood trail was open. Beautiful walk, nice a cool temperature and when the light shines through the canopy its blissful

The natural beauty simply cant be beat, even with the trendy crowd too often in abundance. The upcoming redevelopment project will be an added bonus.

Having a park this close to home is such a wonderful refreshment. This park is forested with easy trails, and is far from traffic.

After you enter this park and walk only a little bit along the creek, you will not believe that you are in the middle of a city.

It gets you into the park lol, not sure why it has its own section for reviews separate from the park itself

This beautiful park under a bridge is only the beginning of the amazing hiking trails beyond its meadow.
