If youre at Holocene on a good night (basically, if theres a crowd), youre guaranteed to have a pretty good time. Theyve got an awesome bar with bartenders who are always super friendly. Plus, youve gotta love the cheap drinks. Holocene hosts dance nights with some pretty awesome DJs on the regular, so youll definitely hear some awesome music any night. But like I said, sometimes the crowds can be lacking. I once got there around midnight hoping for a dance night that was promoted online and there was no one there except two guys on the dance floor. Mind you, they were having a great time! Other nights, there can be pretty awesome crowds. They hosted shows in a big room that was next to the bar, but they recently opened up the wall of that room to overlook the dance floor. It definitely opened up the place! Holocene is an awesome place to get your dance on without feeling like youre at some grimy club. I love this place!

Ive been to this place as a bar and as a wedding venuw. As a bar/club I think this place is awesome. They dont take themselves too seriously and the music is always good. They have a lot of different themed nights and different DJs come through so its always a different mix of people and music. The drinks are usually strong and they make specials that always seem to be sold out by the time I get in. As a wedding venue this place shocked me. During the place this place is super nice. Youd think that it was in bad shape after all the stuff that happens during the night but it cleans up super nice. There are little nuances in the decor that you dont notice during the night with all the lights off. Ive actually suggested to a cuple of my friends this place as a possible venue.

Every time I enter Holocene I know I’m going to have a great time. You know why? They have a plethora have fantastic DJs that keep the dance party going. I’ve been to the clubs downtown and it’s hard to get a little wild because I feel like I’m constantly being watched either by the snooty girls or the muscle tee’d bouncers. When I’m at Holocene I get in the zone and get a little freaky and adventurous with my kick butt dance moves. I’ve read a lot of things about hipsters and one of those items is that they don’t dance. Obviously those writers have never been to Holocene. Yeah that’s right. Hipsters dance, and they dance a LOT at Holocene. So keep on shaking those funky butts and keep getting jiggy wit it at Booty Bassment and SNAP! 90s Dance Party every month.

I saw a great local band here once. The Erotic City Tribute Band. Please bring them back. :) If you want to get to talking with someone I suggest sitting at one of the bar stools. I had a brief chat with someone while I was there. I dont know why that person asked me about wine though. I was drinking water. And the dance floor gets packed pretty early. They have a few booth seats for those that want to listen and dont want to stand or dance. Watch out for the people who are drinking too much though. They might have been drinking a long time before they arrived. I would avoid staying late, unless you can call a cab or taxi. Rose City is a good one. As well as the Tesla cab. They cost about the same. Although, the Tesla is really quiet. Nearly drives itself, too.

Some might call it a hipster wonderland but when you get right down to it, its a solid place to see some music, drink some drinks and shake it with the well, albeit quirky, dressed scenester folk. The have a unique set up with a DJ booth and dance floor in one room, lined with tables and couches in case a old breakdancing injury flares up, and a more intimate stage room above. I recommend looking for night that have both DJs and live bands playing as the time it pretty well so the music never stops. A full bar makes and an modern yet inviting industrial decor, complete with lights for the dance floor will make sure that you stay out past your bed time.

The atmosphere is fun and I find a lot of my friends here so thats nice. Some cool bands come through here too. BUT!!! As far as the drinks:The bar is too packed, no discernible line at all. I was standing at the bar and they actually helped people who arrived after me. So incredibly rude. And a double costs $10? Are you kidding me? This is Portland, and not downtown. I shouldnt have to pay more than $8 on a double well drink. Theres no reason to charge so much. If you do come and dont want to spend a fortune on getting tipsy, just be sure to get your drinks before you come here, bad service, high prices.

I try to only come here for shows, because I always have a good time. When the crowd is on the same page the venue is perfect. I always forget this when someone suggests I go outto 90s night or some other generic dance party and people are too drunk shoving everyone around, theres always a cover, though not expensive it also makes you wonder why their drinks are so expensive and pretty weak. They do have an alcoholic slushy machine though, and are across the street from the best strip club in town, so there are perks. Also, the bartenders are rude and take forever, be ready for a long line for drinks.

Great atmosphere here and a great venue for live music. I watched some amazing bands playing. The Wild War rocked it while opening for Shannon Entropys album (Out There Ideas) release performance. They teamed up with NW Noggin to do something rad during their show. With the use of an EEG (and willing participants) and projection software they projected live brain scans of fans while listening to their performance. What? Awesome! Their vibe is "Out There" and the whole experience was spectacular.

Holocene is where you go to dance. And for that it is good. Check their website or the Mercury, and make sure youre not so fashionably late that youre waiting forever in line to get in. Theres plenty of space to see or be seen, plenty of space to dance, and the crowd is far less douchy than the spots in Old Town. Drinks are crazy expensive for SE Portland/Buckman, and nothing special, so tie one on before or after. Parking is also weird in the area, but the #15 runs late into the night.

Nice venue with horrible sound most shows. The sound girl desperately needs to outed be. Everytime I see shows here they sound sub-par and whats worse is that the musicians are constantly having to request sound changes, I went to a show tonight and two of the three bands made multiple requests to boost vocals on various members. A month ago I was at a show where the same sound girl was yelled at by the musician because she was so incompetent. REPLACE HER!

Venue is great. Lights are great too. Music is pretty great also. The bartenders dont seem like they want to be there. I have been here several times now and always get this "stand offish" vibe from the Bartenders. Rude, not very friendly. I have been Bartending (currently am in SE) for several years in addition to being a bouncer so I understand the chaos in service industry. Drinks are a little over priced... a little smile or "hello" wouldnt kill them.
